Odds and Ends 12/05/13

A local bid board had Marx Miniature Over the Top Playset which was sold at auction for $700.00. This playset featured WWI figures which are copies of the Marx Warriors of the World figures.

I did my Wednesday flea market yesterday. I had not been there in few weeks due to the weather and other commitments. I was also curious to see how many dealers would be out in the cold weather. I was very surprised to see a nice group of dealers. Sadly I only found one good item a lot of Marx Johnny West accessories.

My program for catching spam for this site has caught over 78,000 pieces since I added the program to the web site. I am just amazed the amount junk people are trying to sell.

Once again I must recommend Uline for those of who are sending a volume of packages out. Their prices are very good. Two of the boxes I used cost me only $.25 each. If they were available in an office supply store they would be a $1.00 or more. What is really nice is Uline has a warehouse only about 10 miles away from me, where I can pick up and save on shipping. I will usually pick them up on Wednesday on the way back from my flea market I do. I ordered them on Wednesday morning and was able to pick them up in 30 minutes!

I have one more toy show for the year. It is being held at Mechants Square in Allentown on December 14. It is a nice show, I never know if I will find anything or not. I really don’t care as I will see some of my friends.

IN January, I have two toy shows line up for the month. The first show is on January 18 at the Timonium Fairgrounds in Lutherville Maryland. This is a great show with dealers we do not normally see up in the Northeast. This is a two day affair as the second day is a flea market with mix of new dealers and dealers from the day before. Then on 26th is the Winter Fever Toy Show at the Enterprise Center in Mount Laurel, NJ. They will have 200 tables of toys. We will do these shows weather permitting. The days I have to be at show no matter the weather conditions are long gone. I have dealt with snow and ice coming and returning from too many shows. One trip many years ago I drove in a white out blizzard for 30 miles. So if the weather goes bad, I will stay home.

One other thing in January it is the start of the new season of “Toy Hunter”. This year Jordan goes aboard to UK, which I can not wait see. I know Jordan did a Comic Con in Birmingham England. As always we will be blogging our review of the show.

man, after a rush of shows I don’t have any more until Indy, long cold winter. I guess I’ll have to get out the conversions and the bandages.

  2. Bill Lango says:

Paul: Looking forward to seeing you at the Merchants Square Mall Toy Show on Saturday, the 14th. Bill

Boy, it seems like the east coast mid Atlantic has lots of events. Like Ed Borris, I’m stuck all winter here in the Midwest with nothing to look forward to until Indy 2014, which is now nearly two weeks later into April, rather than the usual last weekend of March. Of course, we do have some general antique/flea markets in the area, as well as Rick Berry’s toy soldier store, heavy on painted metal, new & reissue plastic, and modeling supplies, but little in the way of vintage plastic, except the highly priced variety, mostly unaffordable for any except the very well-heeled. For some reason which nobody seems able to provide a clear answer on, the traditional Michigan Toy Soldier Show in January doesn’t exist anymore. This means we’ve got Indy in April, Joe Saine’s auction and show in August, followed by OTSN in September. And that’s about it, other than Rick Berry’s store parking lot flea market on a couple of weekends, both of which got rained out this year. To bide my time, I’ve registered with Paypal, and now have been doing a little bidding on ebay.

The shows will depend on the weather. I am surprise that we still have so many shows with the effects of the internet etc. The Winter Fever Show did not announced their date until last week. Most of the shows are two to two and half hours away. I believe we have a number of shows due to concentration of the population.

WOW!! Just noticed that a Marx Untouchables Playset, mint – opened for inspection only, that was listed for sale for $3200.00 on a well known dealer’s web site is now marked “SOLD”. Who would have imagined a price like that in the ’60s??

    • admin says:

      Andy
I am not surprise on the price. The playset is one of the harder ones to find. I think Peter Fritz had sold one for $2000.00 and that was twenty years ago.

    • Ed Borris says:

Heck, you should see what a well known dealer gets for Wagon Train sets. I think his reputation precedes him as if he and I have the same item, he usually gets more for his then I get for mine. Weird but true, maybe I need to get more well known.

I guess some people have the extra money to spend?? In 1951, the family’s 7 room brick cape cod house on 1/3 acre in Bridgeport, CT cost $11,000. That would just about cover The Untouchables, Wagon Train, and Custer’s Last Stand with shipping and insurance and maybe a little left over for McDonald’s Dollar Menu. You DEFINATELY need to get more well known, Ed!!

  6. Don Perkins says:

Toy Soldiers of San Diego’s website has posted a significant $60.00 price reduction on the six new sets of Expeditionary Force Greek infantry and cavalry. Instead of $228.00 for the combined six sets, the new price is $168.00 for the combined six sets. This equates to exactly $3.00 per figure. Nick & Deanna also announce that those who ordered at the old original price are all receiving a $60.00 refund check.
