Apparently only 4 new poses will be done on Germans; with two add to one set and other two in other. So only two more new poses coming and waiting on pictures so far!?. I won’t waste on few foam buildings and other accessories that could be bought else or replace by similars.I will assume the 4 new poses will come easy target on shows or internet/eBay soon as I already have most of the other sets/figures and bough them that way too. Lack or armor/vehicles in these playset of WW2 is sad failure.CTS plastic vehicles are the only cheap available so far but way under scale to put next to any TSSD/CONTE figure.21 Century and forces of valor ARMOR are only on sale separated and more expensive plus many already in wanted /price as no longer in production. Only the two BMC armor and AIRFIX recast are more commun, but once again without any Russian or much variety to choose from!!Hope something new come around soon!! Once again my personal review/critic.

And speaking of TSSD’s new poses, the latest issue of Playset Magazine arrived yesterday, and I noticed some familiar names from this Board interspersed throughout the pages. Especially interesting was the long section “Tales From The Early Days”, which included reminences (spelling?) from those who spread the gospel of Marx and other plastic toy soldiers in the early days. I really enjoy reading these types of stories and comments, since I came into the game a little after this first wave had already made it’s mark, bringing a sense or order, unity, and fellowship to our individual collection efforts. I noticed the list of “Founding Fathers of the Hobby” included Paul Standinger, and sadly, a few familiar names who are no longer with us.

I’ve mentioned before that I was able to attend my first OTSN quite by accident, since I had a Monday morning meeting in Chicago that I had to fly in for. I saw an ad for OTSN in the pages of PFPC for the Sunday show, and decided I would fly in Sunday morning, rather than my usual Sunday evening. I didn’t walk into the show until 12:00 Noon, but was still swept away by everything that was available. I quickly realized I hadn’t brought enough money.

Next year, being a little wiser, I registered at the Hyatt and flew in Friday evening. After that, having really learned the ropes of OTSN, I schedule my arrival very early Friday MORNING, getting there at 6:00 or 7:00 AM, so I can enjoy the Hyatt’s breafast buffet, and be ready to start hitting rooms right at 9:00 AM, when they first start to open.

Glad you enjoyed the article on the early days of the hobby I am honored to be considered one of founding fathers. It was interesting time, which will never happen again because of the internet People have asked me to do my lists. It is not worth the time and the hassle. I had to deal with printers who would take vacation, weather and other headaches It was fun in a way.
I had a similar experience on my first toy soldier show. I had heard about MFCA show, but always found out about too late. Finally I got the date ahead of time. I could not go down early because of I had to pick up my father from his kidney dialysis treatment. (he was on it the last five years of his life) After that I took my father and Mother to Widner College where the show was held. I got lost a couple of time and got there late. I quickly rushed around and found a person who I could ordered Starlux. The next year I went down with some friends It was a great time.

Paul, getting your lists 2-3 times a month was always exciting. I immediately turned to “Comment Time”, to see what the latest news and gossip was, and then settled down comfortably to study the list line by line, mark the items I wanted, and then gave you a call to place my order. The internet has photos, but I enjoyed your list because you had it organized by maker, and the line item descriptions were always accurate. For awhile, you were the only link I had to the hobby, so I was gratified to see Playset Magazine recognize you as one of the hobby’s Founding Fathers.

You’re right. It was an interesting time. And just like the golden age of Marx in the 50s and early 60s, we’re never going to see anything quite like it.

I think I only did the lists twice a month, which was enough. There was a lot of work putting the list together, having a computer helped as I could plug in items to replace old items. The preparing of the lists to be mail were no problem as I had a staff to help fold, stapled and stamped. The fun was getting a decent printer. I had one if I did not get the list in by a certain time and it was Friday it would wait until Monday. I finally found a printer that was available seven days a week and cheaper.
You are not the only one to say they enjoy me lists and comment time. I have people tell me that they still have my lists and I am amazed.
I like doing comment time on the internet because I can reach a wider audience. Also I can share photos of items and trips.

I enjoyed doing the lists, it was fun. I enjoyed showing the wide world of figures to my fellow collectors. I will not go back to the lists as the world has changed and it is now the internet if you want to sell.
glad you enjoy the blog, it is something I have been doing in various forms for the last 35 plus years.

As a side bit, Craig Remington actually had a set made for Combat, unfortunately he made Kirby right handed. You can actually see a picture of the set on Eick Eber’s page under cool stuff or something like that.

  10. Mark says:

I thought someone might have made some but wasn’t sure ,thanks for the info Ed !

  11. ed borris says:

In any case, I don’t think they were done all that well, so a better set would be welcomed. I mean they were nice, but the poses were rather bland and a right handed Kirby is just unacceptable to true Combat fans.

  12. Bobby G. Moore says:

Am I missing something? Is someone planning on doing a set of “COMBAT!” character figures? Will they be in plastic? That would be so cool?

  13. ed borris says:

I haven’t heard of anyone releasing or planning a Combat set, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. I think someone just said it would be cool and I pointed out that someone had done the character figures before.
