The first item Peter sent me was this celluloid figure of a British soldier. It was done in 1900. the figure was originally khaki, but a previous owner had prime it. The title of the figure is “A Gentleman in Kharki” (khaki).
The figure was done in relation to a poem done by Rudyard Kipling called the Absent-Minded Beggar. The poem was then set to music by Sir Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert and Sullivan’s fame. The song was used to raise funds to help the troops fighting in the Boer War.

A number of items were merchandise to “A Gentleman in Khaki” The soldier was usually done with a bayonet rifle waist. This could not be done for the celluloid figure so the rifle is at the waist. The English consider this figure the first plastic figure.
