Plastic Figure Roundup January 2017 Atlantic ETC.

Plastic Figure Roundup January 2017 Atlantic ETC. looks at some questions on Atlantic. We will look at comparsion of Atlantic and Gulliver which copied many of the poses.  Next we will have photos of the cowboys from Atlantic Box 2015.  From there we go to some interesting blister cards from Russia.

Erwin Sell going through his collection came up with some interesting information on Gulliver and Atlantic

Plastic Figure Roundup January 2017 Atlantic ETC.

Pepople do not  realize that Gulliver copied Atlantic using the pantagraph method. They assume that gulliver got copies of the molds or use.  If you simple look at the m they do not appear be different. Once you put them side by side you can see it
Plastic Figure Roundup January 2017 Atlantic ETC.
In the picture below you can see the difference.  If you measure bottom base to top of head the Atlantic standing Indian is 68mm.  The Gulliver Indian is 65mm. As refereence I have included the Marx Warriors of the World Indian standing firing the bow as comparsion.  He is 63mm.
Plastic Figure Roundup January 2017 Atlantic ETC.

I also notice that in the seating poses the difference is barely (one mm).
Plastic Figure Roundup January 2017 Atlantic ETC. In some cases the standing poses in action on Gulliver are a bit bend forward or inclined.

I had not check the US cavalry and cowboys from Gulliver versus Atlantic yet but will imaging same happen.
Atlantic are in dark chocolate brown ,Gulliver are the other colors.

Plastic Figure Roundup January 2017 Atlantic ETC.

As mention in a previous posting Atlantic had originally planned NO 2015 to be for a western building. Once that idea was cancelled the number was asigned be cowboys. Markus Lecksheid has the set and is sharing it with us.

Plastic Figure Roundup January 2017 Atlantic ETC.

The set has two mounted cowboys and two foot cowboys.

The set also has three different steers. One of the steers is part of scene of a cowboy branding it.

Markus also photographed the box to shows that 2016 Confederate cavalry.

I have seen these figures over the years loose but never on a card. This is the Russian police.

This is closeup of the card

Our next card is a copy of the Airfix  British Paratroopers. What is interesting these two cards showed up in the United States.

    Minor update.
Set 2015 was done and is the one e cowboys and cows above.I have it too as I mention
.It is set 2016 what was never done and suppose go w building. Is what book says and blogs too.
The odd (confederate army) name given to set 2016 is not mention in Any Atlantic refference I have.Is intersting but most be just a print out as the list above in case show a jump in numbers series .So not actual info!? .
    My thoughts.

  2. Erwin says:

Never see those Russian set in That pack.I have in bags before in 90s.
I seen the british and American paratroopers as that in ebay from US seller in NYC.

    • Roman Guest97 says:

Russian police set in blister includes 8 figures in 4 poses, 2 of each pose. Original set made by Russian firm Orion included 8 figures in 8 original poses. So the 4 poses here are missed

  3. Erwin says:

About Atlantic set 2015 is exact as mine in color the one show by Markus. In the HO set there two other figures and cows if I’m not mistake…to much to remember.
    I don’t think I have box.
At Hackensack 2008 show Stengels junior bough from me all empty Atlantic cases I had.I have tendency of not save boxes. So I took then there and sold all x a bargain.
Stengels got a full big box w then.
    Now I regret .
For storage space I condese figures by era mixing then all brands by country who made in clear mediun cases.
Horses go separared .split in three houses.
Some times take me weeks to find one item.
Yet blister card I usually keep then x some reason.

I really wish the atlantic figures were all reissued

    • admin says:

As Erwin point out the molds were destroyed. They were purchased by a company i Iraq. they sat on a ship during the first Iraq War. The company had the mold but as far we can tell they were not run. They were destroyed in the second war. I had people who talked to the company but they would not do anything about it due to the embargo. Greg Liska was over there during and after the war. I think told him about it and he did not find anything. He will confirm or deny that part.

  5. Erwin says:

Unfurtunattely Atlantic big scale and most other included HO molds but 29 of then were destroyed long ago.So it won’t happen ever.
Most Atlantic sets are still very comon around with few exception. Some times you can get then very cheap in others you need to paid collectible prices.

    • Mark T. says:

Even though the molds were destroyed, as Gulliver pantographed their western figures from Atlantic, that option is always open for someone with the resources.

CTS remaking old Marx figures gives me hope, however faint, that someone will do the same for Atlantic. I had almost all the HO sets, but only a few 60mm sets. They weren’t readily available where I grew up. I always thought they were a bit large for the rest of my collection, but some sets, especially the WW2 range, go very well with Conte, CTS, TSSD, Matchbox and Airfix figures.

      • Erwin says:

        Mark .
Gulliver company is still active and own the mold.
However they did not clone all molds from western series and only few of WW2.
In 2012 they file chapter 13.

But as off today they still retain ownership to it.
Their asset property is value public as 27 million as they own other machinery and molds too.
I have update info on it.
So if they ever sale all their Atlantic clone d mold.
We are talking least hundreds thousands dollars by lowest cou nt.I doubt any one in this HOBBY will invest so much to recover so few even in 10 years if ever sale that much.
But I’m sure if some want to copy in not much detail could do as the arabs and FFL.
        My thoughts…
        Best…

  6. Markus says:

    Great information on Gulliver/Atlantic connection.
Regarding Atlantic they did another long horn steer plus running calf in 1213 Stampede set. So far I think those HO poses had all been done in Scala 1:32 but just in different sets. As Confederate Army had been done in HO using a mixture of 7th Cavalry and Custer Figure it would have been easy to do the same in 1:32. Think HO was simply more popular in Europe than 1:32. Plus lower production cost.

    • erwin says:

      Markus you are correct.
Yes most western do have same figures in both scales. However series 1015,1115 and 1500 HO “cowboys” sets do carry 2 other poses animal poses never done for the cowboy set in 1.32 . One is another cow with long horns ,other is calf. But both animals were place in the stampede set in 1.32 .#2013

The Cowboy-rodeo set as post above was only done in 1.32 scale on series 1200s under number 2015 only as you correct posted and I have also one.

According to Atlantic two books I have ,catalogs and books not other series in 1:32 were done for this specific set with cows and riders.
Neither mention confederate set as 2016 ,only the one book catalog as set # 2016(to be Shoot out ..!? ) and the writer says some samples made had been done for promotion or else. That is what book says…
I got 7 catalog from Atlantic, none mention any about set #2016 either.
So who knows, because book was wrote using first account of two Atlantic employers it may be true.
In the WW2 and modern set is where more poses done in HO were not repeated in the 1.32.
Same in ancient.Sample Egyptian HO set have two poses archers and one with spear never done in the 1.32 scale 3 Egyptian sets. I had not others compere but may be some others Ancient set suffer same …
You may see sample of HO set here where show the two poses animals , I had seen the set on pictures often and show the two poses in actual figures.

  7. Bill Nevins says:

Erwin I have to disagree with you here.
The Atlantic box clearly says set 2016 was going to be CSA.
    Why would you doubt that?
Why would you take the word of books written on Atlantic, rather than what the company obviously intended to do, when they printed the 2015 set box art?

From looking at my catalog, the 2 blanks where 2015 and 2016 should go, are reserved for the regular size box sets, Cowboys and CSA. We know that 2015 Cowboys exists because we have seen it.
You’ll notice that the Mounted Cavalry set is crossed out in my catalog indicating that it’s out of production.
    So here’s a theory:
Atlantic was going to use the Mounted Cavalry molds to run gray plastic and call them Mounted CSA Cavalry Set # 2016. That’s why it was printed on the “Cowboys” box art.
In between the time that they printed the Cowboys box art and before production actually started, something happened to the Mounted Cavalry molds.

That’s why they are no longer available in my catalog and the box art has a red line through it. There are many, many other sets throughout the catalog that have been red lined. So perhaps Atlantic lost these molds? Or they were damaged or destroyed?
Who knows? It’s just my theory. But it fits the timeline.

On the next page, you have the two larger sets.
#2017 was Oregon Territory and #2018 was Gatling Guns.
Both of these require larger cartons that the smaller sets
Doesn’t it make sense that the numbers 2019 and 2020 would have been used for the town buildings, which would have been larger sets?

I could be wrong, but it just all fits for me.
Erwin, you may know more of the story than me.

    • Les White says:

When I used to attend the Plastic Warrior show and pick up stock of Atlantic from German and Italian dealers I asked the very questions you ask and was told that the Confederate Army set 2016 was not made but that the speculation was it would be the 7th cavalry set in Grey plastic just like the HO version that used a mixture of the 7th cavalry foot(with arrows removed) and mounted figures. As you mention the listing is on the box.
      http://www.atlantictoysoldiers.com/ATLANTICtoysoldier/west/serie1500/
this link shows the Confederate set in HO .
On the catalogues they are for retailers not the public and the crossed out sets were simply those out of stock at the time the catalogue was given to the shop owner. I think Erwin mentioned this.
The other point to mention is regarding the content of the boxes, not sure if this has been covered, but they were not consistent in each set. Some had missing poses and more of others. I mainly noticed this with Horses, Cattle and buffalo not so much with the figures, so things were a little erratic with the company. Many of the small yellow WW2 boxes have more content than listed on the box front.

      • Erwin says:

The non consistency in boxes happen in the big scale often as figures most time were factory insert to made fit out of sprue and loose.
Also in the 2000 series they cases are very easy to open. A Lot of sets cases sold at toy shows, hobby and online are third-party pass stock from original retailers. Many made had been open my accident, curius or else.Once in hand at collectors some were missing some poses too.
This is the case of hanging men in outlaw set that come with out in many cases.
Also the two indian camp set were often swap and incorrectly place in other case.
Unfurtunqtelly is an issue that can not be avoided.
        Best…

  8. erwin says:

Bill of course you can disagree and I’m glad….
Your is theory base in what you had see in a box only I suppose
I red two books, you may read it if you buy then too. It is up to you what you believe.
I pass what information I got and red. There is same info pass in two Italian blogs too….
So not my thoughts, not my theory .Not an assumption, not What I’m saying
I do not know more than you or then.
One of the book is not hard to find from Italy but cost…
Other unless collector sale it you may get it as discontinued very long ago…
I had read many time MARX former employers info pass in magazines and collectors take for granted and believe it 100% .Are they saying the true?
    Do you believe then?
Most does believe what they saying versus what many Marx catalog says or else known before.
    Again is up to you..
The cross out box in any commercial catalog is just out stock at moment or else. See you catalog year. Is not important at all as those are just commercial catalog send to buyers retail else. And many times were made with some mismatch error else versus production. Commercial catalog are use x reference but not quite the exact info for all production as Atlantic as well many others did change series number often to export and else during years production.
The book has actual factory production/warehouses original data photocopy in it .
During last years turn over and company change name else(I send company history translated to admin not long ago) Atlantic redesigned few packing for Europe only and others for abroad.
The sets 2019 and 2020 do not exist and never done or mention as far I know…
Only large vacuum series in western 1.32 were posted in last link and copy paste data I pass to admin as well.
The set 2016 mentioned -It was not a town ,but in simple single house with few figures only not call “town set”, same way a any WW2/modern vehicle come inside small box in 1.32 and fit well .In fact most WW2 vehicles/armor 1.32 box are smaller than western medium size yellow boxes. The pieces were plug in ,typical of Atlantic style .
HO houses are a 4 pieces simple small houses if look at then in large town set. So they will fit perfect in the small case .HO small series have a single house with 8 figures in small box too .They did a window small HO set one house 4 figures painted sold in last two years too .Apparently was sold by a second company who did paint job …
are very rare and wanted by collectors in Italy as far I red.
Last in western 1.32 series Atlantic never double entire sets figures to make other sets .
Only done was in HO with using the 7cav mounted as civil war and the Cowboys HO set adding stampede two poses cowboys and cows to it.
By the way the US cavalry are depicted in Foray 1872 cap not quite used in mounted soldiers by 1875/1872.A bit high derivate from early civil war cap French model based.
So a bit non accurate x 7v cavalry..
    My thoughts..
    Best..
    Thank you

  9. Bill Nevins says:

    Thanks Erwin.
    Very interesting observations.

  10. ed borris says:

They wrote two books about Atlantic figures in Italian? Wow, I didn’t realize they were that important of a figure line.

    • Erwin says:

Yes.In fact there is an Atlantic association club w blog where fan set fare and shows twice a year in Italy.
There one museum gallery dedicated too as well in Italy.
I will try post links as far I can .But in italian.
There is plenty you tube video dedicated to it as well made by collecora and one by book writter.
Atlantic did a series of SFC that is less know and have many fans too. They also made tons of historically kit WW2 plane and airplanes as well.
      Best…

  11. ed borris says:

I guess I should have bought more when I had the chance, I always thought they were kind of doofy looking. We had a bunch of the Gattling guns once and it was tough selling them.

    • Erwin says:

European paid more x the HO sets than others.Wester set are more common in Europe.
The SFC are the most high market.
Spase ship x the tall fugures sale x no less 500

  12. Erwin says:

That was sent before I finish.
    The phone is crazy today.LOL
    Ok .
I was saying That SFC big and 30 mm series are the top value by collectors. They were the last done as figures and less produced in amount.
The space man and alien in 60 mm is unique too.
I only see in books and blogs.
They did Captain H series after space batle series .
Base in japanese film. Those are top.
The big vacum soldier and western set sale high too.
    …..
