Mexico Marx 60mm Pirates
Mexico Marx 60mm Pirates are one of several different molds that were made of the eight 60mm pirates. Each set of molds has subtle difference from the original 60mm Pirates that Marx made in the 1950’s. Here we are looking at the Marx 60mm pirates that were in Mexico.
A good source in Mexico informed the following. The Mexico Marx 60mm Pirates had damage done by a fork lift that hit the container were the mold was. The accident split or broke off a section of the mold. This happen to the mold in 1987. It took two years to find someone who could repair the molds. It was decided the damaged figure would be removed and not repair or replace.
The damaged pirate pose is pirate with the sword and crutch. Since that damage the pirates have only seven poses. The figures were partial painted by the owner.
Mexico Marx 60mm Pirates Poses
These are the remaining pirate poses in the Mexico mold.
- Pirate with oar
- Pirate with the pistol
- Pirate sword and chest
- Pirate with hands on belt
- Pirate with sword
- Pirate with club
- Pirate with shovel
The pirates were offered by Gayla Kites in the United States in the early 1980’s. If I remember right the owner of Gayla Kites was a relative of the party who owned the mold. the figures were issued in a gray and purple. The figures are available today in Mexico in Piñata stores. The figures are in more gaudy colors.

If you had to give up a pose, that would be the best one. I have a fair bit of the 80’s run in blue, grey and lavender. I do have one original in yellow of the guy who would be Long John Silver (crutch man).
I have a full set of HK copies that were factory painted and more like 54mm, too.
Greg the HK are Marx painted WOW in around 56/57 mm mold that now is reissue unpainted on all 8 poses from Russia-same mold ,unless you got the later cloned of same poses in about 50 mm(like cake toppers)made in HK later in 80’/90′;I got some of those but very bad copies.
In my personal opinion,I like the pose as this set had some resembling the 1950 treasure island film in clothing and poses and as You said he represent LJS character but I guess with opposite leg missing as from the movie.
I also got the grey ,lavender and medium glossy blue bagged as (pirates of Caribbean set) from Mexico ,but that set had only the 7 poses and still around ,so would had been from 90’s not 80′ as mold was already damage by them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marx-Pirates-of-Caribbean-Buccaneers-60MM-12-Figures-in-7-Poses-/162047347758?hash=item25bac64c2e:g:TEIAAOSwB4NWyzaj
The above colors depict in yellow/red are from the set/mold before was damage the mold in colors run in Mexico, I had seen that color sets before vintage loose on internet listed before as from 70′ or 80’s too and from Mexico as well.
The ones I have are pretty bad copies and likely less than 54mm. I need to look at them. You’re right about the recasts. It could not have been the 80’s, I wasn’t doing anything with toy soldiers then. I gave all my stuff away in 1980 (believing I was an adult) and didn’t start to really collect until about 1994.
I wanted to have ONE of the LJS character, but you can’t have half your crew missing limbs, especially on a rolling ship deck.
Greg.I will give u one LJS ,I got few of then plus two original.True way too many.I got two x me.Rest x converssion from russia reissues but I barely have time to convert.
Best
Thank you, but I’m good. I have one original one and and a bad copy. That’s good enough for me.
Are you sure that the red pirates shown in the photo were made in Mexico?
Yes, they were made in Mexico. There exists two sets of this mold. another one is in Russia.
Yes, but it might not be Mexico — it could be Canada. Red figures were also produced in Canada. You can only tell by the ejector marks on the underside of the base — they are different.
The Plastimarx-Mexico pirates mold had some damage as explained befoire , and the one pose with the wooden leg was no longer produced since the early 1990s. This happened after the mold suffered damage while being stored using a forklift. The event was described by a fellow Mexican worker who apparently witnessed it. It was posted years ago on two blogs plus an FB group. The mold plate was redone and adjusted, omitting the one pose. These bright colors could be from Mexico if made before the mold damage only. Then, once only the 7-pose set was made as one pose was no longer available, they started making them in light pastel colors such as grey, lavender, purple, cream, pink, and later on, silver and grey colors. However, there was a clone mold made by a Spanish minor firm as well in the late 60s and early 70s; it’s in the books. Company Noveplax and Creaciones Plastiocas from Barcelona had an agreement from 1958 to 1967 with Marx and copied under license 7-60mm Marx set molds plus the Disneys Marx sets , along with the 70 mm space set. The figures were sold in their original form, first painted in soft plastic, then recast. These same colors were produced for the 1970 production, as can be found on todocoleccion some time, some in bags.
Yes, we are aware of both the mold damage and the Mexican releases. What I am referring to is that there are also red versions that are not Mexican. This can only be verified by comparing the bottom of the base.
On the Mexican red figures, there is one large circle and one small circle on the bottom. On the Canadian release, there are only small circles. The Mexican red is also a brighter shade. However, in photos this brightness is often not clearly visible.
Yuri,
You are talking about something that was posted ten years ago. The items may not be available to check. I have not heard of Canada doing pirates until now. do you have photos of them?
Yes, I not only have photographs of such figures, but also several of these figures in my own collection (the red and yellow releases). I also have photographs of a gray Canadian release belonging to a collector acquaintance of mine.
Information about a presumed Canadian release came from Canadian collectors. It is only hypothetical at this stage. The basis for this assumption is that these figures are found predominantly only on the Canadian market, as well as differences in color and in a characteristic feature of the polyethylene. It has a waxy appearance, with a certain degree of translucency.
I could show the photographs, but I do not know how to upload images here.
Yes, and what I am saying is that the same color shades were also released in Spain, as mentioned in books and seen sold on the todocollcion site sometimes. Unfortunately, there is no bottom base to compare with the photos made by the admin, and it is an almost 10-year-old post.
The other Marx mold that ended in the former Soviet Union in the late 70s,ended in Ukraine by the 1990s Donetsk Toy Factory that stopped in 2006, and was sold along with other Marx toys to another factory in Moscow (ARK Model) that made them till 2014/15 approximately. From there, apparently nothing happens, and some copies made using clone mold sometimes pop up on the internet from Russia or Ukraine.
What do forms from the USSR have to do with it? We are talking about a scale of 60 mm. In the USSR, they did not make such tall figures; they made 54 mm ones. The photograph shows precisely 60 mm.
Yuri .
I’m not replying directly to you at all in regard to Ex Soviet molds.
I was making a post-generic answer comment to the administration for the sake of the blog. Only the Marx Pirates USSR version set is slightly smaller than the rest Marx pirate molds in scale. Have a happy New Year.
