Odds Ends December New British
Our new contributor Andy Stevenson gave us a little background on his collecting and his recent purchase. Here is what he said. Iโ€™ve been a collector/player with toy soldiers since the 1970s but have only recently come back to the hobby with any great gusto.

I recently purchased a group of 1/32 scale 3D printed, WW2 era British Royal artillery gunners. These filled a huger gap in my order of battle, previously filled by converting existing Airfix troops. I imagine I am not alone in this need, so thought perhaps a post might be of some use to a fellow collector who may be toying with the notion of 3D figures. The figures are on the larger side of 54mm, bulkier, and have to be based –  I used Airfix bases.

Andy sent this photo to show a comparison of one of the 3D figures with other figures.

  1. John Wallace says:

Who is selling the 3D printed British artillerymen?: they look good and certainly compatible with Airfix

  2. Tom Black says:

The 3D figures look good but the one holding the shell looks like it has a lot of flash on the face and helmet. Cool set for the Time Machine but can you buy the figures separately?

  3. Andy Stevens says:

    John,

Here is the link to the EBay seller from where I had the figures made. His name is Neal and can tweak scale if needed.

The figures as our do look good next to Airfx, Matchbox etc. I rather like the idea of beefy gunners – hard graft a gun in action.

    Tom,

There is some flash which could have been cleaned off, but ever the kids at heart my son and I just wanted to get them into action ๐Ÿ˜

Hi John. The above link will get you to the seller, his name is Neal. The do blend nicely with airfix etc and the scale can be tweaked if wanted. I have no links with the chap just a happy customer. It’s just good to have dedicated gunners.

Tom, there is some flash which could have been cleaned off but my son and I were too keen to paint and play…. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • ERWIN SELL says:

I had commission many figures and armor from him before ,he rather work off better eBay and does good job printing and cleanings ,now he just got new printer and will use new material as well.
He does 1/35 and 1/32 on figures and armor under request .
Price very affordable within logic range of today 3D printing machinery-tool cost .
Unfortunately most resin- plastic type material are very stiff and on figures and weapons some times brake very easy during shipping or fall off small high also .

  5. Wayne W says:

As an old cannon cocker I can tell you working the big guns will either build you up, break you down – or both – if you stay at it long enough. He looks the part of a guy whose had his time on a towed weapon.

  6. T.D. Barnecut says:

Printed figures would not have traditional โ€œflashโ€ since they are not moulded.
3D prints usually have several thin struts printed at various locations on the figure which support the print as it is formed. The struts are easily removed but can appear anywhere on the print, including the face.In the figures shown, the blob on the artillery manโ€™s face really just looks like too much paint.

  7. Andy Stevens says:

Wayne that’s an interesting take on the gunners life. My grandfather was Royal navy during WW1 and served the large guns on various ship. He was powerful in build but man did he suffer with back, joints etc in older life. Not to mention deafness. So yeah these figures to me nicely represent an often neglected area of the hobby … up the gunners ๐Ÿ‘

    • Wayne W says:

Thanks Andy. We Field Artillery Crewman (13B in US Army) were often referred to as “human mules” in my day – a title many of us bore with a grudging pride. But I feel it today.

  8. Lynn Graves says:

What is the source of the Time Machine you show in green?

  9. Erwin says:

Is my idea, the photo angle or the arms in many these figures are super thick !?
I know EXF have tendency looks like in steroid super men but the arms in some these poses are like Popeyes!

  10. Gregory S Liska says:

We need some decent Japanese artillerymen! I had hoped CTS was going to do them. They’ve done US and German. I had no hope they would do British, but I thought Japanese gunners were on the way… just like that ‘Fury’ tank and Italian M-13. Sigh…
