York Toy Show 2018

York Toy Show 2018 will be the last major toy show for us this year. (We are passing on the Maryland show as I am doing one close by.) This is a large show with over 850 tables.

York Toy Show 2018 Getting There

We woke up to news that various rivers were cresting due previous night rain fall.  This did not stop us as all of the rivers we were going over had bridges that would not be affected.  Laurie and I left with no problems on the roads.  We did see a number of areas flooding due to saturated ground.  An half hour after the show started we  arrived.  I took Laurie over to Gerry Watts’ tables to sit as her walking is now good.

Once I knew Laurie was fine, my search began. York Toy Show has two big halls. I usually do the new hall first.  In the first row I  found a bag of Stuart horses and Thomas Toy Mexican figure.  These are items I can sell.

Several rows over I found a complete Thomas Toys Mexican with burro.  I continued down the rows and bumped into Mike Pedergast. Mike had said he might go to the show. We talked as we looked around.

My next purchase was  a tray of Ideal soldiers and Timmee sailors.  Later I found in the lot this Marx sailor in blue.  I bought another tray because it had a Processed 2 1/2 Ton Truck no canvas.  As I was leaving his stand, I spotted some other figures a Beton Ballerina and  Payton army vehicles. The dealer kindly threw them into the deal. I will keep the Ballerina and the Payton vehicles will be used in a lot of Marx and Payton 45mm pieces.

Catching up to Mike as he was buying some Playmobil, I spotted Starlux knights at the same table.  They were the second series figures so I picked up some of the foot figures. For myself I got the above mounted knight.

York Toy Show 2018 Old Hall

Moving into the old hall, I first checked in with Laurie and Gerry. Also I left my packages and head up the aisles. Also took timeout to say hello to Chris Lamont who tables near by.

Francis Turner was there with his wide selection of Marx figures and accessories.  I said hello and went to the next aisle. Coming down the next aisle Francis had tables on that side as well when I spotted something in a box on the floor. It was a Blue Box Construction Site.  I picked up and asked Francis for a price. He was surprised that he had it and gave me a price. The price was fair so I bought it.

Next stop was a dealer I knew had new stuff and reissues. He had a set of the CTS North Koreans that I need for a friend.  I also picked up the reissue of the Marx 60mm mounted cowboys. The figures were never issued here and I finally decided to buy them.

From the same dealer I got a bag of Transogram western. I was going to keep them. but ended up kept one selling the rest.

I ran into Mike Pedergast  again as he was with a dealer and I help him id some of the figures he was looking at. Before that I had stopped at Mike Russo’s table and got some Timpo.  Tired I went back to Gerry’s tables and made my final purchases picking up some Britains items.  We left the show and stopped at Bob Evans, which was a disapointment.

York Toy Show 2018  Final Thoughts

Overall the show was very good for me. I did very well in buying.  the show was crowded, but I did not see a lot of packages. Marx Playsets were there but mostly common sets.  It was worth the trip.

Thanks for the show Report !

  2. Don Perkins says:

I love these shows, and I love reading reports on them — reports on the ones I attend, as well as the ones, like York, that I don’t get to attend.

Over on Mike Prendergast’s Warhorse Miniatures site, Mike also gives an excellent and detailed report on this same show, with plenty of photos.

    Great finds .
    Never saw those Marx cowboys
Where they made then and where sold?
What the tale about then? .
The mounted mexican in burro is a nice figure .
    What scale is him?
    Best

    • The HTF 60mm mounted cowboys were made about 1952 the mold has 18 cavities and makes three of the “boss” (figure on the right in Stad’s picture and five each of the gunmen poses. They were made to ride the new 60mm horses that took separate saddles and bridles (note incorrectly called “reins” sometimes). These figures would fit in with the “chubby” cowboys and Marx was moving to the more detailed western town and ranch 60mm cowboys so the few of these cowboys made in rubber like vinyl were inserted into ranch playsets seemingly at random and very limited. Then the mold was put back in the mold storage are. I have picked up a few in European style plastic so I think the mold may have been briefly used at the Swansea factory in the UK. The mold resurfaced 10-15 years ago and Bill Murphey put it back into production making figures in redbrown and brown. I have them in stock

Is the York Show only held once per year? I would like to set up there, but that same weekend, we are always set up on FRI-SAT at the big Kalamazoo Toy Show where we always do well up in Michigan. …side note..Erwin, I think I have some of those recast 60 mm Mounted never issued Marx Cowboys in my dollar box. I just ran 4 of them on the Evil Bay last week mounted on vintage horses and Kent Sprecher bought them.

  5. It was a nice show. It was a little too crowded for my taste, but worth the hastle for finding some good deals. I found some sets and figures at great or fair prices. It was nice to see Paul again. We keep on bumping into each other and would start talking about different things. Then he helped me with some loose figures that we’re in a box. Every time I picked up a different figure he knew the brand. He was real quick with identifing them. Those Starlux figures looked nice too. Thanks again Paul, see you probably at the Allentown show.

One thing next to walking around a show with Laurie is to walk around with a collector. It was fun and I was happy to help you Mike find some nice figures. Starlux are nice figures.
