Shauan Christensen has a great web site Fantasy Toy Soldiers. His most recent  posting was for mummy soldiers from Dollar General. The figures are 45mm and have ten different poses. Most of the mummies have weapons and somewhat comical. Dollar General also is selling 45mm skelton warriors. The set of ten figures are only a dollar.

I decided that I would pick them up for the collection. I figured they would be easily to find as there are a number of Dollar General stores in my area.  Guess again I went through four stores with no luck.

On Friday after taking Laurie to work, I went a different way home to get gas and a flea market.  As I was driving I noticed a Dollar General  store and stopped.  After asking where their Halloween items  I headed to the section.  Getting to the section, I found the skelton warriors. Looking behind the first card I found the mummy soldiers. I was able to complete my quest.

Odds Ends Part One Mummy Soldiers, Flea Market

This has been a tough year at the flea markets around here.  One factor has been the weather either it has been too hot  or wet.  I had planned for example to stop at a flea market on Friday and Saturday, but could not due to the weather.. Even when you get to a flea market you find heavy competition.  One market I try to get is on Wednesday, but due to commitments I get there later in the morning.  I have been told that I have not missed much.  The last time I was there, I spend just a dollar for the two figures you see.  The figure on the right is T Cohn blacksmith in in like copper color.  On the right is Hawkeye from the Avengers. How has your hunting been?

  1. Like you said Paul, the weather has been bad for us this year with the flea markets. I have gone out about once a month looking for things the last couple of months. I found a nice box of mainly vintage Marx Cowboys & Indians at a garage sale in the spring for $10. If I didn’t ask about having any more toy soldiers after I saw a few armymen & old tanks, I would haven’t gotten that.

Really like these Mummy figures and i want to get hold of some to add to my Fantasy army. I know they are a little bit comical looking but are still nice and very cheap for $1, An incredible price these days. I already have plenty of the Skeletons. I doubt i will be able to get hold of them here in England. Ive seen them for sale from 1 seller on ebay for $12 plus postage at $10 is quite expensive for figures selling for a Dollar so i will wait a bit and see if they come up cheaper as i would like to get 2 or 3 sets. A bit to much of a mark up in my opinion. I’m all for adding a few extra Pounds onto figures but $22 for 1 set is taking the mick. It would be Great to see other figures like this come out and especially at this price.

Went to my local charity shop in the UK this morning and got a 2 inch hard plastic gamorrean guard from Star Wars Return of the Jedi. He is drab green in colour holding a axe made by Hasbro SA 2014. The base he is on is like the same as the Lonestar figures he only cost 25 pence have tried to find out if he is a figure you get in packets of cereal but no luck so far. If anyone has any ideas where he came from not sure if he belongs in a set of figures.

The Star Wars Gamorrean guard came in the Hasbro Star Wars Command Rancor Revenge set. Star Wars Command was a wonderful line of 54mm Star Wars figures that appeared briefly a few years back.
The Dollar General skeletons and mummies are made of a nice soft plastic and should have all sorts of uses. I’ve noticed that Dollar Generals can be a bit spotty in getting their stock up – a few locally are still getting the Halloween goods out – but they get there.
Since we had skeletons last year and mummies this year, maybe we can hope for vampires, werewolves, or zombies next year! Its great that they rereleased the skeletons while putting out the new mummies.

You were lucky to get a Gamorrean guard for 25p James. As Daniel points out there were 2 Gamorrean guard figures in a set with other star wars figures from Hasbro that would look good as Fantasy Orcs but ive only ever seen them in the Hasbro set which are going for around £30 or more. So although i like these figures im not prepared to pay out that money just to get 2 figures that i want, So good find. As far as the Dollar General Mummys are concerned i hope that as we get nearer Halloween they will be much easier to get hold of and for a reasonable price. Personally i would like to see more cheap sets like these bring out Orcs Goblins Demons or Lizardmen in this line, Yeah hopefully next year if these sell well we will get a set of something else?

Dollar General Orcs and Goblin armies would be a dream come true! I already have some Tehnolog Orcs and Dark Dream 1/72 Trolls doing 54mm Orc duty, but 10 Orcs or Goblins for a buck would be incredible!

I am not a regular flea-market attendee, but will stop by a location if I have time and the location is on the way. I thought I hit the bonanza this summer at a small market north of town. In a large, clear bag I could see what looked like Timpo swoppet western figures. I was right, and the bag was marked $10 for all. I did notice remnants and pieces in the bottom of the bag. I asked the seller about the figures and he mentioned he had bought them from an old man who had stored the figures in his attic. So, as I began to take a few figures out of the bag – you guessed it- they began to break and crumble. I figure they were in that overheated/cold attic for years, and the elements sped up the demise of the figures. I put the bag back waiting for the next bargain.

I did pick up two Forces of Valor Tiger tanks for $2 in a local garage sale, and picked up 3 21st Century Toys planes cheap at the local Goodwill shop.

Flea markets around here have changed in character over the years. In the past vendors would bring many items from their homes, garages & attics to sell. It was like a big, community garage sale, so old toys were not uncommon. These days the flea markets are mostly immigrant vendors selling food & vegetables, so finding vintage toys there would not even be an expectation.
