Reader Contributions Part Two Ed Borris, Peter Bergner, Markus Lecksheid

Reader Contributions Part Two Ed Borris, Peter Bergner, Markus Lecksheid we have some interesting contributions.  First Ed borris does a comparsion between Plastic Platoon and TSSD.  Then Peter Bergner and Makus Lecksheid share some of their finds from Brussels.  Peter will have many of these finds in his boxes at the Plastic Warrior Show.

ED Borris has done a comparsion of the Plastic Platoon and TSSD Vietnam Figures. Here is what he has to say.

I don’t know if anyone is interested.  I did some side by side comparisons between TSD and Plastic Platoon. The size of the body and head of the figures looks pretty good to me. The weapons are another matter , but it should not be too much of an issue.

The TSSDD weapons seem larger than the Plastic Platoon. This is really evident in the size of the pistols. TSSD has a really funky bayonet hook up. Otherwise they seem to be pretty comparable size wise, not enough to put me off anyway. Others may find the size differences unacceptable, but that’s up to them.

He shared some of the items he got.  He got a nice group of Athena and Pal Evazona. Also he got Comansi and Cherilea Spacemen. Sadlyy all the Romans are damaged, but there are people who will buy them to convert.Reader Contributions Part Two Ed Borris, Peter Bergner, Markus Lecksheid

Theses are downsize copies of the Elastolin Romans. They are 50mm not 40mm that Elastolin did. Reader Contributions Part Two Ed Borris, Peter Bergner, Markus Lecksheid

Markus  has shown us some of his finds.  Many of the prices were reasonable. This castle was only 20 Euros ( about $26.00).

Very interesting fun finds x Peter and Markus.
The Starlux 40 mm Germans set box is from Italy ,i had seen some in italian sites and ebay as well .It appear was a “distributor” for Starlux and repack it with all wording in italian and the not common logo .Interesting fact is the put the post WW2 baner colors but the box/packing has the Nazi era colors banners with the traditional german eagle instead of swastika inside circle. They did it with other German sets in Nardi and Atlantic packs as well.

Romans are HK copies painted ,they had ben sold in those bags by many distributor thee many variation of poses ,not only cloned too .But in those pack are not often seen around least ,not here x sure.
I like the castle ,looks made for Starlux or other french maker ,unfortunately not plastic x my like ,but not doubt are well done .
    My thoughts.

Who did those two white/cream figures in the first two rowns from the top? They look like Barbarians/Gauls or Vikings, or whatever they are,

Also, who did the painted pioneer(?) on the extreme left second row from bottom?

Interesting a Lido type Japanese figure in gray, a couple of them actually.

On the pioneer it is from a French company. If Markus knows we will post it. Yes the odd colors on the Lido Japanese is interesting very likely Hong Kong copies.

The viking are part of early CANE set hat has three Elastolin pose copies ( included those two) and 3 of first set CANE did .Once full set(6 poses) was complete by artist who work x CANE Simonetti ,the Elastolin poses were discontinued and not used .However the set with three Elastolin copies mold was sold under other Italian brands after. They are about 65/70 mm and often at ebay loose or in packs from Italy .

The side by side comparison of the TSSD Vietnam U.S. Marines with the Plastic Platoon version is interesting.

I, for one, believe that the much less expensive TSSD set is at least comparable in quality of sculpting/posing with the beautiful but much more expensive Plastic Platoon — not superior, and not quite as well done in some details with Plastic Platoon — but at least comparable.

The NVA sets of each company is another story, since the TSSD NVA were “computer-designed”, and aren’t nearly as fluid or artistic in their posing as are the Plastic Platoon NVA figures, or, for that matter, TSSD’s own Marine counterparts. But the TSSD versions are still high-quality figures, well-scaled in a high-quality soft plastic, and quite affordable — at least as new production goes these days.

Additionally, it should be remembered that TSSD didn’t just do a set of 8 figures, but also offered a whole series of complementary pieces — two different Saigon buildings, a complete set of coordinated walls and gates reminescent of the “walls of Hue”, and a beautiful crashed helicopter diorama, with everything put together in a nice, boxed playset — thus giving us, finally, a complete Vietnam War playset. This allows all Vietnam War collectors to “add on” new production of other manufacturers, such as MARS, Action Castings, and Plastic Platoon.

Basically, it all points up to the loss the hobby is experiencing from Nick and Deanna VerSteeg’s retirement. This whole thing reminds me of how much they contributed over the years, with their final offering of the Vietnam War playset filling such a gap.

The napoleonic in base white color with partial off painting foot and mounted Spread around lot appears to be JSF from France but one looks like RF-Jem.
Flat Soviets are 70s or later part of sailor set made by Progressive or other Russian maker
    Alpine is CANE
Two woman cowboys may be KO-HO but other brands also copied and sold it too, indian Green and red all the way down with shield raised are KO-HO or copies too, there other Indain appear to be KO-HO too.
Tere multiple tall 70 mm Jecsan,Comansi cowboys around and some LIDO copies or original arabs ,else of course .
There Jecsan musketeers and others around too
The blue german between the two Japanese copies from LIDO is Gulliver variation pose from Atlantic set ,blue and red mexican are part of Alamo set from french premium brand Roche Aux …
I do not recon bottom knight archer and yellow one but could be french copies.
off x now as far i can see

  5. Markus says:

The pioneer is French made by Cyrnos from a series of six (still missing two).
Castle is by La Hotte aux Jouets from the 60s.
And of course Erwin is right. Most of Napoleonics, Knigjts and Cowboy/Indians with paint loss are by JSF. Bought them from Alain Thomas in picture with his real great book covering this maker. With about 30 dealers with tables of different size it was a real good show. Many items really reasonable priced.

    • ed borris says:

Does the pioneer have a flintlock or a revolver? I’d like to see all six or the four you have,

      • ERWIN F SELL says:

The Cyranos figures have very crude(poor detail weapons) ,it appear to be more an old pistol(finstock ) than a revolver. But in the long guns same happen .I will give then old style in my imagination but close view it looks like a modern pistol automatic too.
If you would got this figure you will probably change it(weapon) right away as not quite neat and you good in conversion
        My observation
        best

  6. ed borris says:

Yeah they are a little crude, I like pioneers though so it’s good seeing them, I wouldn’t cut him though, he looks to be too old to mess with and if they are that hard to find it would be a shame to cut him up. Have to observe a little respect for the old guys, since I am one of those.
