Over the years Laurie and I have gain many great friends from the hobby.  One of those friends is Andreas Dittmann. We have had many great times with Andreas and his wife Lixi.  Over the years we share many pieces and questions on the hobby.

Andreas send me several questions on items he acquired recently.   The first one was these castle parts he acquired at Herne.  He wanted to know if they were part of a Marx HO Castle. Do you know?

The next item is another Marx HO item, the Noah’s Ark. Andreas want to know if there is a list of the contents. I will let Andreas explain. I recently got a Noah´s Ark from Marx in HO/OO. Do you know where I can find out, what the contents should be. I count 106 animals. They all came as the bible says in pairs.
But the seven dogs are all different kinds of dogs like shephard, collie, poodle etc.
Is this correct or should there be pairs of the same specie of dogs?
It is the same with the apes: Many apes, but as far as I see ( they also are of different species.)Andreas Dittmann's Questions Brian McIver Piece Timpo Doctor TrippFinally Andreas had  three items he also had questions. First is this pirate which feels is a conversion. Do you agree and recognize the original figure.

Brian did this piece to  honor his friend Gary Dutko.  It is a Confederate resting with Gary’s face. A nice tribute to a good person.

I was cleaning in the basement when I discovered a Timpo Medicine Wagon. I place on the side because it was damaged. The roof was missing and the axle broken off in the back. Underneath the wagon was Doctor Tripp.  I have seen various variatons of  the name. For now I am going just show the figure until I have the wagon repaired.

  1. Peter Evans says:

The Pirate is a conversion by the late great Peter Oliver, a great guy and long time friend of PW who is sadly missed

  2. Don Perkins says:

Although I don’t KNOW the answer to the question Andreas poses on the different dog breeds he found in a Marx HO/OO scale Noah’s Ark set, I THINK I know the answer, which is this: Marx (or any other maker of a Noah’s Ark set would not likely have included different dog breeds among their pairs of animals going into the Ark — and certainly not pairs of poodles. I suspect what happened is that some child or collector who liked collecting miniature animals simply combined their miniature dogs into the Noah’s Ark set, so all their miniature animals — wildlife, various dog breeds including poodles — were all in one box, bag, container, and/or location. And that is why, I suspect, Andreas now finds poodles mixed in with the regular complement of Noah’s Ark animals.

I love the Thaddeus Tripp figure. For a while I had mine armed with two pistols as the Robert Vaughn “gambler” character in my Timpo Magnificent Seven.

I always wondered if his name “Tripp” was inspired by the far-out hippies and their “medicines” that were in the news when this figure was produced in the early 1970s.

The figure of Gary Dutko is marvelous. He is indeed a great guy and I have gotten several of his wonderful Conte and Paragon conversions.

  4. Wayne W says:

Kudos on the Gary character! Some of his conversions are among my most prized figures. I always enjoyed talking to him in Texas (my one show).

    • Brian McIver says:

Hi Wayne, the Texas show has been my only American show. I had a great time there & Gary & his family looked after me. It was great to see the Also too. I also got to do some painting with another good friend Compton Creep who always has a painting booth set up. This was in 2011.

    • Brian McIver says:

      That should read Alamo lol

  5. ed borris says:

I’m guessing you took the head from one of the Plastic Underground figures for that conversion.

Compton Creel, haven’t seen him there lately. We did have John Ratzenberger from Cheers last year. Mark Lemon was there. No Wayne though.

    • Brian McIver says:

The head is from the plastic underground figure. I commissioned from Jason a few years ago in Armistead type pose.

    • Don Perkins says:

Ed, instead of playing around on this chatboard, shouldn’t you be packing up for Indiana at this point? Or are you planning on leaving all that to poor Mike Kutnick? And what about about Rich Eagan — doesn’t he usually hitch a ride with you & Mike? All his playsets have to get loaded. You’ve only got a day and a half to get all packed up and start your short journey to Lafayette, where the fun begins. I’ll be joining you there Saturday morning — I suspect I’ll be wandering the halls at least an hour before your room opens at 9:00 am — a few eager beavers like Toy Meister and his wife often open at 8:00.

I think I’m going to adopt a page from Andy, and concentrate this time on vintage Marx plastic. I’m starting to appreciate that flat finish, soft plastic even more these days, especially from the cream-colored character figures. It’s what truly recreates my childhood memories. Of course, ExForce is so outstanding that if I bump (hopefully) into some re-sell sets at a lower price, I’ll be tempted there to. Or Atlantic 60mm Ancients & Westerns — I didn’t appreciate them sufficiently when they were all over the place, and now I’m having to pay somewhat premium prices whenever I want a few more.

Fortunately, Bill Nevins (where is Bill these days?!) sold me a nice mini-hoard of Atlantic Greeks, Trojans, & Egyptians awhile back at an eminently
      reasonable and very generous price.

Now if I could just make London’s Plastic Warrior Show next month, with all that European plastic, I’d be all set.

      • admin says:

That is good idea Don search for the items you like. We can not wait to hear the treasures you find. Atlantic is getting harder to find but you never know. You would be overwhelm if got to PW. I enjoy watching people having their magical moment. We are sad we are going to missit not just for that but the friends we hav not seen in a long time.

      • Andy says:

Donald, et al., Barzso’s site is back up, but still no new figures for sale yet. I guess he just overlooked his renewal deadline, but really, who else would want the name?

        • Don Perkins says:

Yes, the site is back up, and looks just like it did before it was taken down, without any changes.

I do intend to ask Ron about it when I see him Sunday morning.

For myself, as far as Barzso goes, I’m interested primarily in acquiring one each of his two medieval cottages, which go well with his Robin Hood playset, and fortified abbey, which I already have. I think Ron still has extra, unsold pieces of the medieval cottages (one large & one small), which I’m expecting him to bring from Chicago to the Indiana show.

I’m also hoping to get from Ron a few more of his British Grenadiers and Colonial Militia from his Battle of Lexington Playset, because I think they will match up with the new LOD/Barzso Siege of Yorktown Playset, probably to be unveiled at the Chicago show in September.

    • Wayne W says:

Ed, we were hoping to go last year but we had all sorts of graduations conflicting – our son graduated his advanced nursing program; had two grandkids graduate high school and several graduated Kindergarten – all bumped up against the time we had to leave to make it to the show. What are you going to do? Before I retired I always had to jiggle between the graduation schedule where I taught.

This year we’re a “go.” Already have the room booked and travel plans made. Hope to run into some friends there – this will be their introduction to our hobby. I will make a point to look you up.
