I just spotted last night that the Chicago Toy Soldier Show has been canceled. The reason is due to the hotel’s demands.

I’m sure the Hyatt was the reason but it was just a matter of time for this show. Up until covid I attended 26 consecutive shows and I have to say the last 4 or so I attended where nothing like the old days. You had to be a part of those late 90’s, 2000 shows to really understand.
It is sad news however as I have many great memories and made many friends.

I will miss the breakfasts where 10 or 12 of us would head out to Elly’s each morning, but I sure won’t miss that Hell Hole of a Hotel. Almost every single year that I’ve set up there since 2001 there has been some sort of problem with the room. Most of the time it is getting the Japanese and Turkish Air Forces to evacuate the rooms! As long as the Hyatt has those huge contracts with commercial airline crews, I’m sure they could care less about one week of old men and their little toy figures. On the GOOD side, Larry Lovely is STARTING a Toy Soldier – Old Vintage Toy Show in Bucyrus, Ohio on SUN September 10 this year. Several plastic soldier dealers are already signed up.

Thank you my friend for the mention of my show. I have had so much enjoyment and fun at the shows that I decided to put one on and hope to have a great show for all my old and new friends. The flea market is going on there that weekend also so I hope that will help boost attendance and we will have fun no matter what. I only hope that OTSN can come back soon as it was the best Toy Soldier Show of them all. Don’t forget about the Lafayette show on March 26 with room trading March 24 and 25! It rates right there with OTSN. I am looking forward to spending time with all my great friends! Take care and God Bless!

I want to thank Roger and his wife for extending the show after Don stepped down. As Gary notes, the show has been an event that many of us look forward to every year. It is, literally, one of the highlights of our lives – not only do we get to look at toy soldier stuff, but we also get to see many of our toy soldier buddies over the course of an extended five day event. I guess it was inevitable that the show would come to an end, but it is such a shame. Roger, thanks to you and your wife for resuscitating this old dame and keeping her going for us over the years. The gift that you gave us is certainly priceless.

    Warm wishes,

    Dick Wood

Good news. Matt at Hobby Bunker has stepped up to transfer/create a “new” Chicago Toy Soldier Show, now called the “Chicagoland Toy Soldier Show” the same weekend as originally planned for the OTSN/CTSS show before the Hyatt turned into such as**s. It will be happening just down the street at the Chicago/Schaumburg Marriott just the other side of the shopping mall from the Hyatt. Same venue as used by the Military Miniature Society of Illinois (MMSI) for their annual show. More info coming soon from Matt at Hobby Bunker. His note in his weekly update of 9 March 2023 is that room trading will be happening from the Wednesday prior to the formal Sunday Show on Sep 24th, with more info to follow soon on other details. Julie Abrams has a link up to the show room block at the hotel in the Treefrog Treasures weekly Rivet update this week. (9 March 2023 edition). While it won’t be run by the team who brought us 41 great years of OTSN/CTSS, it is being run by someone intimately familiar with the “old” show and is trying to make the “new” show as much like it as possible in a new venue. Look forward to seeing everyone there to support this great event for our hobby and to “thumb our noses at the Hyatt management for being such jerks to us the past 5 or 6 years.
