June One Collection Time MPC Russian

June One Collection Time, we go back into the collection to look at some interesting items. We will look at an odd color for MPC Russians. I got another of the large Blue Box army figure to share.

June One Collection Time MPC Russian

June One Collection Time MPC Russian
Going through the collection, I found this lime green MPC Russian. Normally the MPC Russians show up in steel blue. I checked Kent’s Sprecher’s site, I found that MPC did the Russians in green, blue, and red. Because they were done later the quantities are smaller and less of them show up.
blue Box army
I got another of the Blue Box large army figures recently. It interesting how I finally get one of the series and another pops up.
knight bowman
I like this medieval archer from China. The maker did not just do the figure, the maker added a slanted sharpen log. These were put up before the archers to protect the archers from mounted knights..
Belgian soldier
Here is another soldier which is another from a group have shown before. I believe it is from Belgium
Crescent cavalry
I had gotten as a child some of the Crescent cavalry figures. Years later, I took my mother for a ride and we ended up at the Downingtown Farmers Market. there I found the Crescent Union and confederate figures. The one I liked the best was the officer firing a pistol with his left hand. His right arm is in a sling. Blue Boxmase a variation of this with the pistol in his right and left arm in a sling. I have placed the two Crescent figures around the Blue Box figure.

Conversion

army conversions
Over the years I have shown many nice conversions from various people including our very good friend Peter Evans. Then you find a figure that you have to say “A” for effort. A case in point is this running army figure. The pose to me seems awkward. What do you think?

I think the bowman is actually 52 mm scale ACCURATE brand from UK not made in China of pose English archer ,only not original is poor paint added too it .Set has 10 poses ,included two archer poses and one crossbowman .Sold in 1990s as first set released i believe by the defunct company .Later Revell recast the same set in less amount figures per case configuration also .
The marine pose looks odd as kneed in the leg looks like has some deformity and other arms is way too long versus body proportion but pose itself looks fine to me and i like it.Too bad figure has not well done the extremities conversion ..
The paratrooper in 70/75 mm scale is by PRB (an Italian firm based in Bologna ) .Set has 13 poses and made with 5/6 different headgear to represent different corps /nation armies .Some of poses are direct copy of Domplastik with very minor variation in uniform and weapons
I post then here around 2015 i guess.

I import the MPC full set of Russian and Japanese in late 90s early 2000 in silver and gold metallic colors in semi stiff plastic from Peru where mold ended. They sold to me the bags with 200 figures each and i split in lot of much less smaller bags sets ,sold off many and even split some inventory with two dealers at shows.
I had seen the BB tall figures or attributed to BB,that are a version of original 50 mm set ,but none with BB trademark bellow. This pose has it bellow!?

The archer looks like A Call To Arms.

    Hi
“Here is another soldier which is another from a group have shown before. I believe it is from Belgium”

Not Form Belgium – Italy PRB

  4. Tom Black says:

I think the only Medieval set done by A Call To Arms was the Norman set. Like Erwin said it was done by Accurate in 1/35 scale. Why the decision makers at Accurate chose 1/35 scale for plastic Toy Soldiers is just another scale blunder we see every now and then from TS makers. Too bad because they were well researched detailed figures of the 100 YRS War.

    • ERWIN SELL says:

I always wonder why ACCURATE sold then as 1/32 yet made then in 1/35.
Revell recast same set list the correctly as 1/35 .
Accurate rest sets still are in the low 1/32 range but not as small as these and french medieval set both made 50/52 mm scale ,actually smaller than Airfix men at arms nice set .
I can blend still Airfix Accurate and ACT medieval sets as close enough each other but no way with EXF,Publius,no name and many other makers today that go the other taller range scale production 1/30 .
Medieval warfare require close hand to hand combat scenes and scales are essential match .So unfortunately two groups scale range x either two separated collection or choose one ..

I’d seen the MPC Russians in that yellow-green, red and a red-brown that I was told was a Canadian version. I can’t back that up.
I’d recently asked Jeff Imel if he’d do the Marx Russians in metallic blue to match MPC Commies. He thought the idea had merit, but it would not be very soon. He has done them in, besides other colors, a great olive green.

    • Tom Black says:

Better yet, see if Jeff Imel can buy the mold from the Peruvians.

      • Greg Liska says:

I’d love to see them done in a nice realistic olive but I doubt we’ll see those molds or any figures making it back to the US. Right now I wish I could make it back to the US. I’ll live with my Commies in metallic blue, just let me get back to them!

  6. Greg Liska says:

I think the Marx Marine conversion is plausible and even likely. I like it.

  7. ERWIN SELL says:

I personal do not like the metallic colors unless x medieval.but because most metallic colors have a tendency of give better impression and view of figure details. I often keep one pose each
For any WW2 or mider I rather keep standard mate colors.

    • Greg Liska says:

I don’t like metallic blue as a color for the Russians, but nobody is recasting the MPC Commies to go with them, so you need to make the Marx match them.
Neither set stands alone between Marx and MPC. I also don’t like the mis-matched head gear on the MPC guys. Trying to do too much. The guy wearing the Budinovka is a crap pose, carrying an AK. The Cossack head gear is unusual, would have been nice if they were in the standard Papacha. The Cossack with the sword is another dumb pose. I do like the prone, firing Dp-28 pose.
I’ve added a fair amount of the WST scale-downs of the Mx 6″ Russians. 2 nice sniper poses, the rest a similar to the 54mm poses, anyhow. I’ve never heard of them being Italian copies. I’d seen them in a very bad green before WST sold them in grey and I had assumed they were HK or China, especially since they were somewhat smaller than 54mm scale.

      • ERWIN SELL says:

In my opinion and preference MPC versus Marx review .

        MPC
MPC I like the pose with budenovka a lot.The pose is suitable for climbing or passing any obstacle.
However I never got why they made and AK x it ,i bet artist was trying make a PPS43 and got it wrong ,I cut front tip and reduce end of it and looks more as it .You can remove magazine easy too .
Marx made several US ww2 poses with post weapons too a mistake unacceptable i think as been made by US maker.
MPC prone can be convert to fire other weapons,i made an anti tank rifle pose of it .Can be used as crew of MG if cut weapon too .
MPC Cossack with sword i change the sword x grenade and and easy made or left as it is as I like it much.

MPC Advancing waving arm high not much to do but ok for few .I made one as a carrier of a banner .You can swap grenade thrower arm with it and made another grenade thrower pose.
MPC Two advancing are great plus weapon can be changed if like /can .One is firing as advance or charging ,great x many in same poses .The pose with AVS-36 is interesting and well done and good x repeated pose.
MPC Officer is standard generic .
MPC Pose trowing grenade is more realistic than MARX .Can be easy converted to death in ground too .
MPC Soldiers/figures are show with two of more typicality boots(Kirza SK variants )used versus Marx with less common used Box Calf Boots.
In my personal like MPC has more potential x easy conversion -diversity ,more poses better uniform diversity than MARX much more .More advancing /hand to hand action poses

        MARX
Marx falling is nice heroic pose but no use in more than 2,neither any way convert it to else than casualties .
Pose is extracted from a war photo as well officer pose .
Marx Clubbing same and hard convert to other
Marx Running with PPSH41(poor made) is running away or else but very odd for attacking and again hard convert to shoot it from one hand even if twisting hand weapon forward .
Is good as pose unloading from truck, tank else maybe!!
Marx standing firing ,the best of all 6 and have easy conversion potential .
Marx officer w pistol looks good and very well done .
Marx with grenade is in odd pose to do such action in my view .
Marx artistic work is far better in general and anatomy depiction but often non realistic x action poses in the field .
Mars is too small set poses with poor choices in my opinion .
        My though

    Talking about MPC.
And in my personal preference only I like much more the MPC Russians over marx 54mm
    More poses.
    Better variety of Russian weapons.
    More action poses.
Uniform detail with insignia more detailed.
And intesting variation or diversity in uniforms and headgear.
TM also but no match scale.
The Italian copies of Marx 6″ Russians in 54 mm sold by CTS till recently are better than original marx 6 poses made in 54mm.
    My thoughts.

    • Greg Liska says:

I knew there was another color I’d seen the MPC Commies in. I just remembered; a bright blue. About the same color they usually sell recast Mx Mexicans in or a lot of ACW when they are not in ‘baby blue’.

  9. The Accurate medieval figures were made to blend in with the Airfix Men at Arms that are a bit smaller than 1/32.

    • ERWIN SELL says:

Interesting good point. I agree in intention and well thought ,yet they went a bit smaller if look well versus Airfix ,but they could blend very easy of course ,is very tinny differences. Airfix and EASCI itself run many sets in 1/35 and 1/32 alike under the “1/32” advertise and still blend well if not too specif and nailed .I also find the MPC 45/50 mm almost in good blend with ACCURATE and Airfix medieval too .
      My thoughts.

  10. Alex Baldwin says:

As far as MPC Russians go, as noted, the metallic blue is by far the most common color. I have some that are in a light/horizon blue and some in Cream that I assume were later reissues as I’ve come across a lot fewer of them. I’d love to get ahold of some of the red or the bright green if I came across them. It’s a shame the molds are no longer available to run because the MPC Russians or Japanese would be wonderful if they were reissue in realistic colors (the Japanese original colors aren’t too bad). For the Russians, a good green or brown would be nice.

    • Greg Liska says:

I love the MPC Japanese. Good poses and they compliment the Marx guys nicely, giving them good shooting poses and an officer, not a guy with a machete. The original color was excellent, kind of the color of old concrete, very matte and sometimes a touch yellowish. I have some Marx Japanese that are close to my MPC guys. I have some HK (or Italian?) copy Lido Japs in there, too. They are scaled down to about 54mm, so it’s a nice set up. The yellow Japs are OK, but I don’t think they are anyone’s preference to the ‘concrete tan’ ones.

  11. ERWIN SELL says:

Lido Japanese and Germans were copied by HK in rather smaller than LIDO and often poor detail, still nice set .I see and have Japanese in green tan and brown,Germans in grey ,grey blue and green .

  12. Mark McNamara says:

Great looking figures ! I was also thinking the awkaward Army Guy could be a conversion. Off top of my Head , the top half could be one of those kneeling GI’s and bottom Atlantic ? I like the pose also !
