Marx Plastic Figures Two Skyscraper Figures

Marx Plastic Figures Two Man
The Marx Skyscraper Playset has the largest tin litho building Marx ever did. It has been rumored to have been planned to be the Daily Planet from Superman. It one playset building I have been looking for, with little luck. I have owned two mint in the box playsets, but I sold them for two reasons. One, I knew the demand for mint sets. The other reason. I would have needed someone to put the tin together as I have not mechanical inclined. LOL

The set has sixteen figures of various workers and civilians

This figure is interesting in two ways. First, it is in blue. The normal color is cream. The blue is a test color that was used to test the molds. The other thing is what the figure represents. He is an elevator operator, an occupation long gone. I remembered when our local department store Hess’s got the automated elevators. The last time I can remember on an elevator with an operator was in Mexico City in the 1980s.
Marx Plastic Figures Two Ping Pong
Two other figures are these ping pong players. According to Kent Sprecher on his site, these figures were some times removed from the mold.

Marx Sawbuck

Sawbuck
The sawbuck was in the early ranch playsets. There is an ongoing debate if it was made by Marx or an outside source. I remember being at a show in Ohio years ago with Rick Koch. We both came up with a few which we knew a collector had been looking for a year. They turn up from time to time.

President Lyndon Johnson

President Johnson
For some reason, Marx did two versions of Lyndon Johnson. One was with hand out and the other the hand at side. Also the hand out is larger than the hand in. The possibility. the one left was a rush after Kennedy’s assassination.

Are the Marx skyscraper figure molds in Mexico? It seems like I saw some kind of re-issues at one time – like the pharmacist figure in various colors?

I like the second LBJ figure. It is a much better characterization, broad shouldered and tall like he was. The first figure looks wimpy by comparison.

In the late 1960s, my mother purchased many of the Marx Presidential figures from the local Weingarten’s grocery store in Texas City, Texas for my bother and I. My LBJ figure was the puny version and it looked physically small and pathetic compared to the rest of the presidential figures. At the time, I showed it to my father and he figured the reason the toy manufacturer made LBJ look so bad was because so many people hated LBJ due to the Vietnam War. I didn’t even know the larger, more robust version of LBJ existed until I recently (2019) started collecting the Marx figures from eBay.
