Ed Borris has always wanted to do his own figures. He took the plunge had a limited  number of  figures.

I got these interesting swoppet type figures from Detlef Heerbrand. I have no idea who made them. The figures are 70mm.

Here is a cute little person with halberd and paper.  He is either Manurba or Linde.  One of the terms you will hear me use is knowledgeable. Despite what people say that I am an expert, I defer to the other term.  I have a strong working knowledge of figures. I know who made most of the figures. If not other people will help id them.

This working knowledge helps in knowing if there is a market for the figures.  I know people are looking to enhance their scenes or set ups.  For example I keep an eye out for saloon women done by Starlux and Elastolin. These figures people will buy to fill their western scenes.

This goes back to my childhood of doing stories and making figures various characters in the stories.

Here we have the Marx 60mm Doughboy advancing with bayonet rifle and gas mask. One thing annoying on Marx 60mm there are so little action poses in certain sets. The WI doughboys has only two, the other are marching. It is shame Marx did not do more action poses.

I got plenty of alike looking swappet figure as those from former DDR east Germany as a child,i still got some.
There were sold x a fort and in bags too till 80s .There several makers.
Andrea Dittman once send me a big lot x swapping w figures from mine.
Agree in lack of Marx lack shooting firing poses not lack action poses.
For me action is any from hand fighting, advancing, charging ,clubing, stabing, else
Marx waste many poses marching, wounded,w bannner, drumers, else out entire 16 poses set leaving few x true action poses.
In playset many times the firing poses distribution amount was very poor versus non shooting poses.
Big exsample are the german WW2 set have so many odd poses, the officer shooting ants at floor, the one w horrible MP40 firing down sideways!? and so on.
Many of those charging ha e the rifle sideways like above soldier WW1 .
Yet is one of the few or first plastic true ww1 made with mask that almost none dare to do and were used so much.

The Marx German officer did not have a weapon in hand at all. Perhaps he was directing someone else to shoot the ants on the floor.

    • admin says:

LOL I agree the officer is a wasted pose. He could also telliing his dog to come here. The only way he looks right is if he has table in front and he is point a spot on a map.

    • ERWIN F SELL says:

Paul ,the one pose of german officer i never though if ot idea, that is a good point .
it was supposed to be showing ,not shooting …as usually using my phone with other miss spelled .

The same hand pointing been use and waste in many officer my marx ,just changing the direction or arm with finger ,Either marx was po pacifist or ati gun a lot as his war army figure plenty even lack weapons at all .
The one firing to ants at floor with his left is silly stupid pose of horrible Custer pose or advancing left hand pistol japanese officer
Even japanese 54mm,3″ and 6″ poses along Russian have their odd officer poses firing to air all the way up or down or pointing too
MARX anatomic pose depiction was very well done as well faces .
The main problem with MARX were their many odd poses when firing a weapon if any or and lack gear ammo ,backpack in many modern soldiers most .Those advancing such WW2 russian and french 54mm have the weapons in almost not possible way and complete non action pose as if their were running away or to pass it to other.Really aue dispainme even x 10 years old kid back then .Thanks God i did not have those as kid.

In the other side of coin other makers such ,airfix matchbox with atlantic and dulcop put almost same officer german and american pose.Looks like not creativity by artist here .Yet their set are true action poses even with smaller of 7 poses such Airfix not wasting in poses to play war.

  3. Detlef Heerbrand says:

Hello .. the swoppet Cowboys are from the former GDR. Brand is V.E.B. Spielzeugland .. the Dwarf is from Heinerle Aesthetics Gallery and the series is called “Lucky Man” there are six different of them ..

  4. ed borris says:

I’ve seen a ton of different swoppet figures over the years, but I have to say those are perhaps the worst I have ever seen. Those weapons are terrible and it looks like they are all wearing derby hats, someone must have been watching the Bat Masterson TV show too much.

    • Don Perkins says:

Ed, will you be unveiling your outstanding new Alamo Mexican figures at the Columbus Toy Soldier Show this Sunday? I know Rick Keller & Steve Connell would like to see you there.

      • ed borris says:

No, I won’t be there, anyway, I don’t have the figures yet, just the pictures. I’m still recovering from Chicago, that long drive wears me out.

        • Don Perkins says:

I’m guessing those figures are 54mm, scaled to match the Marx Alamo Mexicans. Am I correct? Is the final product going to be in both colors, including the Marx metallic blue?

    • admin says:

I agree they are not great figures, but they are interesting in a way. They are example of East German toy making. The company saw that swoppets were popular and made their own not very good.

      • ERWIN F SELL says:

I agree too ,every figure/maker has it own like and flavor ,i play with them as mexican as child when first got them.
As many ply as child with what today are considered ugly by us as adult as children were the few option and free accepted plus fun .
Some others made DDR swappet were better done .

There other swappet DDR figures as well made i will have some photo of mine …

  5. ERWIN F SELL says:

    Ed ,Hope not take personal.
    As matter of interview questions.
What would be price range x these figures as well availability!?
    Why the name choose!?(Beast production)
Would you able do photo scale w other brand comprare!?
Does figures are cast with add on color in mix pouring at making or colored resin!?
The pose w musket or A rifle in left hand looks a bit rare yet interesting well done .What idea was after or x it!?.
The heavy mustache hair face looks like a veteran in mexican soldier of Sapaniard cast/breed ,or is you !?
    Any intention on it .?
Heavy mustache had not been taken in consideration by most maker before and today unless few and or charters poses. This really turn my attention on this pose .Well done.

Are they single piece mold or parts put together such Conte,TSSD and others!?
I like figures and will get if able then to use as SA independence/Revolutionary wars or late napoleonic wars spaniards.Italian and austrian soldiers .

My nickname is the Beast. I got the nickname after a softball game long ago when I got into a minor altercation during the game.

Since I had the master sculpts I decided I would throw my hat in the ring so to speak and produce some figures, albeit in a very small way. I have no illusions of getting rich or even making money off of these figures. Just something I always wanted to do.

They are Barzso size figures as they are originally Barzso master sculpts that I purchased from him. They were designed as Alamo Mexicans and they are a single piece. I don’t have any of the figures right now to take comparrison pictures as they are with Larry Patterson who made the molds and cast the figures. The guy with his hat in his hand was originally Uncas from Last of the Mohicans. The two firing poses were originally Battle of New Orleans British and the guy advancing is from I believe Braddocks Defeat. The original master sculpts were just revised with green stuff, so they are exactly the same size as the figures that were originally cast in those sets.

If I sell them they will be $30.00 for a set of four, since I will only have 10 sets of the four poses they are a very limited edition at this time. I can probably have more made if I so desire and I probably will, but it will be a month or more down the road. We have discussed using some of my conversions to make addtional molds for defenders, but nothing is definite at this time.

I believe they were cast in tan and then painted with acrylic paint. They are for sure painted, the color they were cast in is in doubt though.

Nice Job Ed ! Never can too many figures !
