Odds and Ends May

Odds and  Ends May  will have some updates and have some new items of information.  I will be showing some interesting figures from around the world including the Blue Box Sir Francis Drake.  another thing I will be showing is the Trojan Roy Rogers figures. This was a small company in England in the 1950’s that did series of figures that very few collectors outside of  United Kingdom are aware of.  So take a seat and enjoy.

Odds and  Ends May  Updates

Odds and Ends May We have some more photos of the new Replicants figures. These photos are from our very good friend Peter Evans.  We can see that smuggler with his left leg up is holding a blunderbuss . The highwayman reminds me of the  Britains Deetail cowboy bandit holding two pistols.

Odds and Ends May Here is the Battle of Hastings Figure poses.

Odds and Ends May

Finally we have medieval monk and nun. These two figures sold out at the show.  Steve Weston has said he will be getting more. You can order them from him at this link or order them so he will bring them to OTSN.

Lone Star African Native as American Indian

Odds and Ends May

One other photo we got from Peter Evans is a Lone Star African Native as American Indian.  The figure was painted red and as you can see from the photo does not work as Indian due to the large shield. I wonder why  they did it?

Blue Box Character Figures

Odds and Ends May

The photo above is Blue Box Sir Francis Drake.  I know  that they did a Robin Hood and Morgan Pirate (I may be wrong on the name on that figure). They were done in a silver and painted.  As you can see they were placed on a block  with the name. I first ran into these figures in England at a toy show.  My good friend Brian Carrick  clued me that a dealer was selling a large lot of plastic figures for ninety pounds. I looked it over and handed the dealer his money. I heard the dealer was happy until someone clued him in who I was. They told if Stad bought that lot you know he is going to make money. That dealer has been careful around me ever since.  I gave Brian some of the figures from the lot for cluing me in.

Odds and  Ends MayTrojan Roy Rogers Figures

Odds and Ends MayThe Trojan Roy Rogers Figures were figures I found when I first went over to United Kingdom for the Plastic Warrior Show.  My mother had passed away in February 1988 and I decided to go to the Plastic Warrior Show in May. I went over and  found many amazing figures including some of the above figures. At first  I thought these figures might have been done by Marx UK. I later found out through Peter Evans  and Brian Carrick that they were made by a company called Trojan.

Odds and Ends May

Trojan was a small company that made plastic figures in 1950’s. They did some nice Australians and some other figures. For some reason they copied the Marx Roy Rogers Figures. Some of the figures they kept the same as the Marx. On the mounted Roy Rogers they changed the waving hand to a pistol.  On the 60mm cowboy punching the reduced him to 45mm.

Odds and Ends May

The Pat Brady  and Roy Rogers were kept the same.  All the figures were factory painted. I have a reproduction of their catalog and will try to find it.

    Interesting in all.
    So trojan copied marx too.?
Are they 52/53mm as the otgers figures they did?
    I got few cowboys only.
The BB charater historical figures is of 33 poses. All in most not action .
Thet were limited run as the rare metal and plastic 90s sets

  2. erwin says:

I love the Dick Turpin character pose and others as well most. I want those definitely.
The Nun and Monk are nice but if a medieval or pre 1500 Nun incorrectly depicted with hand position, her clothing very light too. Both are missing Rosary ;A most for both religious order assistant/servants at any time era to carry at all time during prayer. I have few made in china variation with more historical accuracy than these.
They will look more as Lutheran or post XVII century ,specially the Nun.

  3. Mark McNamara says:

Nice,Thanks for sharing Paul ! The Dick Turbin figure reminds me of the Marx 6 inch cowboy with two pistols !

  4. erwin says:

    Ed.
If I commission Dick Turpin pose to you .Could be able make him a rider??
I know he had a cape, but was thinking to get him riding as folklore tales always sing.

    Comments separated.
Funny UK always has so many not figures characters. King Arthur,Robin Hood,Dick Turpin and others depicted-Nice!!!

  5. Darren Hatley says:

Nice figures, I especially like the Replicants Smuggler with the flaming Torch as he looks like he could belong to most Eras, And I like the Replicants Battle Of Hastings figures. Replicants always come up with a steady stream of Nice figures from time to time and long may it continue.

    • Erwin says:

Yes and they are true 54 mm too.So nice add on.The hasting second set is a good match x a call to arms Normans and emhard viking x hasting .

  6. Darren Hatley says:

Yes i do have quite a few Replicants figures and as you say they are a true 54mm which is the scale i mostly collect. They also match up well with many other figures. Replicants has made quite a few small sets of Medieval figures which is Great, But i would love to see them have a crack at some Ancient figures such as Egyptian, Persian ETC just for a change, But if they want to stick to Medieval times and up thats fine.

  7. Ed Borris says:

They did a Roman once for Stad.

    • Darren Hatley says:

Hi Ed yes your right about that, I forgot about those and in fact i do have them. By the way ive just thought of another set that Replicants or someone else could have a crack at and thats Aztec,Inca,Maya. Im sure a lot of collectors would be excited by that? And the only 54mm Aztec figures i can think of are Barzso but they are rare and expensive. Anyway its just an idea.

    • Mark McNamara says:

Yes they did Ed and it is a very nice looking figure , Marx Roman quality in my opinion, I have 1 or 2 !

  8. Erwin says:

    Yes.I agree in precolombian indians.
But I had heard not a good sale at all.
Barzso set I got box 27 playset ar Chicago show.In fact only playset I have from then because the building are very unique.
But it was not a good sale here in US and limited.Took years to sale then
I carry and sale AMEX brand aztecz and conquistadors and they are actually sale more to apain, france and germany plus mexico.
Few here and very few to UK ever buy
So that is reason not much done as not much interest.
Even though in gamers is a big era .
I carry and sold out few others too rare brands from south america, but not longer produced.
I think Replicant as limited run try made things popular to get fast recovery as is logic.
Medieval will be always.pirats,bandits.,cowboys ,US civil war and any war related to UK too.
It was by stad the only roman nice pose done, the pose resemble marx but in a much historical accurate.I sale them too and in varied poses with spears/else too.
I agree they should do more ancient.
Greecks and others are popular now I guess after 300 ,sequel, eagle and others film.
Vikings are part of century england and britain history.I guess that will be a good sale x Replicant too.
Celts and picts from island should be done too.A complete forgotten history era that most british toy soldiers company had not even touch, barrely done.
Again I’m base only in what replicant could and will be profitable x them.

  9. ed borris says:

TSSD did some unnamed Barbarians and Romans, the Barbarians look generic enough to be almost anything to me. Interestingly enough, the guy that sculpted the Barbarians tried toy soldiers for the very first time, previous to that he did baseball and sports statues. Oddly enough if you look closely at them you can see the baseball actions in them. I talked to him at OTSN and that’s what he told me, the one swinging a club sure reminds me of a baseball swing.

  10. Erwin says:

    Interesting about sculptord ed.
Never knew of it.I think they look pretty decent but at close look I notice some odd arms and legs disproportion.
TSSD are in 65 mm least as same as Rherilea bretons and Reamsa gauls.
Starlux did gauls and barbarian,as well Elastolin. But again in the big size scale range.
But none represent any early celts from british island. The closes are the ITALERI gauls .
I’m wonder why so few cover any british maker when they represent most pre roman era and even part of it.
I think I nice chariot w celts, druids, early scotts and other should be a good sale sets.

  11. Tom Black says:

Replicants figures fill a lot of gaps in American and British history. Their poses are well done and historically accurate. That said, they have a big problem with flash and facial sculpting. Engineer Bassevich are leagues above them.

  12. bill nevins says:

I was never a fan of Replicants. The sculpting is amateurish and the figures are poorly cast. On top of that, they are way to expensive for the poor product that you get in return.
The only figures that I kept are the ACW dismounted Cavalry, which are not horrible.
Not great, but not as bad as some of the others I’ve seen.

    • Don Perkins says:

Bill, you should take a look at the two sets of Robin Hood/Saxon archers released by Replicant’s in the last couple of years. They are excellent. I’m also impressed by their Trafager Naval set, their new smugglers, and now, their new medieval monk and nun, which look quite well-sculpted.

To me, the new monk and nun look for all the world to me like Martin Luther (who was himself an Augustinian monk when he delivered his famous “I cannot and will not recant” speech) and his wife, the runaway ex-nun Katie. Does anyone in England have any knowledge of Peter’s intention on this?

It would explain the lack of a rosary that Erwin alluded to.

      • Don Perkins says:

But I do agree Replicant’s figures are on the expensive side. But I tell myself this is what happens when something is produced in limited quantities, because the market won’t justify anything else.

    • admin says:

      Bill
Peter Cole did sculpting at Britains and has done other figures other comes including me so I would not say amateurish. They are low runs therefore the high cost. He has done many interesting figures that larger makers would not touch. I like the news reporter he did for the American Civil War and the Pinkerton bowler hat. Checking Weston’s the smugglers are 4 figures for 6 pound which is $2.10 not bad for new figures. Grant you went you bring them over or buy from a U.S dealer they will be higher. A way around it s to do OTSN or have someone pick the figure from Steve when does the show.

      • erwin says:

In fact $2.10 is very low, the lowest in short run production at actual price as far I see.
Versus others US/else run figures limited production with out shipping.
        AMEX-$2.50-4.00 per figure
        Action casting-$5.00+ per figure
Barzso resin -$2.25+ per figure(most discontinued or not even reproduced)-so price is getting more as collectible now

        Russian limited production
        EB -$3 TO 4 .00 per figure
        PL-$7-9 PER FIGURE
I think Replicant is pretty good in price range x their quality offer ,variety, diversity and poses done, not common seen .
Neither hard to get if do a bundle buy on mail using economic shipping from UK.
CTS carry few sets x some times ,but I think are from those collectors left over purchase they do and then resale after.
once a wile they get then out x sale

      • Andy says:

Ordered 4 sets of Replicants figures from Steve on 5/18/16 & received them today, 5/25/16; 7 days later. Total was $43.47 including $7.45 shipping from UK. (Would have cost me more than $7.45 to go to OTSN. 🙂 If I got same order from a dealer in MA that carries some Replicants, I would have paid around $75, plus 3 of the sets were “Out of Stock” with him. Shipping would have been close to $10. You cannot tell me Steve is expensive. Also ordered something today through eBay from a toy company in NYC for $21 with $9 shipping charge & let’s see how long it takes to get 50 miles to here in CT. Bought it from him because no one else has it. Not a likeable guy.

        • admin says:

Like I said it is a reasonable price to start with and shipping from Europe is cheaper than here. I have to charge a minimum of $14.00 to ship from here to Europe. Yes I know who you are talking about in NY. He told me years ago someone will pay his price. With the internet people are finding other options.

        • Mark McNamara says:

Andy, if you don’t mind me asking ,where in Ct do you live ,I live in Meriden ?

          • Don Perkins says:

I’m wondering about Andy’s town as well, since my wife and I, many years ago, resided in Cheshire and Hamden.

  13. Erwin says:

I think replicants are not horrible at all.
Some figures lack detail because different types plastic color blend and mold end product not too deep.
    Poses are very well done.
I agree costly but as mentioned by Don and other,it is the logic on.limited produced.
Still they are in the true 54 mm scale range and less coatly than russian resent figures and action casting stengels figures.
The plastic is much less fragile than those mentioned figures brands too.
The Nun by clothing look either an intern novice or A Sister.A pre 1500 nun(convent) order would be more heavy clothed.
I think the anglican idea was involved in the sculpture .

  14. peter evans says:

The copy of the Lone*Star native figure is moulded in a very light brown plastic

  15. Erwin says:

I think the lone star could work as Polynesian or similar culture warriors.
The long shield exact as that is depicted by Portuguese and spaniards in Caribbean indians battles scenes.
Few tribes of caribean used it.There are contemporary depiction of it by spaniards and wrriten mentioning the use of by some Arawca indigenous warriors tribes.

  16. Darren Hatley says:

I agree that the Replicants figures are not the Best sculpted figures around but they are Good enough in my opinion and as Erwin said they are much cheaper than the Russian figures that are coming out at the moment although they are very nice figures.
I understand that some certain figures dont sell so well which is a shame as it would be Great as Erwin said if some New Warrior figures like Aztec,Inca,Celts,Picts,Mongol,Samuraii,Medieval Scottish Warriors ETC were to come out as im sure it would create a stir and excitement in our hobby.
Dont get me wrong i love the Robin Hood, Knights,Crusaders and Roman figures but there are loads of them out there to buy and im just saying it might be Good to see something else come out, Although of course i understand that Manufacturers will bring out the figures that they deem will sell the best. Although it was Really nice to see the Russian company Basevich Engineer bring out the Ancient Jews and Assyrians figures recently which look Great and are something different, And i Hope that they come out with some more pleasant surprizes over the coming months and years.

  17. Tom Black says:

What I found frustrating with Replicants is trying to take the flash off the faces. I bought the sets of Medieval Archers/Peasant Infrantry and they are in nice action poses but trying to take all the flash off the faces I disfigured the nose/eye areas. Some I replaced the heads. Also the faces all look the same with large wide noses and very deep set eye sockets. I expect better quality for the price paid.

    • erwin says:

I like then as they are. If they will be as detail as EB and PL from Russia will cost twice the price I bet.
The faces of Vietnam only figures by “casting” I saw are funny looking too and cost way more if you ever get to see them again as they are very sneaky to find around. I mean no body sale them and maker do not respond to emails.

Some figures/brands I got them x poses and not worried about features and deep detail. The western salon, US camp/casualties civil war and other are unique poses done by Replicant never seen by any other brand in past 20plus years .
What impress me more is after seen few complaining about new production in the big 60+ scale range. Now the not appreciating for Replicant ,the only one making in the true 54 mm line new figures.
I think we should thank they are still in business since 90’s ,lasting better than most come and gone x good.
I agree not face detail and a bit gloss, but again not a horrible figures.
I think horrible are BMC Mexican and WW2 Germnas /ELSE and many BMC figures, or early CTS deformed in all sizes CTS WW2 Germans with helmets crushed by stones and children heads with short arms and with exception cloned Marx poses(that were the best in detail)of course in that set plus many more ,still most collectors bought them and still does.
But I understand we can never have every body happy!!
      My perception and thoughts.
      Best…
