Can You Help Kirk Larson in His Quest

Can You Help Kirk Larson in His Quest we all get  quest in our hobby. Sometimes it is an item we had as a child. Or it could be an item we saw at show or the internet. Today we are looking for Kirk’s Larson quest.

Can You Help Kirk Larson in His Quest  The Item

I’m writing in to your august body of bloggers with another obscure  toy memory. It concerns not exactly a toy soldier.  I am a now looking for  vintage sci fi toy. A set from Timmee/Processed Plastic that I got for Xmas of 1977 or 1978 when we lived in Fargo, ND.

I couldn’t read back then so packaging was ignored. It contained the fairly common laser rifle and space helmet with antennae on top. The set also had  a light-up sword. I have never ever seen the sword in 16 years of ebaying and a lifetime of attending toy shows.

I’ve only ever seen a catalog picture of it on PlaidStallions 70s blog.

The link I’ve attached is from the 1978 True Value Hardware catalog. The set is in the upper right corner   It  is even slightly different than what I had. The set in the photo shows a laser pistol and some Lunar Patrol/Galaxy Laser Team figures instead of the laser rifle. The sword is there–probably no longer than 26 inches. It had a transparent “blade” and a light bulb in the handle, with a sort of oblong hand guard. If you look at the Darth-Vader like figure in the Timmee space series, it looks just like the sword he’s holding.

I couldn’t tell you what happened to my sword, but it probably whacked something a bit too hard and snapped off the blade then went in the trash. I suspect my folks got this for me because my dad remembered pretending to be “Captain Video” when he was a kid in the early 1950s. So if anybody ever sees one of these, I’m a guy who will pay stupid money for it….

Can You Help Kirk Larson in His Quest My Thoughts

I can not remember every seeing this piece myself.  Since Kirk sent me this email.  He found photo of the item. On a space forum.  Here is that link as well.  You will have to scroll down a bit it was in 1978 Alden’s Catalog.

I remember seeing that set myself in the late 70s. I was too old for those kinds of dress-up toys by that year, (but I never got too old for toy soldiers except for a brief foolish period from my late teens to early 20s).

I bought a bag of the Galaxy Laser Team figures at that time and found it kind of cool that the figures had the same weapons and gear that they were also selling as toys. As Kirk said, the Darth Vader type had the sword. Also, the antenna-head Chewbacca has the rifle, and the Han Solo/Buck Rogers has the helmet and blast pistol.

I think I saw a broken blaster rifle at a church bazaar once in the late 1990s, but I have never seen any of the other items, new or used since about 1981.

My kid brother had that set. Us older kids referred to it as “the poor man’s” light saber as it was not as nice as the other kids’ “real” light sabers.

I will check with him and my folks to see if may still be around.

On another quest, was there ever a re-issue of the Marx Fort Apache 2- story dark brown blockhouse? I helping on a school project regarding Ohio’s western forts in the late 1790s. The building would be perfect to be the basis of these forts. Please let me know if anyone would have the re-cast.

Are you absolutely sure there WAS a recast of the 2-story Fort Apache blockhouse, Jack? I don’t think there was.

  3. Jack Gibbons says:

No, I don’t know. I could buy one on EBAY but you usually have to pay for entire boxed sets.

I remember seeing those sets in stores in town here in the 70’s. I had one of the Lazer pistols but I don’t remember which verison.
I thought that CTS made a reissue of the blockhouse some years back, but I could be wrong as I don’t collect western stuff.
One quest of mine is a set of CTS Bocage/Hedgerows. These are different from the Conte Hedgerows. You can see a picture of them in Issue #33 of Playset Magazine, the D-Day issue.
Stad, what about starting a section for us to talk about our quest items?

  5. Wayne W says:

CTS did have a foam version of the blockhouse as I recall it sold for about 49.95 – they used it for their own playsets. I just checked – there is a newer version for 59.95

There’s a Marx blockhouse available on ebay:

It’s missing a door, but not a bad price right now.
