T D Barnecutt Civil War Mortar Project The Project

Hi Paul,

I thought your readers might be interested in this project. Recently I have been working on 1/32 scale drawings depicting the 4 different size model 1861 mortars which were used by the Federal Army and Navy during the Civil War. I have made the drawings so I can create accurate scale models of the mortars.  I also want to make some models of the mortar wagons used to transport the smaller siege mortars. I’d like to get feedback from anyone interested in this subject. Thanks!

Sounds like a great idea would also be useful for the American war of independence and the French Indian war. Would also like to see some ammo and powder wagons in this scale it would be lovely to get something you normally cannot get keep up the good work.

Intersting .I think shoul be a good idea.
If x salev.Definettely will be great as far limited produced and not costly I think.
The above model should not be used x any other war prior to 1850.They were designed base in the Crimea war iron first type mortar pieces.
For revolution war or AIW will be too anachronistic .
The chinese made resently under DGN is more apropiated.
    My thoughts.

The smaller mortar that Marx made in soft plastic was based on the 13 inch M1861 but of course it is not to scale. As far as I know the 8 inch M1861 and 10 inch M1861 mortars have never been offered or produced as toys or models, but the drawings allow the possibility for hobbyists to scratch build their own versions. If anyone is interested in more details they can contact me.
Erwin is right, these wrought iron mortars were used 186o’s – 1890’s and obsolete after that. Earlier mortars were of a different design with the trunnions located at the rear of the tube, as in the larger toy mortar which Marx produced.

      TD Barnecut .
You may use 3D format program 3D builder to transfer any Blue print and convert to simple build model ,then PR file for /scan -printing sendinf to many companies that do printing services or just take to place where they can print one sample x you.
This piece is very simple to make I think. The amount using 3D filament spooler plastic-resin is not much, neither required the best quality x it
Again if produced my though in price to be sold should not be the$10.00 per piece.
      My opinion of course…..

Great information, Erwin. I didn’t know there was an easy way to convert 2D into 3D design.
