  1. TDBarnecut says:

Awesome pirates. Too bad Marx never mass produced these in soft plastic.

  2. Christian Aldo says:

    Nice figures.
To do the subject Pirates properly, I think one would have to do about 30 poses?
But it would be one hell of a set!

    • TDBarnecut says:

If you combine the 13 Marx 54mm pirate poses with the 6 Ideal 54mm pirate poses that gives you 19 poses – just create 11 more poses and there are your 30.

Someone has the MIB Marx 54mm painted hard plastic pirates for sale on line for $75 per set. The box looks just like Erwin’s.

      • Erwin says:

        TD.
He is the seller who sold to me.
He claim had few sets from old warehouse here in US.
He first sold one set loose x $54.00 in not box and mix with some not marx.
Then one like one I have x $69.99 in 2015
I think he is a lucky seller.
But I think that price is low considering the rare set.

      • Christian Aldo says:

19 poses would be a great start!

  3. Lester Lessa says:

Ahoy Ted, The Marx pirates did come in soft plastic and hard plastic. I have one set of each each figure. The only exception is The pirate with telocope and pirate on cruches only came in hard plastic in my sets. I also have the pirate ship. Back in the early 80s, I saw the acsssories fof the set. The dealer wanted 15.oo for each piece. I think there was about 18 pieces. Do the math. nemosfan.

  4. erwin says:

As far I red and is what was wrote in both PFPS edition, the unpainted set(I got two poses) only was never mass produced. The sets and accessories ever sold by few collectors come from an old stock found after MARX warehouse close down in late 70’s.Not from Marx sales sets.
The only ever done mold with 12 poses was sent to HK to be produced with the WOW series as ((painted hard plastic as pictures I sent by me with box showed and posted before in 1963)) ,barely a year after mold ever created in 1962.
Would an unpainted full set ever mas produced and distributed more information and second mold need to ever been done as other set was been done in HK by them. Neither information had never /ever been told in magazines else. If so ,a clear proof of it with write correct data need to bring up to update such claim.
The following link is a extract of what was wrote in PFPC years ago.

  5. Mark McNamara says:

    beautiful figures ,great detail !

  6. Erwin says:

I think the pose w two two pistol was supose to be captain kidd small verssion and as other 12 poses were intended x treasure island playset first ,it would not match as Long John Silver was handicapped
Did marx may be ever plan a captain kid sepatared set??
Also I notice the extreme similarly in sculpting between the 54mm marx and ideal 6 poses and style .Wonder if same artist did both.?

  7. Christian Aldo says:

I was recently in a hobby store and saw a bow of the IDEAL 6 pose pirate set, but to my surprise the set included a 7th pose?? Does anyone know where it came from?
Unlike the others it had a base?

    • Daniel Murphy says:

Was that the Glencoe reissue set that had the Ideal pirates and the 54mm Marx pirate captain with crossed pistols?

  8. Christian Aldo says:

Where can I see all 13, of the 54mmMARX PIRATE POSES??

    • erwin says:

      Aldo .
Look at posting here that said (Marx 54 mm pirates) few days ago ,it has 11 poses in the painted version , pose #12 is Pirate advancing with knife and treasure which is above “this” same page and the so “call 13 poses”(not done x same mold as other 12 ) is the one with two pistol crossed captain looking style.
That was all and are all 54 mm poses made by Marx in pirates. Also see a link I post here again and were many pictures above are come from .
      http://marxwildwest.com/pirates.html

If the pirate you saw with the other 6 ideal either original or recast is mounted in a pedestal base it may be the MARX captain kid done exclusively for the unpainted 60 mm pirates 8 poses sets and never mass produced at all .

  9. Tom Black says:

54mm Pirates sets have some sort of curse. Conte was supposed to make a plastic set and it never happened. Marx never produced this nice set. Barszo made a very nice set but in resin and rubber molds? (I think). The 54mm Ukranian set is hard to find in the USA. The only nicely sculpted 54mm set available in the USA is the Ideal Pirates. Too bad, we could have quite a crew with all of the above!

  10. Erwin says:

Safari pirates are nice sculpting, all chinese made .Many not bad at all,US toys brands,Charben from UK nice 9 poses recast, reamsa 3 poses recast out of 12 original.BUM 4 poses recast.
Just to mention few easy around.
Ukrainian?.You mean marx 57/58 mm same 8 as WOW!?
They are 9.00 to 12.00 with free shipping all over ebay and please they are not match with 54mm.If you had not buy then I made u guys awere of it.They are more close to 60mm.I will have to make some pictures so you know how they look.
Technolog from russia did a nise 5 set pirates.
Last barzso pirates were done in more plastic type than original resin used.I check it when first saw them and noticed.
    I think there plenty around.
For tall scale tim mee, marx umpainted 8 poses or recast made in 7 poses ONLY.
Plenty more amscan brand I have too.
Amex brand I carry and others.
    I think there a lot.!!!
I got a hold army of them
More pirates had been done by toy soldiers companies than any sailors real navy figures.
And that is not counting germany, france,Italian and UK production.

    • Jon Burk says:

It would be fun to see the Mexican company that did the Marx Arabs and FFL do some copies of the 54mm Marx pirates. Even if they came out as 52mm,they would be a great addition to pirates collections, and fit in with Ideal, Hing Fat and others.

I actually want sailors, but pirates fit the bill pretty well. Just would like to have less hooks, peg legs and eye patches! Replicants Nelson’s Navy and smugglers figures add in to the pirates, though a bit pricey. But they are great figures and you can’t have too many gun crews!

      • erwin says:

That is a good idea I think!!
They may like do too the 60 mm MARX 4 poses 1812 sailors, but only two poses are action ,others are less but cold be used as and converted.

        • Jon Burk says:

Erwin, good idea with the sailors poses, too. Do you know how they do those? Like pantograph or just copy a sculpt from the old figures?
