Remco World War One Box

12208511_10153676303594876_2342039099110849574_nRemco did a very interesting set of figures and vehicles for World War One. What we have in the photo above is the Doughboy Set.  What is interesting the box lists the allied side as Doughboy, while many people listed the figures as British.  The set came with five different figures, tank, weapon carrier for the shells, cannon that fired the shells, truck and plane. The figures are 45mm and came with a tab on the bottom that had to be broken off once out of the box.  The vehicles are fantasy pieces.  I do not remember off hand if the tank fired or not.  On the plane it is a biplane that was flown in World War One but I doubt it is any actual plane.

The enemy side uses the same vehicles only in red with different decals.  The major difference is the figures which are Germans with the picklehaube helmets.  They are in the same poses as the Doughboys.

    Looks accurate to me!

The plane is a SPAD.There is also a Red one with German insignia!!I guess it was captured by the Red Baron,LOL,also seen the vehicles, cannon etc in Red.I use the tanks(re-painted) as WW2 Japanese.I use the Armoured truck for Irish Civil War and other early 20th century Internal Security Ops

  3. Brian Nielsen says:

Aha! I have some rogue figures that have those tabs underneath. I see they fit in here. I figured it was packaging tabs but was not sure . Thanks for clearing that up.

Interesting configuration set and true .First time see depicted as Americans the brit figures.
The tank look very alike the hybrid used in Indiana Jones film.
The armored car is base in dutch post interwar colonial vehicle.captured and used by Japanese.
To me remco did a better armored set than Marx..
    Just x the wrong war..

I received the set with both Germans and Americans for Christmas 1965. I liked it because it was a war I didn’t have any figures for. Interestingly, the Americans were in red but their tanks were in blue and the Germans were in a light blue but their tanks and vehicles were in red. I just wish there had been more figures (always a general at heart).

There also seemed to be a problem in quality control as I remember one of my red figures (supposedly a doughboy) had a picklehaub helmet.

I had seen same error of colors too; I think this set in picture has also some German and British in same color. Wonder were they pack them!?
Interesting fact is Remco has the odd still nice idea to do armor for the WW1 set using early German soldiers when neither side used heavy armor and indeed WW1 was the less common battlefield with first tested but barely used tanks warfare and not telling tank versus tank encounter .Yet use of a full army-armor playset was an original variation and deviation of most common post ww2 army armor playset done my most companies of the time. I still like this set more than most Marx,Ideal,Lido,MPC,Payton and Aurburn because of the right scale vehicle versus 45 mm figures and planes as well era depicted. The texture bolt armor plate was a curiosity accurate detail take in consideration when doing the vehicles. The plane was very well copied.
Who knows what else the have in mind to do next and left in plans only!!

And by the time US finally got in the war the Germans weren’t using the pickelhaube helmet.

        • erwin says:

Yep and American did not use the British uniform and officer hat too.But Remco was American and funny part they start by doing two European forces.Another thing is most Remco toys as they name actually say (remote control.”)were more electronic related designed by the cofounder Isaac Heller. The remco WW1 set does not have any electronic toy or near appearance to typical Remco toys as most their other toys done with something mechanic or electronic movement inluded. So I’m wonder if this was indeed part of original Remco or some body else idea take over by Remo. As far I know other toys most produced were the later action figure and large scale car and doll toys that did not sale that well as the many electronic ships ,submarines, guns ,bazooka, mortar done early.

Erwin – A lot of the US forces wore French or British gear. The most common rifle was ol’ smelly (the Enfield SMLE). Even the US uniform proper looked rather Brit in appearance. The officer’s cap was very similar and the helmet was an outright copy, with a different liner system. I don’t know how detailed these figures are, but unless they are well detailed, it’ll be a tough call as to whether they are Brit or Yank.

    Maybe a spy?

  7. REMCO also made 45mm ancient Romans for their galleys and small about 30mm sailors for their carrier and submarine. The large Big Caesar galley, Matilda carrier and Barracuda sub were all B/O but not with any remote control. I had the sub, it rolled along with flashing lights and had spring shooting torpedoes and missiles. It was great. The WWI and Voyage figures had tabs for attachment into their window boxes to make for better store display.

  8. Greg Liska says:

The plane looks like a SPAD to me, also. Having been a helmet collector for a good part of my life, I can say that according to super-geeky and accredited research, the last Pickelhauben were withdrawn from front line service in early 1917. Surprisingly late. Even Landwehr units were getting steel helmets. A lot of the old leather picklehauben were turned into firemen helmets and other auxiliary services. As a collector, I had re-constructed a few pickelhauben from firemen’s helmets.
Oh, the memories in this thread! I had the sub and the aircraft carrier. I had a Big Caesar and those Romans were my faves! This led me to do what I did with the Thomas Toy Romans. Now I got them in a scale that fits with my WoW Romans. I had the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea set, too. The one with the 3 mini-subs. Those divers were TOO fragile for pool use! I’d never seen this WWI set until I was an adult collector.

Interesting on the last used time of early German helmet. No wonder I had seen some documentary photos of them wearing with later tunic and in one case next to a French late model tank. So what you saying confirm views that I thought were edited or fake and are not.
In other case .Another easy way to create French soldiers is using Italian same war figures as French Adrian helmets, boots and long coat were used by Italian,Rumanian and French alike . For that Dulcop,CO MA,NARDI and Waterloo had worked x me.
The hardest are the Russian and Turks because Russian tunic-tall boots and Turk headgear, pants and tunic are hard to match. AIP generic Russian help a bit. Turks and tropical British forces were not covered by AIP even though was a large and bloody front. Only Reamsa 65 mm Turks and some technolog sets could be use as turks of WW1 as well Egyptian AIP colonial troopers.

I had 5 remco romans ships , only one complete working and not tested x long, other I had bought to make a large battle so I got them with out sail and figures or else and fix-repair most part, included the always damage oars. I sold out one recently. So only 4 left as now I got two playmobil roman ships too.
I had seen the modern war ship and submarines but never like them much as too modern and to out scale parts like turrets and cannon that make them look too toy for my view/like now. Back them were incredible nice toys. The atomic sub with clear compartment was a nice innovated idea x play I think. I bought the sailors that I like because more in scale with other ship I got.
Here is nice link about REMCO cofounder.http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/11/business/isaac-heller-co-founder-of-remco-and-toymaker-to-a-generation-dies-at-88.html?_r=0

Greg ,yes I’m aware of it and their similarity in both uniforms as American tunic was copied from British too, you are correct. Original were first sold as British against German sets by factory instead of more logic as been America toy company (US against Germans).I guess because artist did German in early headgear/uniform they decide to go w British and later accept the correct similarity mention by you and do this set showed by admin but facing wrong Germans uniformed soldiers!!
But in these figures, the British and German both are very simple with out much gear.
The American wear most time Russet brown boots with canvas legging in fall/winter but leg wraps or “puttees” for wear, rather than the canvas leggings during campaign. CO British hat differ off American at time as well officer uniforms ,most American officer preferred wear the standard pre war Montana peak hat style or even helmet and used same uniform/tunic as NCO and private. British officer(OR) most time used the traditional hat(Bucket hat) and different tunic with open neck collar and two breast pocket only, still the 4 pocket tunic was wore too.

I have the figures ,the British officer looks more like CO and apparently it has a revolver but looks like a pistol too ; they have very simple rifles and because bullet case/straps(The bandoliers,1908 Shoulder straps plus 1908 Cross straps) and similarity of SMLE Enfield rifle with Sword Bayonet I will said looks more British but easy to pass x US soldiers/marines as you said and could be well used if not that accurate because of proper observation mention by you in uniforms .

  11. erwin says:

Greg with all do respect .I think you were referring to the Model 1917 American Enfield. Based in Excellent British 303 Pattern 1914 – p14 barely used by few British snipers and some Belgian forces.
The much different British Enfield SMLE was never adopted and used in any scale by US army I think!?.
The American produced the Model 1917 American Enfield in more quantity and used more than standard issue M1903 Springfield as was best. American did used all British and French light machine gun they can because the much better BAR was not well produced in mass till almost end of the war with only 9000 produced by war’s end .

  12. Greg Liska says:

Likely more of the Enfields were US produced, no issue there. Never the less, Enfields. This was also late in the game. When US troops were being committed piecemeal as France and the UK wanted (a US battalion added to a Euro Div’s TO&E) , they were getting Euro stuff.

  13. Greg Liska says:

It just sunk in….you have FOUR Big Caesars?! I envy you, brother! I have one that I extensively restored and would gladly take on more such beaters to get up a fleet.

  14. erwin says:

Yep; is call insanity, I was once dreaming making the big roman fleet, I can send pic of my ships to you later, three repaired left, one full complete in box.For some reason I sold out most roman figures, kept few poses each and the chariot.
I also have two renwal Viking(more like typical medieval galley ship) with all oars and rare Eldon true Viking ship(not to be confused with Aurora Viking 1:48 kit). Plus the Rare German made larger super nice Viking ship that I can not confirm If was done by Jean Hoefler and some suggest!? .Maybe markups could confirm it.
Playmobil- I like all accessories such the temples, colliseum and ships.I got two each, roman, viking and Egyptian plus one pirate.
The way some times I got vintage items is to search for them at toy shows , not toy soldier shows , also on eBay as generic “ship OR plastic ship”, some sellers list them low with out knowing true valor and brand because out of box or incomplete. I got the three non complete with some broken oars, not crew, no sail or catapult out box. I repair some and found loose replacement parts later x cheap price, took me from 2 to 3 years but did not paid even a fraction their real value.Another option I do for many years is I buy from bid sites international using economic(sea shipping service) So far I had never have any problem at al in payment or items arriving in over 17 years doing it.
Last year I took x sale one Roman ship almost complete with out figures and not working system but full battery compartment to Hackensack show . A buyer offer me $40.00 x just the sail mast to complete his, I sold it. Later on eBay I sold the same incomplete x $150.00.I have the bad habit of recycling when get bore of my excess collection or replace with other. I call it funny collecting game as make me go for same items later if I like. I know is silly!!LOL!!

  15. Greg Liska says:

I don’t get much chance to look around physically. From 2001 t0 2013 I was more out of the country than in, and for a year plus at a time. Not in places you’d look for toys, either. I’ve also not been as dogged about it. I sort of forgot about my desires. I have my one Big C and a Playmobil Roman Galley and I have a Playmobil Viking ship, plus some sort of hull that I’ve got rigged generically enough to be most anything. Lastly – about 30 MPC ships in both sizes. It really IS enough, but you know how toy collectors can be. I’ve done a lot of what you described, too. Got rid of stuff that I later sought to replace.
