Food

Since having my session in the hospital in January, I have seen many changes in my life. One area is the food I eat.  Heart patients are advised to have a low salt diet. This is a major problem for some people as they are use to salt being a major part of their diet. Some cases I know people salt food that already has been salted It is something that people do because of the taste.

For me a low salt diet has been already part of my life. Laurie has been preparing food with little or no salt for years, so it was easy for me go on this diet life style with minor changes.  One thing I have started to do is read labels for much salt is in a product. I am amazed how some foods have high levels of salt and it is not necessary. If I see a certain product with a high salt content, I will pass on it.

The worse place for high salt is fast food  The recommended amount of salt we should take in our daily diet is 2400 mg. At some of the fast food places the burger is over 1500 mg and we have not included the soda and fries. So I avoid these places with a passion

We do like to go out once a week and we found that we enjoy some of the diners in the area. These places are a better buy for your money over fast food Two of the diners we have been to recently give you soup, salad bar, main course and vegetable for a very reasonable price. Yes the salt content is going to be higher than a meal at home, but I balance it out with watching my salt rest of the week.

As I said before this is just one aspect of my life style change.  Since I have been out of the hospital, I have lost an additional fifty pounds on top of the forty pounds I lost in the hospital.  Part of this transformation has been my rehab sessions, which are three times a week. The sessions have build up my strength and renew a love for exercise.  I tell people about what happen to me not for any sympathy, but to make people aware of this condition. I ran into a old friend recently and mention what happen to me. He replied that he had been diagnosis with atrial fibrillation two years ago.  He had no idea that he had it until it was discovered.  This is a silent danger that could lead death if you  don’t catch it time.

I have been overweight most my life. I have tried various diets with no luck. This not the way to lose it, but I am glad I did.

I have learn over the last year how food effects you. One of the biggest dangers is the amount salt in food. We are geared that we need to add salt, but too much can hurt you. I am trying to eat more fruit and we have added turmeric a spice that has many benefits to our diet.
Funny you should mention clothes, as I am planning to get some new jeans and slacks this weekend to replace the ones I have as they are too big. I will be happy to do a photo so you can recognize me.
