From time to time modern toy makers will make figures in 54-60mm. One of those was Mattel  who did a series of Judge Dredd. These figures were made in conjunction with movie starting Sylvester Stallone in 1995. There were six different sets available with a total of 17 figures.  With the exception of set six each set has three different figures.  Also it look likes one figure may have been repeated in the series.

These figures will be usuually in a science fiction setting. Ugly Pugely (He is one on the left with knife.) he could be used in a modern setting. Looking at Ebay the figures sell for about $2.00 each.

MPC made a series of vehicles to go with their ring hand figures.  The vehicles were very simple. They did something that would be a no no today.  The barrel on the tank and Weasel were wood.  I bought a lot of the vehicles recently and got both in green and steel blue.

I am curious on knowing where the steel blue vehicles were issued.

To go with our going interest of Buffalos, we showcase the Beton buffalo. It is hard plastic and hollowcast. The buffalo is four inches long and two inches high.

Going through junk boxes I find  odd and interesting item. Here we have a copy of Beton horse. The problem who made it. It is not Ajax or Archer. Do you know?

Mattel in 1995 introduce Fighting men.  This was part of the Thingmaker line most notable Creepy Crawlers. The set had six molds to give front and back of  the  figures. Wires were given to put into the figure so you make him bendable. This is the first one I have seen. Did you have one of these sets?

I had a set of OD green vehicles that had aluminum tubing for the barrels, Had bought it at WT Grants in the mid 1960’s. Are there 10 different NON- ringhand 54mm GI’s I can only find 9 dfferent???

    • yes 10 poses. prone shooting, kneeling shooting rifle, kneeling shooting bazooka, butting with rifle, throwing grenade, with grease gun at waist, walking with slung rifle, walking with walkie talkie, advancing with rifle at waist and advancing rifle x chest.

I received MPC tanks with both aluminum tubing and wooden barrels that were painted with silver paint to simulate metal. If I remember right, I only figured out they were made of wood when my little brother, who was about 18 months at the time, snapped the barrel of the “Weasel” in two.

I got a light blue weasel with a set that contained the little 45mm infantry cast in the same light blue along with the MPC Guided Missle Destroyer. In my mind that destroyer was one of the neatest things MPC ever made. I saw some recasts for sale a little while back – I hope to pick one up one day for sentimental reasons.

Someone gave me one of the Fighting men molds. Previously someone else had tried to pour lead into the mold and plugged it up. I could probably carefully remove the lead and the mold would be serviceable again. I guess with the internal wire the plastic-goop figures are gumby-like. In solid plastic the Fighting men would not be bendable nor very interesting poses?

  5. Jack Gibbons says:

I remember a friend who had the Creepy Crawler molds. I think they became very hot after the liquid rubber/plastic was poured into the mold and plugged it into the wall. As a grandson of a fireman I figured this toy was actually dangerous. I remember the GI molds and having no interest in buying them.

  6. Mark T. says:

The Fighting Men mold set was a little before my time, but I did get one of those guys in a mixed junk bag of toy soldiers at a second hand store when I was a kid. I never knew where he came from until now. As I recall, the wires were poking out through the ends of his hands and I had to trim them off with my Dad’s wire cutters. I usually used him as a corpse. There wasn’t much else you could do with him.

I WAS old enough to desperately want the Mattel Western World mold set, but I never got it. I have never seen the figures from that set except on the box art. If anyone has some Mattel Western World homemade figures I would love to see pics.

  7. TDBarnecut says:

Hey those Western World molds are pretty neat, never seen them before. I bet I could adapt them to work in my plastic injection machine. This lot seems to be incomplete with many molds missing.

    • TDBarnecut says:

Mark, the molds were inexpensive so I ordered them. I’ll see if I can make some plastic figures for you. They look like the figures are smaller than 1/32 scale but we’ll soon find out.

      • ERWIN F SELL says:

No the figures are actually a bit taller than 54mm and molds are abundant as ants in ebay.same as other molds too.
Mold halves are not quite well done do exess will show a lot in figures

        Best

Thanks for posting the link Erwin! If I can manage to create some actual figures from the molds I will send some pictures to Stad for posting.

Your welcome ,hope it works for you good .You have great ideas.
            best…

          • Mark T. says:

I hope it works out! I would love to see what those figures actually look like. I recall the Indians having Mohawk hair(I guess actually Pawnee hair since they were in the wild west.) but I don’t recall too much else and the online pics of the box are very small. I’ve often wondered if lots of the Western World figures ever turn up on eBay. Never saw any myself.

          • ERWIN F SELL says:

I got two indians that looks are from it and are from a junk lot o many years ago at Brooklin garage sale as one mold partial halve was included with it but was a cowboys mold .So not idea .i need look ax then and take picks.I had seen already done samples in ebay with some ecessex flashes .What i understand as these are toy molds not actual real mold they are to make fun not quite impressive detail figures as if in a regular mold.
I bet TD Barnecut could fix any issues with it .
            best
