Hong Kong Tarzan

Hong Kong Tarzan

Hong Kong Tarzan our very good friend Markus Leckscheid from Germany has sent us one of the many examples of the Hong Kong Tarzan on a blister card.  This card Markus feels  the card was issued in 70’s as it price 2.95 is in German marks. (The price would be about $1.50 at that time.)

Hong Kong Tarzan a Close Look

Hong Kong Tarzan

Now We take a closer look and see some familiar items and a few interesting new items. first we have the Hong Kong of the Lone Star Tarzan. This version we find Tarzan with blond hair and darker flesh than one I showed in Plastic Figure Showcase April.  The set has the standard African Native with shield and spear. Two  items you normally do not see is the chimpanzee and the boy. The boy is a copy of the Lone Star Indian boy. was this figure to represent  boy or Jai from television show. The chimpanzee no doubt was to be Cheetah. Markus  found funny of the right arm position of the  chimpanzee. It looks like a Nazi salute. If this toy had been reviewed the authorities, it could have been rejected  because of the strong anti Nazi laws enforced at the time.

The card shows a nice action scene of Tarzan. The set is called Jungle Set with no mention of Tarzan. This was done to save money by avoiding the licensing fees.  Interesting the card is in English so it was sold in other countries. If it had been a  blister card only for Germany it should have been titled DschungelSet. It would be interesting  to  see what other countries sold this interesting card.

The Jungle Set card is one of many examples of the great rack toys that was offered over the years.  We hope to have more examples to show you in the future.

Update

We received this from our very good friend Paul Morehead the editor of Plastic Warrior magazine on the Lone Star Tarzan.

The carded set based on the Lone Star carded set, of which I have only ever seen one example. We ran a photo of it on the cover of PW issue 118. I can tell you why the chimpanzee has that arm position. I have seen the Lone Star master figures and the original idea was for Tarzan and the chimp to hold hands, if you posed them right.

    Very interesting Markus !!
Funny about monkey!!.If the monkey is sold again, still could bring issues I guess.
Curios choose of boy figure using Indian ,I miss that complete, good catch Admi.I was trying to figured out before read and could not come to it at all.
This LS version HK is complete differed of one I have that was painted exact as original, hard to distinguish from original unless you feel the figure in hand and turn it upside down.

Markus, did Hong Kong sets sold exclusively for Germany were in German wording pack!?.
I got few of them in Spanish x those distributed x south/central America and Caribbean as well Spain. I often laugh in the errors in translation with rare odd names given.
Jungle set or playset was name used too by large Tarzan playset Blue Box that I have and later HK copied ,with original human figures and most same animal copies from Britain, timpo or others as above blister card set plus the nice big great two floors plastic Tarzan tree house.
I can provide pictures of it as well if wish.

What Tarzan do with no Jane? How Tarzan get Boy with no Jane? Hmmm…..Tarzan should know about birds and bees.
And for the monkey: Heil und Gruess mein Affen Freund!

  3. Markus says:

At least Pech Hermanos of Spain and Dulcop plus later kinder egg of Italy did some attractive Jane characters.
Think the Hong Kong copycats of the 60s simply had no option for Jane from english makers. There would have been only QE 1 from Charbens, the female Timpo police officer or several farmers wives. Maybe QE 1 would have been best option for Jane before she came ashore.
Domplast/Manurba, only German “Tarzan Maker” I know also ignored Jane.

Markus ,BB from Hong Kong did original Jane in two poses with Tarzan in two poses too,one boy pose only.I had try match poses w many others and not match.I have them with the original playset and later unbranded copies.
RES from Italy most be the one kinderr you reffering I guess.
Two other Spaniards obscure companies did her too.
I think also because not all books and movie had her, toys makers put her in sets.

I think the monkey’s hand was posed extended up to hold hands with Tarzan. I saw this set somewhere out of the packaging and that is how they were set up. The hand fits into Tarzan’s lowered left hand. It was a perfect fit. Besides … Chimpanzees are too smart to be Nazis!

      Brian.
I had seen the monkey ape(as chimpanzee are not monkeys theatrically least) walking hand with hand with Tarzan from Dulcop pose definitely and had is open in reverse way to grab Tarzan left hand ,this one is from another British maker I think ZOO set waving to expectation or else.

Barcelona Universal Models (BUM-not a good English acronym) did two different Tarzan sets a while back. Number 3000 – Tarzan King of the Apples (yes it actually says that on the box. I think it was supposed to be Apes) has two different Tarzans, One pose is swinging on a vine, it comes with a tree with a vine hanging down for him to swing on. The other Tarzan pose is walking with right arm down. There is a Cheetah pose with left arm up to complete the hand holding duo. There also is a fictional Great/Grey Ape walking with a walking stick ( straight out of Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. Tarzan’s fictional ape family that raised him.) To complete the set there are four animals in a nice grey plastic, a leopard, a baboon, a pronghorn antelope, and a cobra (not African)

Number 3001 – Tarzan King of Animals. Has two additional Tarzans, One with a knife and one giving the famous Tarzan yell. There is a “boy” pose also yelling, a palm tree a nice elephant, and as one seller described her a “really hot Jane”.

The figures are well sculpted, 1/32 in scale, good plastic, and do fit well with the Marx jungle sets. Here is link to a picture from Kent’s web site. http://www.angelfire.com/biz/toysoldierhq/Spanish.html

The name(title of set) was to avoid license writing books copy rights. BUM sets are base in Pech Hermnaos Spaniard company original molds they bought together with Oliver after 1974 when PH sold all left over mold and went out business
    Rest mold disappear.
BUM name stand for BARCELONA UNIVERSAL MODELS s.a. from Spain
BUM produced two post WW2 Franco era marching band sets base in PH molds and many HO kits scale of the later PH selection too molds and other minor Spaniards makers. They are still active.
They(BUM) from PH also got the Italian army artillery WW2 sets and MG crew sets too.(They were label wrong as American artillery set) the cannon add was not original but done by other Spanish company and place together in same box repack configuration BUM did.Russian/Soviets and American were not recast ,neither German,Japanese and English /Australian artillery and LARGE 12 POSES infantry sets of each mentioned army.
Because jecasan did WW2 sets, some often confuse Pech hermanos poses with Jecsan,PECH HERMANOS was by far better in detail and molds than Jecsan.

OLIVER reworked the molds and add rare bases different to the original PH molds made ,they only reissue the FFL, Indians and cowboys from late 80′, plus one wagon. I think only the FFL was ever sold and still does here in US in reissue set from Oliver.
Oliver do not produce any more toys and scrap the molds in 2009!?
I’m not positive in scale of BUM sets Tarzan, but base in PH original they are quite tall, Tarzan been around 70 mm ,I do not think he matches well with MARX ,but I could be complete wrong on this part. Sorry.

  10. erwin says:

Forgot mention as BUM took over few PH molds, the Tarzan set suppose to have 8 poses Africans (different from other sets(Solomon mines) poses sets, they never were reissues. It also have 4 poses of hunters used for KSM sets as well.
Same in Saracen that were 8 foot poses and 4 mounted too in original mold.
Spaniards mold makers produced most figures mold in individual mold pose halve in Bronze ,this cause the lost of many sets to be complete when taking over by other factory. That is what happen to BUM

In Finland I got this Tarzan play set as a Christmas present in early 1970’s. Tarzan’s loin cloth was red, the base was green. Tarzan got a separate knife, bow and vine with arrows included. The monkey was the same. Plus a couple of other animals. The tree had green detachable movable palm like branches/leaves. Wish I could still find the same set from some where. Any help somebody?
