Pvblivs Battle of Berlin

Our friend Denitz from Russia  has sent me photos of the new Pvblivs figure set. Soviet infantry Battle of Berlin. The Pvblivs Battle of Berlin is a six figure set plus piece of destroyed building. The Battle of Berlin was last major offense in overthrowing the Nazi Regime. The battle raged from April 15 to the end of the war. The Russian had two army groups which consisted of ‘The three Soviet fronts had altogether 2.5 million men (including 78,556 soldiers of the 1st Polish Army), 6,250 tanks, 7,500 aircraft, 41,600 artillery pieces and mortars, 3,255 truck-mounted Katyusha rocket launchers (nicknamed ‘Stalin’s Pipe Organs’), and 95,383 motor vehicles, many manufactured in the US.”

The Germans had remnants of various unit plus Hitler Youth and Volkssturm which was made up of 40,000 men too old for normal service.  The battles ranged on which much of the fighting house to house.  The lost on both sides were very high.

Good stuff but could somebody tell “Publius” they need to do some German/Finnish sets as well!

    • Erwin says:

      May be!
I bet they will increase the price a bit if mounted in ski and add an snow man! 🙂
      So be ready for!!!

    • Les White says:

I read somewhere, possibly ‘The Miniatures Page’ web forum ,that it is illegal to make or sell figures related to the Nazi German regime in Russia. If this info is correct they will not be making the opposing forces any time soon !
Perhaps someone could clarify this legal position which may be recent, as I think that some of the previous Russian made 1/72 scale plastics have WW2 Germans in their range.

      • erwin says:

As far I know the illegal sale part when is stablished in any country regarding toys or else is when the item/toy in particular clearly display insignia/symbols, emblems, uniforms (full or partial), flags, etc., clearly associated with the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP, commonly known as the Nazi Party). There are legal exceptions for works of Art (including books, films, Theatre Performances, computer games…
So unless they do some Nazi political soldier with clearly depicting it ,banners or else I do not think will be any issues at all.
The countries with stronger laws on this are Germany and Austria. In both till now Elastolin 70 mm soldiers are made and sold ,included the more than 38 poses WW2 German poses in action, mounted and band. Only change is that standard/banners had slight been change to carry (non Nazi Ensign ) and carry generic HERR or else made up symbols.
During Soviet era many Soviet made 1.35 kits with German soldiers were made, armor too and the armor even bring the swastikas on it. As far I see till other day they still do as well with new Kits produced in Russia, Ukraine, and other former Soviets parts. In metal there plenty Russian made germans toy soldiers done ,included Nazi characters figures doing the Nazi salute .

    • Don hanke says:

      Always wanting more eh

  2. Mark says:

    Very Nice !

  3. Erwin says:

Well.Something to add more, but too summer dressed in my opinion. Many poses have strong resemblances to past sets done
According to pictures and many recreated post battle scenes that were filmed by soviet propaganda after battle show soldiers w raincoats, coats and else.A wounded soldiers trying place the banner on top will be more dramatic apropitated x this battle.
Are they made of crystal plastic again?
Those the building ruin piece cost $5.00 ??? 🙂

    • denitz says:

It’s my fault. Publius said me “Wall cost lot of money” (means production cost), but I understood what retail price increased.

But later Publius explained me what keep retail price at same level as Samurai, Stalingrad etc.

      So correct price is $49.99

  4. I agree the poses are very similier to others already on the market. Would not be a problem but at $10 a figure I think I’ll pass on these.
    Gary

    • Don Perkins says:

Gary! You’re back! Have you received your Stengel Vietnam figures ordered at OTSN yet? I haven’t, but I’m getting ready to give John Jr. a call just to inquire.

    • Erwin says:

Ups..that is right .Almost $10.00 w out shipping .Included the mini wall!!
      WOW!!!
I can get elastolin painted at much better price!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

      • Don Perkins says:

Yeah, I know these are “gourmet” figures, but really.

        • Wayne W says:

I wouldn’t have so much a problem with similar poses (minor variations of the same pose can aid in realism IMO); but once again, I’m put back by the price. I was able to get a swallowable price finally for the Soviet females and commandos. I can wait and see if I can get these later – or not. I think I’ve managed to come to a place in my collecting where I no longer have to be the first kid on the block to get something. I think I learned that in Sparta?

          • Erwin says:

Wayne.I agree w you in value
I use same way.But these are limited run and they abuse the fact increasing prices.
EB are more aceptable per amount figures and poses plus material. And they last longer in market.Wile PLV last less and way out in value.

  5. ed borris says:

The Layfette show should be interesting , Stengel is supposed to be there. I haven’t got my 2 sets yet. Anyone see his ad in Playset Magazine?

  6. Erwin says:

NY .Stengel promoted Adria shows has been move to June.

  7. erwin says:

In my opinion this set is a waste of poses.
Considering price ,limited production ,so few poses per set and fact the competitor EB company making WW2 sets often ,they should had carefully choose better poses option. On top of 4 carrying exact same weapon and one looks almost like Airfix pose with out helmet and a PPS42/43 instead of a PPSh41
So far here is what I see.
The woman signaling had been represented in almost identical pose and hand in same way plus :skirt and same uniforms boot with even same carbine hanging in same exact way from back.-here is EB set pose from eBay link to make it easy.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Engineer-Bassevich-RED-ARMY-Scouts-Military-Women-1-32-plastic-soldiers-/262283269046?hash=item3d114d13b6:g:ESkAAOSwpDdVarxN

The pose firing the DP (light machine gun from waist ) was already done by same company in set (Brest) just that it was with a hat instead of helmet, and in exact summer uniform too.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Russian-infantry-Defense-of-Brest-fortress-WWII-plastic-soldiers1-32-/262325377719?hash=item3d13cf9ab7:g:TS0AAOSw585WUa6v.

Of course not to add that most Pvblivs are taken from already cast designed metal figures on sale around .Sample the girl is been on sale x quite some time .
here is the metal pose link and by the way much cheaper painted.

Still waiting on the Vietnam sets from the Columbus, Ohio Show back in October. After seeing the ad in the current Playset Magazine enquiring minds want to know…

  9. Christian Aldo says:

    TOY SOLDIER DRUGS!
    I LOVE IT!
I hope they continue with WWII, they have the best sculpture since MARX Japanese and US marines (Guy carrying guy set)
    So kenetic!!!!!!!
The BEST sculpture in the biz!!! Hands down!
If I ever get rich, I swear!
I will hire this great artist to sculpt for The Plastic General for top dollar!
    I’m a fan, like a rock band!
Soviet Assault Engeneers in Body Armour!
Pvblivs n- Beatles Eng Bass- Stones!!!
    Just my drunken opinion!

  10. In regards to Stengals figures a big NO. I’ll say it again. In no way do I think he took our money with intentions of not delivering his product. But what pisses me off to no end is the fact he flat out lied. He told me back in November “I will ship your sets tomorrow”
Sure hope someone catches up to him at one of these shows and see what he says.

  11. Ed Borris says:

I hear he was scheduled to go to Lafayette, so I should run into him sometime. I’m sure he’ll deliver at some point, maybe at the show. I trust the Stengels, I count Sr as a friend. It’s unfortunate that Jr. he didn’t deliver as promised, but that will hurt them more than me.Others aren’t quite as forgiving as I am.

  12. Wayne W says:

I hope things turn out okay for John Jr. I’ve dealt with John Sr back in the days of telephone and always liked him; got to talk to John Jr in Texas at his table last year and liked him. It would be a shame for a great reputation in this hobby to suffer needlessly.

I can understand Gary’s frustration. Hope you all can get it straight.

  13. Ed Borris says:

Good old Conte and his Spartans, sending you e-mails telling you can buy them at some alleged discount price per card and selling them on E-bay at the same time, if I remember correctly for less per card too. I guess I would have been really PO’d if I was a dealer that carried them. I think that is one thing I love about this hobby, the colorful characters that inhabit it.

    • Wayne W says:

I never have met Rick personally, but had several great talks with him on the phone when I called to order or inquire and got him. Always enjoyed our conversations and hearing his dreams. Really don’t hold the Spartans against him too much in spite of my mentions of it – actually was a good lesson.

And they are pretty – even if they grossly outnumber the Ex Force Persians I’ve been able to martial against them – at least for now – if they keep falling apart… Live and Learn.

  14. bill nevins says:

The prices on these new production figures are insane.
I don’t understand why anyone would pay them, but that’s what makes the world go round.

    • Len Hardt says:

Agree! I know the debate about prices has been beaten to death. If I paid 50+ dollars for a handful of figures I’d have to justify my purchase too with some kind of rationale, such as production expenses, small group of hobbyists, “gotta support da hobby,” so on and so forth. I think we’ve reached another milestone in the hobby – if you want new quality figures, EXPECT to pay these prices. That’s why I’m out. True, I’m a dinosaur – my 1960’s simple plastic toy soldier mindset does not compute this “new wave.” Yes, I LOVE the sculpting, and I love looking at the photos, but I’m now an outsider. That’s okay, just remember that our hobby has created yet another “political party.”

It reminds me of the old days when there was a straight, definitive line between original and recasts. Today, that line is somewhat blurred, but when recasts were 25 – 50 cents apiece, and an original Marx figure was 3 – 5 dollars apiece, you had two groups that just thought differently. Sometimes they “thought” rather loudly.

I think these prices are here to stay. Refusing to buy them won’t bring the price down – there just won’t be any more figures of this kind produced. There’s still plenty of good stuff out there, reasonably priced I might add. But as much as I admire this new wave of Russian figures, and as much as my adrenaline surges when I hear “only a few sets left!,” I won’t be buying them.

  15. Andy says:

If I go out to dinner for two, it’s easily $50 which is soon gone and forgotten.
If I buy great figures for $50, I enjoy them for a long time.
Would always love to get them cheaper, but glad the option is there.
As far as some of the junk that comes in buckets for $10, not for me.

    • Len Hardt says:

Thus the two “political party” mindsets. The debate will never end. Agree, it IS indeed great to have the option.

      • admin says:

        Len
I agree with you there are two mind sets here. It boils down to the person to decide whether they want to pay $50.00 or not. If they want to pay $50.00 then fine. If they do not want to buy fine. Pvblivs feels it can get away with these prices so I do not see any reduction in the price.
Stad’s policy will be to make you aware of this new product.

        • Len Hardt says:

And we are very thankful for that! We all enjoy being informed while at the same time being wowed by the beautiful figures . . . regardless of what party we belong to.

    • Christian Aldo says:

      I’m with you 100%
A night out with some chick at a lounge, 6 glasses of wine $60.
I’ll take the soldiers, I can’t waste them away.

  16. Erwin says:

Is no only price.is the amount and “quality”
    of brittle plastic x $50.00 + shipping.
The price is made up.Not cost production will justify it unless every figure is 3 D and of course are not.
EB do more figures per set in limited production x less with much better plastic.
PLV in my opinion is trying make a fame brand x it self. The artist/sculpture is not even theirs.
Most are cloned from metal cast figures done already by other artist.
I choose the party of NOT with the option of
    $50.00 x two dinners x two.:-) 🙂 🙂

  17. ed borris says:

Yeah it’s your money spend it the way you want, you earned it. I’ve spent that much on a single figure, more in fact.

I don’t do WWII so it’s an easy choice for me, glad they don’t do Alamo figures.

  18. Daniel Murphy says:

I agree with everything that everyone has said about spending your money any way that you want. Pvblivs is too expensive for me, but what more decisively distances me from their product is the brittle plastic. The figures are beautifully sculpted. Given the nature of the plastic, they really are display pieces – like the metal figures they are modeled on. For me plastic soldiers are toys. I want to be able to set them up on the floor, let my kids handle them, toss them into a box – though I’m rarely able, I want to play with them. So I will stick with cheaper plastic soldiers that I can guiltlessly knock around!

    • Christian Aldo says:

      The PVBLIVS plastic is SOFT!!!!!!
      I know, I buy them!
If you want to play with kids on the floor, buy junk from the dollar store!

  19. Wayne W says:

To each his own; while I would LOVE to have some, I just can’t see paying the price so will forego. For those who are willing and able – well, that’s what the free market is all about.

As for me, if I have to go the rest of my life without buying another figure, it will be sad, but it’s not like I don’t have literally tens of thousands of toy soldiers in my containers and I’m running out of storage anyway so… But like Rockerfeller once said when someone asked him how much money was enough. “Just a little more…”

    Like that with soldiers.

Paul, thanks for sharing the pix; it’s great to know what’s out there, even if we pass.

  20. Jack Gibbons says:

Keep in mind where these figures are made – Russia and/or the Federation. The Ruble has been hammered by the US dollar over the past few years. In addition, we probably still have some sanctions on the Russians over the Ukraine. Russia is probably in a recession due to the decline of oil revenues. We also do not do a great deal of business with the Russians. And, maybe they have tough local rules or taxes on products. Even the shipping costs are high on Ebay.

I think these high prices are merely the manufacturers “learning” where the market prices will need to be before the sets can become more commercially viable in the future.

  21. bill nevins says:

Jack, I don’t care if they make them on Mars. P.T. Barnum was right.

    • TDBarnecut says:

The figures are nice looking, but that is about all they have going for them. I seriously would do a Louis Marx reality check; The original purpose of making figures out of plastic was that they could be mass produced very cheaply. These figures seem to be the exact opposite. Again, the sculpting is terrific, but as Erwin points out the designs are not very original and this makes them even less desirable. You may rationalize the cost if you want them badly enough, but I would join the group that concludes that I have better things to spend the money on.

  22. Erwin says:

PLV had those prices since start in 2013 and going up after. They got the main set x it.
They know the market well. They sale most to Europe.
I notice after TSSD tryied once sale the EB SETS before here ,they stop carrying. No margin x profit, neither big sale=few buyers
I think Steve Weston from UK have some ,most EB not PLV too.
They are few made x limited buyers. That is why they try x that price.
I starting like first ,then find the material issue and compate with EB decide not right
I have the money to.spend x set,but feel not right spend and help create an stigma that could become soon be a bad example x future producers and what they could charge to most thinking (if they sale x 50+,I can do mine x same or more).
    I see that coming!!

  23. bill nevins says:

Just as a point of reference, I bought my first boxed playset for $30.00. I bought it from the famous Ed B. at the Marx Meet back in 1980. It was complete Fort Apache, the common yellow box, and Ed wanted $ 40 for it and we settled on $ 30.

I still recall the unsettled feeling of paying 30 bucks for a TOY. I think as a rookie cop, I was making 12,000 a year back then. I remember letting my Brother in Law drive home, so that I could marvel at my new found treasure.

I guess that it’s all how you look at it. If those figures make you happy and give you that same feeling that I had so many years ago, then go for it.

    • Wayne W says:

“I guess that it’s all how you look at it. If those figures make you happy and give you that same feeling that I had so many years ago, then go for it.” And there it is.

I guess a bargain or a “buy” is in the eyes of the beholder.

  24. ed borris says:

Must be another Ed B, it wasn’t me.

  25. Andy says:

I think we CAN all agree that we won’t be using undamaged $50 per set figures for conversions…… 🙁

    • Christian Aldo says:

I always buy three sets of every new WWII, PVBLIVS and ENG BASS.
I use the figures I need, the rest become conversions.

  26. erwin says:

I just got word of new PUBLIUS or Pvblivs set as been 6 Indian (north American natives ) very alike Sioux or same tribes around war of 1876.Again to match TSSD and paragon scale 60mm aprox,4 in nice action poses, one brave and one wizard or elder ..
Will get pictures later to admin …
