York Toy show 2015

On Sunday November 30th, Laurie and I did our last major Toy show of the year, the York Toy Show in York Pennsylvania. The drive to the show is on highway all the way.  We arrived at the show 15 minutes before it opened and got into the long line. Once the doors opened, the line quickly entered the building.

The show has two big halls and we will usually do the hall to the left. The show has plethora of stands with all kind of material ranging from action figures to toy soldiers.  Each table was a surprise in what they had for sale. One dealer had Kinder Egg figures another dealer had Snoopy items. Many of the tables had car toys on their table as this show started as just automobile toys and morphed into all kinds of toys.

I did not find much over this room, only a few Winnie the Pooh sitters and few Hong Kong made soldiers. I passed a large lot of loose Atlantic  and other makers 1/72 scale figures.  We also saw at Kerr’s table a boxed Renwal Caisson and cannon with the box. This set is huge, I have only seen about two or three sets complete. One was in UK with figures in different colors.  With Kerr was a collector from Lancaster  Troy Gettle, who we had not seen in a long time.

We headed over to the other hall, where we  first saw Harry Davis. Harry had playsets and a nice diorama of the civil war. Harry also had on display the Innovations Bicentennial Revolutionary War swoppets with a Fort Liberty. We next  stopped at the stands of our very good friends Chris Lamont and Gerry Watts. Chris was selling various action figures and Legos, Gerry had figures and various toys for sell. They both were busy.  We saw some other friends which made the day worthwhile.

The show was interesting there was a lot of people, but we did not see many people carrying packages. The stock of many of the dealers was not up to the high standards of previous shows.  The stock looked old and tired.  At one stand I saw a dealer  had a Nardi stagecoach in the box, which he had at last years show.

As to our purchases, we found a few items for resale and the collection. Laurie got a nice dinosaur bank, while I found some Starlux cowboys and Jescan skin diver. The figure is missing his face mask, but has two air tanks. The figure had been placed into a bag of Ideal skin diver reissues. I mention to the dealer that I was only interested in  the skin diver.  The dealer was surprised and annoyed to see it there as it should have been in another section by itself.

After the show we stopped at Bob Evans a chain restaurant. We used to have one in our area, but it closed. So stopping at Bob Evans was a treat.

Good report, Paul. When my wife goes with me to Indy, we always stop at the Bob Evans in Lima, Ohio, either on the way down, or on the way back up, sometimes both. And now that you’ve completed your “last major show of the year”, you can start preparing for your “first major show of the [new] year”. Keep up the show reports. It’s almost the only thing that keeps me going till Indy in April.

Bob Evans is enjoyable treat. We got their special which included salad, main course of country fried steak with mashed potatoes and desert for $9.99. It is one of the few chain restaurants we enjoy.
Right now I have one more toy show which is on the 13th. It is a small show, but it is close to home. I might find a few items and see some friends. I am not sure what will be my first show next year as the one I had planned for January has not listed a date.

I was surprised to see it too. I have gotten some interesting figures at York. One year I found a knight from small Germany company. It is why I like to do shows.

Shows are funny, you never know what you will find. That’s why we keep going, you never know when you will run into that Johnny Ringo figure hidden in among the Chinese knock offs. or some other hidden gem. Sometimes they are just small victories, but a victory is a victory and that’s what keeps searching. Reminds me of golf in some respects, no matter how bad of a golfer you are, everyone manages to hit at least one terrific shot during a round, and the feeling of that shot keeps you coming back to try again.
