He refused to sign as the person had been dead since 1920.

Greg Liska Update

civil War wants
We heard from Greg Liska. He wrote the following.
I am stuck in Saudi Arabia!  I have 8 hours of movement time if I stay in Riyadh. The rest is lockdown or be fined the equivalent of $3,000.00. It’s getting ready to clamp down to 24X7 lockdown again on 23 May. I have no idea when I’ll get out of here. As of 9 May, Kuwait is in total lockdown again, too. For me to get home, I need both countries open and running international flights and the US being willing to accept a flight in from Kuwait. If all the pieces come together, I’m sure there will be at least one 2 week quarantine in there.
25mm figures
Anyhow, I’ve been on Ebay a lot, for obvious reasons.  I discovered that the Hing Fat/ Billy V Federals / Union / Yankees were at least partially copies of Imex ACW figures. They seem to be pantographs up from the 25mm figures, explaining the somewhat cartoonish scaling and details.  I wonder if the Confederates/ Rebels were copies from some figure set or another.  I’d like to know and was wondering if anyone could tell me. I’ve attached pics.
More figures

Lastly, the search to acquire more of the unidentified ‘oddball’ ACW figures is nearly complete. I am certain I have all the poses. I want to get a second (or more of the 2 poses circled. Please help me hunt this down!

In my boredom, I tracked down the Confederates. Seems they are copies of Italeri. Now, I wonder about the mounted poses. The Hing Fat Confederates are mounted riflemen. The Federals are decent, if a little small. The officer with binos is rather unique.

Hey Paul. Hi Greg. Well, you found the “drug-store” version of BMC/Americana ACW figures. Ever since I saw them on Paul’s site, I’ve wanted to get a few also. You found them in Saudi Arabia? I’ve written to Paul and Irwin, trying to get a lead on them. The 2 prone figures are the poses I’d really like to acquire, but the other ones would be good too. If anyone knows how to find them, I’d appreciate a shout-out. I’ve converted lots of the standard BMC poses, swapping heads, weapons, and arms/legs to get better, more unique poses. About the Billy V figures…some of the Union poses can convert into pretty good poses, but the Confederates, not so much. Made a few prone casualties from the crawling poses. Greg, hope you can get home soon. Everybody should stay inside til June. We only go around once, don’t take the “I want it now” view. If not for us, then for our families. Thanks.

      Carl –
No, I found several lots scanning Ebay while stuck here. I am 95% sure I have all the poses. They are not all shown because I can’t take pics of them. I had sent Paul a pic from an Ebay lot taken by the seller. It’s not shown here. I was the person who introduced the topic on Paul’s site and I’ve been hunting these guys ever since.
There is no ‘wanting it now’ here. There’s no choice. This is not the US where clowns can break the law, screaming they know their rights, get a lawyer in on it and end up with a cash settlement. You get caught outside, you get arrested, you get fined and you may get jail. You could get an ass-beating, too. A lot of moving parts will need to come together for me to get home. It’s not likely to happen until late July if then.

Only in America can imbeciles run loose, spreading the virus.
I’m just hoping they don’t make it so bad that it can’t be contained.
Morons still crowding into bars and beaches. If they want to be together so badly, lock them up together and don’t let them out.

Confederates copied from ESCI 1/72 set

  4. Billy V is an Imex brand.

  5. Greg Liska says:

I’m not seeing any of the 4 mounted Hing Fat ACW poses. Can somebody clarify what they are copies of? Send a pic or a link?

  6. Carl Castoro says:

Greg, I agree with you about screaming Americans. Every State has isolation violations. The armed gathering in Michigan is particularly alarming. I for one, will applaud your return home. In reference to the unknown ACW 54mm figures, similar to BMC, can I ask what they are called? They’re not BMC. Haven’t found anything under typical ACW searches. Your finding them repeatedly on eBay is a hopeful sign. Perhaps there are some I can purchase? Just have to enter correct description. Appreciate your help. Again, sorry circumstances have you away from home. Would this be your last deployment? All the Best to you. Carl

    • Greg Liska says:

Carl – It shall be my LAST deployment. This was supposed to be a cake and ice cream tour, but it didn’t turn out that way. At least nobody is actively trying to kill me.
I have no idea of any brand name or even if there was one on the header card. The new BMC inspired ACW figures in Hobby Lobby have no brand name whatsoever on their header card, so it may be that there was no name on their header card either.
Erwin saw them at Rite-Aid, I had seen them in the gift shop of the either Pickett’s Mill or Kennesaw Mtn. Battlefields. Can’t remember which. All 3 bags that I’d gotten had the header card missing; one from a friend who had no use for them and 2 off of Ebay. In one case the bag had a cannon and a gattling gun with the carriages cast in grey, wheels and gun cast in a flat, fleshy tan.
I believe they didn’t stay on the shelves long because the Federals are cast in unstable, possibly toxic, plastic. The blue color comes off on your fingers. The white vinyl horses that come with the figures are always smudged with blue coloring coming off of the Yankees.
I’ve got as many of the poses as I want, except for the 2 guys circled. I have only one each of them. I would trade out to get at least one more of each.

  7. Daniel Murphy says:

What drug stores were selling the unknown Civil War soldiers? Was it a chain, or were the figures popping up in independent stores?

    • Carl Castoro says:

Hi Dan. From the info I gathered here, they were sold thru Rite-Aid drug stores, and Erwin says they were carried in other thrift stores, maybe Dollar stores. Greg mentioned he got several small lots of them. I just don’t know how to list them for my searches. I tried “ACW in plastic”. “BMC/Americana Clones”. “Chinese Copies of ACW plastic”. Well, I have nothing but time. Hopefully, a brand name will finally be found, and I can add them to my collection of “pig figures”, as a very elite member of the group calls them.

  8. Greg Liska says:

just for the academic drill and my own curiosity, has anybody identified what the Billy V / Hing Fat mounted ACW poses are copies of? It’s not Imex. I looked. Not even close.
