To me unbelievable is the insanity in my opinion to pay for just one color type of an item made so many times and so common because the “” rarity “” of those colors.I think is ridiculous and a big absurdity. So far I can see there several willing to paid that high…
    My thoughts.

    • TDBarnecut says:

The bids on the various ‘British’ tan items from this seller are odd in that they start low and then jump to super – high without much in-between bidding like you might regularly see, so it seems weird and fake.

  2. George Albany says:

If only I still had the purple and green armored car I had as a child, what would that bring on eBay? Just kidding, I never had a purple and green armored car. If I did, I bet the bids would go crazy on eBay. I don’t understand why people pay the prices they do, especially on eBay. For Heaven’s sake, they are TOYS!

    • ERWIN F SELL says:

I hope these are not same that says-(They can or will not pay 7-9.00 per figure today in new limited production)
I understand if any body else can not or don’t want paid x todays figures limited done new high prices but if then turn around and will pay these insane prices for these old small vintage toys pieces then they are very double face i think .
Imagine if a full playset will come out with these (“”rare””) colors for bid how much will end $50 000!!!??
      Insane world …
Now let me see if i find one in my garage sale around i may win a mini lottery !!!

Yes they are toys, but for some reason these people are willing to pay these high prices. It is crazy when you see these high prices. If you are the seller you are going thank you. I have had that with a few items over the years. Most times today it is a grind on Ebay.

  3. Mark T. says:

Even if I was a millionaire, I wouldn’t pay that kind of money for those items. Incredible! I wonder how they justify it to their wives?

  4. H. Paas says:

i like odd color items i just wish they weren’t so expensive i’m a fan of the test shot cherry red color i see used often i’m still waiting for my tim mee deuce and a half in red i saw one at the Chicago show last year but they wanted 300 dollars for it its sad because i’m even willing to spend 50 to a hundred for it just not 300 i even feel like that price is absurd but its not actually too bad considering its a one of a kind item generally i won’t even negotiate for something that absurd but i see both perspectives here perhaps you can’t justify this purchase but then again you’re not the one buying it at least we have somewhere where we can purchase one of a kind items but at the same time i do agree the lure of this hobby was cheapness for me let the metal toy soldier collectors squabble over prices

  5. OIF-Retread says:

i’ve got mixed feelings about this. like most of you, i think people spending those prices are nuts. but how many people think we’re nuts for spending what we do on 50 year old toys? i’d never spend money on wine collecting, or paintings, but i’ve probably spent way too much on recreating all those Fort Apache and Battleground playsets i had as a kid. if they’ve got the money to spend, to each his own.

  6. Gary Kuepfert says:

OK I wouldn’t pay those prices, you wouldn’t pay those prices, but someone else would. It’s their money not yours. Good for the seller. Should he reject the sale because you think it is unreasonable? Everyone is different and has their own priorities.

    • admin says:

The seller I am sure is very happy with what he will get for the items. I would be too. Yes there are people out there that will pay silly prices for items. It is just amazing .

  7. ERWIN F SELL says:

While we spend a lot more in a lot more stuff ,most will never get anywhere close to think spend just hundred or possible more in a single item just because the different color after seen and able get same in many other colors i guess .Even this color that may be considered (“rare”) are around ,least seen in show and never ever near those prices high where those bid had reach .That may me think either those bidding never look around or go to shows or even ebay other times or simple don’t care in wasting money and ar bidding for the sole purpose of the winning race.
In the other hand I had seen many of these(So call bids) end in not actually purchase and the so call bidders retract during ,before or at end bidding ..Ebay cannot force you to pay x any after you win and only you will receive a neutral or negative feedback after not paying if ebay and or seller could proof you did in purpose which would be very hard to proof.
So we will have to see and if win-get then ,hope they put in a safe after !!!
Again is great x sellers is absurde and insane x those bidding this high by now in my opinion of course
    my thoughts.

  8. Giovanni says:

There is no a real reason for doing so. These prices are completely out of business and genuinely gives rise to doubts.

  9. ERWIN F SELL says:

Question as I’m not a Marx fan neither ANY EXPERT AT ALL.
These tan shade-tone colors are the same used in the Marx Desert Fox battleground playset Vehicles accessories else!!??

  10. Don Perkins says:

I have to agree with the philosophy expressed by Gary Kaupert and OIF-Retread, as well as the points made by some others: I never paid for any toy soldier item even approaching the bid on the Marx tan landing craft, but if people in general had any idea how much I’ve spent on toy soldiers (both old and new), many would think I’m crazy.

Even if they knew what we pay for a box of ExForce or a bag of TSSD new production, they would think it’s an absolute silly waste. They may be right — Ha Ha Ha!

So the top bidder on the tan landing craft may very well be someone like the owners of CTS or Marx Museum or Rick Eber. They appreciate its rarity, they can afford it, and they want it.

  11. ed borris says:

I’ve bought small collections for the price of that landing craft. I guess people like what they like and if they have the money more power to them. Would I spend it on that landing craft? No, but that’s me and I don’t even do WWII.

  12. Don Perkins says:

Another thought on the subject occured to me: Many people would probably think that paying $128.00 per night to stay at the Schaumburg Hyatt-Regency just to walk the halls of 4th & 5th floor at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show is a little silly, but I usually do it for one night once a year every September. Some collectors do for 2 or 3 nights in a row, just to be in the middle of all the toy soldier action. So everything, as usual, is relative, and just depends on what you enjoy and what you can afford.

    • ed borris says:

I don’t think $128.00 for a hotel room is outrageous on a vacation and after all isn’t it really a vacation from reality where you can be 10 years old for a couple days? A small price to pay in my humble opinion.

  13. Clayton Boneli says:

It is not only with you Americans that there are “crazy” people willing to pay absurd prices. Here in Brazil we have a website similar to e-bay called “MercadoLivre”, it would be something like “free market” (translating). In this site are announced and sold figures from the 60s, 70s, 80s. The figures reach absurd prices and there are many madmen who pay, which causes the sellers to increase prices each time, because there are always people willing to pay.

Just to cite an example is a saleswoman who is offering a Fort Apache made of wood from the year 1968, for the price of US 3,217.00 In my view the world of collecting has the opportunists who only want to profit and not only import the collection, and these opportunists infest the market, putting prices ever higher because they know there are people who will pay.

These days I bought a very beautiful David Crockett (7cm plastic) very rare for $ 20.00, and incredibly 1 hour after I bought the figure, the same seller, who had a second David Crockett identical to mine, was asking for a new value of $ 100.00, I contacted him and asked him why he was wanting such a high value and he said that the two figures were exactly alike but that after he sold me he did a search and saw that other sellers had the same figure for a higher price, so what did he do? He raised the price, for no reason but greed.

Unfortunately for the market, the seller sold this second David Crockett almost immediately after he has increased the value to US100.00.

    • ERWIN F SELL says:

      Sad but true ,
I also buy often from mercado libre either Portuguese -spanish that is actually south american and central america with Mexico main site for sales as ebay Also i buy in Todocoleccion site from Spain/Portugal and same thing happen.
Is true ,just that Ebay has a huge more proportion and largest sales else but pretty much same thing .
Insane crazy few buyers give chance to greed opportunist sellers and create these inflation in prices as well that in my opinion are absurd and way off logic as these toys most from 50 till now are just barely “vintage” and not quite few but abundant ,yet they had become”” Antiquity”” price valued inflated in many cases in my opinion not quite plastic toy vintages or collectible value that should be less expensive .
I mean if you notice these Marx battleground items pup several times per month in ebay so they are not that rare ,neither extinction.
So i guess more guilty in the price increase goes by those(Buyers) who use the bid as A race and as consequence create a high mark value way above what may or should be the logic price accordingly giving opportunity to sellers and those wanting sale to go nuts too.

Not related, but a MIB Remco Big Caesar was recently on eBay for $25,000.00.

    • ed borris says:

I think I see a Remco Big Ceasar at about every other show. The price is is not quite that high though in fact they are usually fairly cheap.

  15. ERWIN F SELL says:

Yes that is same seller we had(Several collectors had post the link here before along with admin) in other post ;he has a basement with another two or three vintage playset x thousand ,i think he uses-list as a museum advertising as he never sold those. He often repeat the same list ,then disappear x few weeks and so on.LOL

  16. Peter Evans says:

This is quite common across lots of hobbies and interests. In the UK it revealed itself as figure collectors wanting each of the swoppet knight heraldic devices and stoles in each colour on each pose that wore them. Or colour variations in Timpo overmoulded figures , and so forth.
Prices began to reflect this need to acquire said items. Once these particular collectors had achieved their requirements demand slackened and prices lowered.
Particularly in this hobby any price given to an object is purely subjective due to the fact that it has no intrinsic value, only that which anyone is willing (and able) to pay for it
