Plastic Figure Round Up: Plastic Platoon, Crowd Funding, Schleich More are some of the items we will start this month off with. First  two sets are out from Plastic Platoon. Two Plastic Platoon set are ready for sale this week.  First one is the Vietcong Infantry.  This set has six different figures.

The other are the North Vietnamese Army also six poses. I would watch Ebay for dealers to start offering these figures.

I have received from Peter Evans the 2018 Schleich catalog and it disappointing.  All the knights have been  removed.  what remains are basically animals, dragon and dinosaurs. Schleich also continues their superhero line with two for Marvel.  We will have to see if Papo continues their knight other figures.

Mike Pendergast informed me the status  of crowdfunding project by Hat.  Hat is working  on doing crowdfunding to make 1/32 scale Seven Years War Austrians. Mike tells me that they are 60% toward their goal.  If you are interested you can go to the Hat site for more information.  Also you can go to Mike’s site  for more information as well.

You think with all the shows I have done over the years I have seen everything. The truth is I am still seeing new items. The helicopter was bought in a lot.  I thought that it was by Processed Plastic. Imagine my surprise to find it was by Gay Toys.  I have seen a number of Gay toy civilian items this was the first military item from this company.

The other item is the MPC DUKW.  I have not seen  this item before.   the figures with it are wrong.  Have you seen this item before?

  7. Don Perkins says:

Whoever Plastic Platoon uses as their sculptor has got to be one of the most creative, brilliant artists around. The poses he comes up with are totally original. They are completely different than the standard poses we toy soldier collectors are used to seeing. At the same time, the positions he designs them in are always very natural looking, with dynamic action.

The HAT Austrians also look very good. One thing that always made HAT exceptional was that for every army, HAT would release a set of action/firing poses, followed by a command set, and then followed by a set of marchers. It was an absolutely perfect way to allow collectors to build a realistic Napoleonic army. I’m hoping HAT’s resumption of it’s 1/32 scale sets works out for them. They really were excellent figures in a quality soft plastic at a very economical price.

    • TDBarnecut says:

Two completely different visions of “toy soldiers” and an interesting comparison between the styles. Dynamic action / battle poses vs stiff, virtually inert figures (ho-hum).

      • Wayne W says:

TD, I think you’re comparing apples to oranges. I would agree with you if the HaT set was depicting anything after the American Civil War. The 7YW was in a time when tactics were more formal. This is depicting a command set in a massed formation scenario. You might get more dynamic poses in a melee situation – but that was only after both armies maneuvered to close in with each other and many times one of the armies broke and fled before it came to that. Even in the American Revolution it was Washington’s ambition to prove to the world (Europe) that he could defeat the British in a set-piece battle such as these figures depict rather than a “hit-and-run” raid like Trenton, which is how Europe dismissed the important victories that Christmas.

Modern combat is more static and lends itself to more dynamic poses such as Plastic Platoon offers. There is no doubt PP represents a new standard of excellence in sculpting, but my own opinion is HaT does an excellent job of presenting the “musket era” of warfare at an affordable price.

For my own tastes, I love modern scenarios for their action but there’s something awesome about the sight of massive formations of troops marching in unison spread across the field in the beautiful uniforms of the day. I think both companies capture the feel of their conflicts quite well. But to each his own and I don’t think there is a wrong or right opinion on the matter. Just a matter of personal taste.

        • Wayne W says:

I hope I’m not coming off argumentative or anything negative, I re-read my post and sometimes the tone doesn’t read the way it was intended.

          • ERWIN SELL says:

I agree with the poses Hat facts Wayne.
I had mention same before repeatedly too and others blogs as well
The tactic and drills used from late XVI till mid /late XIX were specific as that.
Most forces implemented the march till close enough to face accuracy and range of muskets in march formation.
Even when close enough ,only the first two rows actually engage at firing with first row firing and second at ready while others back keep muskets/weapons at shoulder or against body. Even by US Civil war in fast march movement from one position to others soldiers run with it at shoulders.
So in reality unless you are making skirmish all battles require over two third with marching or musket/weapon in not forward or firing-ready position.
The kneeling poses being for certain line ,not column firing and for square formation as well for skirmish.
The poses with bayonets should be barely used or present in a column x only those of first row,it was very odd use entire column in with bayonet fix also as the one back will hurt the one at front once the front clash start.
The long bayonet in close formation act as spear with length of musket as spearhead of intimidation massive steel while those back will use the close shot firing in melee or just use the muskets. Maneuver with bayonets in close encounter will be very dangerous with others very near you of your same army and soldiers of the era where not expert in blade fighting at all.

So this should be take in consideration ,that even when a 4 rank deep line or in a column fast march with bayonets fix ,only two first lines/rows front had then fix ,not others who will carry musket at shoulder still while performing this action until they turn to replace front losses else.

HAT did this with every army period set they did before ,by doing a correct march sets and action loading- firing set right after plus many command sets.
The HAT figures today are made for wargamers and real battles large scale ideally intended and very historical accurate ,not made for children to play as we did when Marx and others lack the action poses in many sets. But ironic place many marching poses that in battle drills of the times represented were indeed correct.
Others makers such ACCURATE,AIP,BARZSO had made more skirmish typical action poses sets .
            My thoughts
            best

        • TDBarnecut says:

I’m not an expert on military tactics nor a war-gamer, so the static poses used for that purpose just seem boring to me. That’s all.

          • Don Perkins says:

TD, you don’t have to be an “expert” on “military tactics” to understand that before the 20th Century the Greeks, Romans, along with 17th Century pre and post Napoleonic armies tended to fight in uniform lines and formations. To a great extent, this was true even in our own American Civil War.

All you have to do is rent the DVD “Waterloo” starring Rod Steiger & Christopher Plummer, and you will quickly see what tactics these armies used. Or try the movies “Gettysburg” or “Troy” with Brad Pitt.

Their tactics were not “static” in any normal sense of the word. They all involved firing, loading, advancing with fixed bayonets, marching, wheeling, defending at the ready, etc. It’s just that the movement was uniform along the whole length of the line, to take advantage of the strength and power offered by a formation.

When recreating these eras of warfare, toy soldier manufacturers like HAT are creating the historically correct poses of these fighting formations. Having them all posed like individual Viet Cong jungle fighters in the latter part of the 20th Century would be ridiculous.

            Can’t you understand this? Geesh!

          • ERWIN SELL says:

I understand the point and i think is a personal like and view ,if not like stiff poses then maybe Barzso,AIP and others such new Petit guerrero brand figures are more in your like .
But definitely for skirmish scenarios not typical order battle of the time.
So both sides have a good point and personal choice in my opinion.
Is a matter of personal like flavor.
            my thoughts

Just giving an opinion about the figures.

  8. Christian Aldo says:

First big revolution was CONTE in 2000,
    now it’s PLASTIC PLATOON 2018!

  9. Christian Aldo says:

    What?! NO comments?!
I guess there is no revolution in plastic after all?!
    Sad.

  10. Jeremy Haupt says:

There’s definately a revolution in plastic not only in 1/32 and 54mm scale figures. There has also been a boom in 28mm plastics-not just historics-but also fantasy figures.

Plastic Platoon has made some amazing sets! I have picked up all of them and am looking forward to the VC and NVA.

My hope is that Mikhail doesn’t stop there. How about an all action all women Viet Cong set? Sappers maybe.

How about a LRRP set? Or a few LRRP sets? Mars has made some Vietnam war sets, but are lacking in detail in my opinion.

I want to paint the Plastic Platoon sets that I have and will send in some photos. Cheers!

  11. Tom Black says:

Plastic Platoon, EB, and PVBLIVS have up the ante. Not since Conte GI’s and Spartans have we got this quality.

  12. Those Plastic Platoon figures look great. If I collected that theme, I would definitely pick those up. And for the price of around $55.00 for 6 figures the sculpting better be that good.

I am glad that Hat is trying to make some more 1/32 figures again. Thank you Paul for mentioning this and the article on my page. I think the design of these figures looks great. Like others here have said, these poses fit the era. The details look really good on the figures. For about $15.00 for 18 figures, this is a steal these days. I purchased 10 boxes, I might even get some more. These figures could also be used as Hessian mercenaries for the British during the American Revolution too. I hope this project does get funded. The last few attempts crowdfunding have failed mainly because the lack of time and promoting from Hat Inc.

I like the 2 finds you made in the wild Paul. There is something new or different around the corner. Thanks again, Mike.
