Odds Ends Ugliest Troops Greg Liska

Odds Ends Ugliest Troops Greg Liska, we have Greg Liska’s latest project which he calls Ugliest Cavalry Troop. Next we have a new Russian company Alliance of the Free(Russia). Our very good friend Detlef Heerbrand shares an old Elastolin ad.

Odds Ends Ugliest Troops Greg Liska’s New Project

Odds Ends Ugliest Troops Greg Liska
I love the projects that Greg Liska comes up with. He takes figures that most people would relegate to a junk lot and turn them into something very interesting case in point is Rel Cavalry The Rel figures are the least detailed figures that were made in the United States. Here is what Greg is doing with them. Here is what Greg says about this project.

I had to do it. The Rel stuff mostly just piled up from various eBay lots. Then… I had a vision. A vision of the ugliest cavalry troop in the world.
rel cavalry
I plussed up some of the numbers and then over-did it with details (yeah, the ‘lipstick on a pig’ principle). I added butt packs, holsters, swords, and carbines
Confederate cavalry
The bugler has his instrument resting in the crook of his arm. The senior officers and color-bearers are Tootsie Toy. Most of the saddles are cut-up black leather I had laying around.
Overview of cavalry

Why in  h*** did I do this?  I had them ‘there’ (for the most part) and I liked the standard riding pose. I tried to mix them in with my Marx 60mm cavalry and it just didn’t work.

So, I just ‘went ugly’. They have their own troop, now.
I’m considering a dismounted cavalry troop for each. I have about 40 or so right now. I’ll take ideas for the confederates. Thanks for looking. I hope it didn’t affect your vision…they ARE ugly!  I can’t wait for his next project.

Alliance of the Free(Russia)

We have another new company from Russia. These are made by Alliance for Free(Russia). They have done a set of the five 1/32 figures called scumbags. They are limited run and cost $66.00. as we will get more information we will let you know.

Finally, we have from Detlef an advertisement for the Karl May figures. It is interesting to see these old ads.

Those Elastolin figures I have some in white or cream plastic made by Linde.

    • ERWIN SELL says:

LINDE are just copies of Elastolin but smaller than Elastolin made later .Other former west German brands as well former DDR copied or cloned Elastolin just in their scale of painted in case of DDR brands .

  2. Biff Smith says:

    That ad is really sharp!!

  3. Dan Harrick says:

Scumbags…..second from left looks like ‘leather face’ from Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. second from right looks like man morphing into Chewbaca. But fun looking figures that could be used in some type of civilian setting.

  4. Wayne W says:

I remember the first time I saw the Rel cavalrymen when I receive them with a bunch of figures I won on ebay. I had a hard time believing someone actually paid money for them by choice (LOL). From a distance the way you’ve set them up, they don’t look so bad.

  5. ERWIN SELL says:

I like what Greg could out of any.
To me all figures mounted in line with background looks great!
    Well done!

  6. Gary DiBello says:

Yes, I think Greg may have inadvertently elevated these long-scorned “Horse-Sojers” to a more romanticized place in collector’s hearts.
Who doesn’t love a tight military formation of cavalry? These guys mean business. I like the additions of the accouterments — nice touch. I agree with Wayne W. and Erwin… looks like what we love: Toy Soldiers. Nice display!
I have a big bag of these guys, horses, cannons. May need to take a new look…

  7. Mark T. says:

I don’t have any Rel figures, and I agree that they are pretty ugly, but Greg Liska has definitely given them their best appearance in their history. At one time before the Marx Cavalry, I guess Rel were the only US Cavalry figures you could get.
