Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China

Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China Erwin Sell is back  with some information on a little seen set of pirates and sailors.

Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China The figures

Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China

In the 90s I bought these two separated figures lots mix with others in one of my finds. The blue and yellow pirates are 12 poses and as far my research goes apparently are belong to the Red Box brand playset sold at Kmart from same series the “Only Ninja “playset made by same brand and sold at K-mart and Defunct KB Toys .
Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China

The poses are nice and well done ,unfortunately the size-scale is only 42 mm max .
Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China

In last picture they are showed with Hing Fat-53 mm- pirate and Blue Box recently made 52 mm approx pirates. Yet they had found a place in my collection as unique to me.

The next set from 1990s too made in China with C-P inc bellow base marks are 4 poses (2 are navy regular personal) while other two looks as sailors or pirates to me.
Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China

Interesting fact-While most pirates sailors made in plastic done are from XVIII century and after or early XVI centuries ,these depict by uniform in navy poses the early XVII century era that had been poorly covered by most 1.35-1.30 scale in plastic in any field with exception of English civil wars and musketeers figures.

Does any body know if they were more poses and what set or playset are belong!?

Scale are 45-48 mm high ,again showed next to 52 mm BB pirate x compare.

I appreciate any responses and look at it.

Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China My Thoughts

Red Box 42mm Pirates and Sailors Made in China

These figures are interesting.  I have not seen these figures before. Pirates are one of the few figures being made for the general market.  I wonder if we will get any new figures for Pirates of the Caribbean.

  1. Daniel Murphy says:

I bought several dollar bags of the yellow and blue Redbox pirates at a Deals store – basically a dollar store that would go up to $5 or more for a few items. I think Deals may have eventually been bought out by Dollar Tree. Along with the bags of pirates were bags of small black and red ninjas – I assume the same that were found in playsets at Kaybee and Kmart. Some of these pirate poses later showed up in a small $5 set sold in Family Dollar – now about 30mm with shrunken versions of the Toysmith pirates and skeletons – the pirates in black plastic and the skeletons a reddish brown.

    • Erwin says:

      Thank Daniel.
I recall seen the copied less detailed of Red Box too but I think were only few poses mix with copies crudes of otgers TS you mentioned.
Do you know anything about other different navy and sailor poses set?.
      Best…

      • Daniel Murphy says:

Erwin, yes the Family Dollar set just had a couple of the Redbox poses – the pirate waving a telescope in the air while lunging with a sword, and the pirate holding a telescope and sword with a parrot on his shoulder. All the other pirates were shrunken versions of the Toysmith/ToysRUs pirates. The 30mm skeletons were interesting – they had the Toysmith/TRU poses with some others, holding guns etc. This set was in a small plastic jug, just labeled “Pirate Playset” and it was distributed by Family Dollar Services. I’m afraid that I never saw the navy/sailor set – I wish I had!

        • Erwin says:

          Cool.Daniel!!!
          Thank you….
Yes other s 4 navy poses are only I had see before in many years. .
Hope find out more one day..

    Admin.
Pirates of the caribean film figures had been done since 2003 by three brands w and w out license as cakr topper in folliwing three scales.
    1.35(key change) by FURUTA , 1.32 and 65 mm.
The more common are 65 mm.
I have about 15 chracters of it and few of others.
They are not hard to find in ebay.
My first (1.32)were bough by my father and sent from Florida were he lived after first movie.
These have not disney word printed and Ppenden on base plus rare mark and numbers
Included are two british red coats soldier and officer.
Laters verssion (65mm) are much around with DISNEY printed bellow…
I also have 5 FURUTA brand made.

I have a large set of Zizzlingers Pirates of the Caribbean from some type of game set from Zizzle. These came out in 2007 and are approximately 54mm and there are around 20 poses of character figures. Theses are some nice looking figures although the poses are static. I am short 3 of a complete set. However, I rarely see them offered on ebay. Unopened packages are “blind” packs of 2 or 3 figures. Zizzle did a lot of nice POC work a decade ago. The black Pearl ships make wonderful brigs for the Royal Navy.

      • Erwin says:

        Jon.You right about the ZIssleng
I have some too and forgot too.
I had seen more in ebay too.
Too bad poses are not much dynamic as you say.
        But great 1:32 scale indeed.
        Best…

  3. Jon Burk says:

Nice poses on the Red Box Pirates; I just wish they had been in the 54mm range. Thanks for sharing these, Erwin.

  4. ed borris says:

Some of those poses have rather a wide stance, I also never saw a pirate carrying a banner into battle like that. Sort of unusual to say the least.

  5. Erwin says:

    A bit off topic.
    About pirates s ships.
CHAP MAY branda made one huge x action figures that actually work great in the 1.32 scale range.Simba too in 1994 .
Both are not hard and not expensive to find around often.
    Best….

  6. erwin says:

All do is true several in plastic manufactures made Pirates with banner, Like Starlux and then copied by Syranos with small one hand banner .I think Ed comment with respect is referring in the odd logic of a pirate caring a banner as a country significant symbol in to battle as any army soldier would be in the pose.
But I mat be wrong too of course…
Yet even if rare it may be had happen as they could be corsairs as well the black banner was use to instigate fear too .
So possibility are slim but may -could happen.
The RED BOX set in particular above is rare to me as maker made 12 poses so far ,spending time in then and as I far I know are original Chinese poses not copies of any around I know or seen before.
Same goes for 4 navy-sailors poses of Unknown source posted here as well.

Other two sets I found recently at Buffalo-NY store are also rare to me after years looking around and see all Hing Fat-it copies,Toy Smith 3 different sets and few other Chinese party supply sets plus the Toy Mayor brand 6 poses set as well and BB last one released in 2015.
Pirates are interesting to me as could be use as sailors, corsairs or what they are made for ,plus cover almost 4 centuries least in the clothing-weapon made .
    best..

  7. Andy says:

I remember playing with the MPC pirate ship with wooden dowel masts as a kid. Even though the ringhand figures were a little crude, it was still a pretty great set. I’m tempted when I see them on eBay, but they are usually damaged with missing parts. Never see them MIB. Kent has a picture of a complete set on his site. Good childhood memories.

(The Red Box pirates) I ran across this while looking up Pirates with Flags.

Unfortunately out of stock; they were being sold for $2.99.

I am sure this gentleman is known to some of you. I have bought from his ebay sales. Is he on this forum? Maybe he knows more about this set and the others for which Erwin has provided photos.

    • Erwin says:

      Jon.Thank you.
About the RED BOX 12 poses I know all info I need to know.
They were done in other colors and copied later too.
Sold as part a playset by RED BOX in 90s and dus I cataloged as RB brand. The playset had a carborad ship and cave plus some plants and plastic rock.
That ebay sellers as far I know do not post here.
He need update his site too as he has many sold out x years as till listed.I noticed it …
He usuualy resale dollar store stuff and other find clerance store bargain in his site.
I had not seen other 4 poses set ever listed in his ebay or site store.
      Best regards…

      • Jon Burk says:

        Erwin,

No disrespect meant to you; I was hoping to add more info.

Cool, I would love to see the Cardboard Ship and Cave if you have photos. I agree he has some items that need updating.

He has an FAQ page which said most of his items were from “overseas manufacturers.” I guess that would be true whether he imported them or found them at a dollar store and resold them!

I figured he would be familiar. I just thought it was cool he still was listing the figures with a photo. (although the manufacturer was not listed.) Who knows how old the page is since it does not show a last update date?

I checked his current ebay page and he had very little in the toy soldier line currently for sale.

        • erwin says:

Jon, yes you add data and thank you as I say indeed.
Not disrespect at all,may be I miss express my self in fast responses.Sorry.
Please note “The Red Box “brand I labeled=name based only in seen one playset with then inside after I found it.The Playset was sold at KB toys with RED BOX logo and few accessories /building along exact same era and playset box of a playset call (Return of the ninja ) that bring 14 poses 40 mm ninjas of original designed too as well. I have that playset ninja complete. But back then never bought the pirates. I found the seal bag with all pirates in a lot with other toys at a sale years ago .I bought the lot immediately because pirates only as I remembered seen in 90s

Pirates Figures are mark (Made in China) but not mark bellow at all .
So any else could I bet sale then too under other brand
Interesting the sale link you post does not show all 12 poses as I have .May be were more too !? .The figures have same base as the Ninjas I have and same exact scale and design sculpt.
I will post those ninjas one day soon w admin permission.
I had known that seller x least 15 years and most he carry is regular from here and dollar stores. If think are oversea as meaning from China as most stuff is .I will think.
I had not see the pirates listed from him ,but two others lot he has are least 2 years old not update as far I know.
Because he sale most off eBay I think he forgot update the web site .
He list at beginning of month during late night all at once using special eBay free listing
Long ago he just carry more stuff ,but later he had carry most generic every body else have.
I appreciate your input and post you did of course ,still curios about other 4 poses that I can not find any source at all anywhere and is odd as Chinese figures from 90s usually are easy around .
Yet last day find of rare Boley brand packed pirates set made in 2007 told me we had not see all around. May be you guys had .The store had one single pack ,lucky with 50 figures .So I got plenty…
Other odd set I found with woman is from 2014 and not many extras ,very rare but in 60 mm not painted.
I had seen one like listed in eBay but not woman pose.
          Best regards.

          • Jon Burk says:

I sent the ToySoldierDepot an email to see what he would respond, (if he responds) about getting the figures back in stock and his source. It’s probably like you said, he gets more business on ebay than his website, so doesn’t update.

    • Jon Burk says:

      A response from toysoldierdepot:

      Gerardo Vazquez

      hello

thanks for the interest…as far as we can tell, they are no longer
being made for some time, we purchased them from one of our
distributors…we do carry other Pirate sets in stock, you may want to
      take a look, thanks

  9. erwin says:

    • admin says:

the pirate holding the cannon on his shoulder is a copy of the Papo figure

      • erwin says:

Well PAPO 40mm tubes with 40 mm pirates have that pose plus others too. They were release/announced at NYC TF 2014.
        http://www.papo-france.com/en/produits/fiche-625-mini-plus-pirates

Too bad the mini figures PAPO and also by PLASTOY set-tubes are barely 42/45 mm as they have modern armies, knights ,samurai,Indians and others as well…

        • Jon Burk says:

          Erwin,

I was able to get a Plastoy Tubo pirate grouping from France and they are very nice figures. I got the whole group without the tube; and flat shipping wasn’t bad. The shipping from France with Tube was going to be as much as the figures. (You were the one that helped me locate sources on international ebay.)

As you said, too bad the items aren’t larger to match 54mm or 60mm, because these figures are pretty good and not overly expensive. I may man my MPC Pirate ships with these smaller guys!

I’m always interested in the pirates and sailors from the Napoleonic Era back to Spanish Main time frame and 45mm to 60mm. At least to see those that are available even if I don’t buy them. For example, I would like to get Barszo’s Treasure Island pirates, but unless they may be reproduced, I’m likely priced out of market for the near future.

          • erwin says:

Jon you got the Plastoy or the PAPO brand tubes.?
I know of PAPO ,but not aware of PLASTOY pirates in tubes. I Know PLASTOY have samurai, knights and soldiers .
Please let me know and their size-scale if so .
            best..

          • Jon Burk says:

The two figures I have out are a female pirate leaning forward with pistol in had at 45mm and a pirate captain leaning on a bent leg at 48mm. He might be 50mm if he were standing straight.

          • Jon Burk says:

Erwin the two figures i measured are in the 3rd and 4th rows of the photo. captain with sword and female pirate with bandana and pistol. They match up well size-wise with the 52mm Bluebox Pirate in your above photo. I have stored the rest of the Plastoy grouping away and it is not readily available to check all the heights.

          • Jon Burk says:

            Erwin,

Sizing from the photo compared to the figures at hand, the Plastoy maximum size looks like about 50mm. They are thicker figures than the Blue Box Pirates and have larger feet/shoes to help them stand since they have no bases. They all look different from Papo poses. They are much larger than the Red Box Pirates in proportions. (I got some of the Red Box Pirates from you last year. Of course, I found them easily but don’t see the box with the rest of the Plastoy pirates.)

    • Jon Burk says:

Thanks, Erwin, I hadn’t seen this set before.

They do look similar to AMSCAN. Since they are 60mm, I will probably get a bucket. Are retailers carrying these such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby? It would be nice to get them with a 40% or 50% coupon deal.

      • erwin says:

        Jon
No idea ,but you may try party supply stores or better school supply stores too ….
Yet I do not know price there and if discounts.
google same from other sellers at amazon or eBay ,may be you get better deal off .
        best..

    • Jon Burk says:

Thanks for the lead, Erwin. I got two sets in damged container for $27 including shipping, so I am happy. Amazon.com

    • Jon Burk says:

The figures were beefier than I expected, but I like some of the poses better than the AMSCAN. I can’t get the pirate with the canon on his shoulder to stand on a flat surface. The canon throws him off balance!

  10. Erwin says:

    Thanks Jon on plastoy update.
I will get then as by scale looks better than PAPO.

    • Jon Burk says:

      Erwin,

Glad to help! I got my set for 15.84 Euro including shipping in mid February, but it was not mint in box. Without the tube, but included all the figures and acessories. Too bad they don’t sell in US that I have seen.
