T D Barnecut American Buffalo Project

T D Barnecut American  Buffalo Project  is a new project from one of our readers T D Barnecut.  As you know T D has done Civil War Spike Fence.  This time he want to do the American bison.  He feels he can do it with his new machine. We will let him tell you about it.

T D Barnecut American Buffalo Project

I have been studying pictures on-line of plastic toy bison and also photos of the real ones, I’d like to try sculpting some 1/32 model bison from Sculpey or Bondo, etc. You or your wife probably have several different brands of plastic bison in your collection –  perhaps when you have the time / opportunity you could post some comparison photos of them to show the size & color variations between the different brands? I don’t know if others are interested in this but I would enjoy seeing this.

I have put up two examples that we have floating around.  The first buffalo we are showing was made in Hong Kong.  The second buffalo was made by Dom. We would like to see other buffalo. I know that ATlantic did a nice series of  buffalo. Perhaps you might have photos that you want to share of your buffalo . If you do send them to my email address pestad@gmail.com. We will post them up here.

    Thanks Paul,

I’d like to see some of the different brands of bison shown together, or with a 1/32 cowboy figure to show relative size. I have some of the Atlantic bison and I like their animated poses. I can send some pics.

TD, Am I right in guessing that you plan to sell these or is it a personal project? I would really love to get a nice herd of buffalo if the price is right. Atlantic is probably the most readily available now, which is saying something about the scarcity of 1/32 buffalo. Not to make light of a tragic historical situation, but a Plains tribesman in the post-Buffalo Bill 1880s probably saw more real bison than we now see toy ones.

Here is a picture of all the Dom Buffalo from Kent Sprecher’s site:

Here is a beautiful display of Barszo’s Sioux Buffalo Hunt from Playset Addict:

No good pictures of a human figure next to a buffalo, but from real life views of buffalo, a 6 foot tall man’s head comes almost to the top of the hump. For a size comparison, here’s a photo of a man getting married, apparently with a buffalo as his best man.

Best of luck with your thundering herd!

Been close to bison several times, depending on how tall the groom is there are some bulls out there even larger, but I think you could get away with making your average buff about head high. JMO, hope it helps.

      • TDBarnecut says:

        Thanks Wayne,
I suppose there is a wide range of bison size in a single herd. Photos online also show 3 different species of bison, so the details can be confusing.

        • Wayne W says:

No problem, personally, I’d make my average about head high but would throw in some smaller adolescents and maybe a BIG buff for the Alpha male – and of course, there are always calves…

In any event, best wishes and hope to see pix when you get it done.

          • Wayne W says:

I think I should have qualified that as their heads should be head high. Apologize for being vague.

  3. TDBarnecut says:

    Mark,
Thanks for the links and pics. Making a 1/32 bison herd in plastic is somewhat a personal quest but if they turn out OK I would be happy to trade some with other collectors, etc. I like the Barzso layout but price wise it is way beyond my means.
I have a set of the Atlantic bison in tan, I could probably just clone these if they are no longer copyrighted?
I also like the look of the Dom bison and would like to collect a set of them, again I have never seen them shown with other figures so don’t know their actual size. I wonder if they are similar in size to the Atlantic bison? I’m grateful for any other photos people can send in to Stad to add to this thread.

  4. Mark T. says:

I seem to recall people saying that the Dom buffalo were slightly undersized. The best buffalo to scale with 54mm that I know of is that Hong Kong one that Paul put up at the top of this page. The Britains buffalo is probably the most accurate, but also the one with the most boring pose.

    • erwin says:

Many European brands had done American-Eurasian Buffalos in plastic.
While most had been done as part of separated not related human 54 mm scale figures, so not quite in scale match.
Some match by size done. In my head just quick though-Comansi and Nardi are Actually 60 mm versus human as made tall and in running poses both plus two other poses each brand.
      Elastolin I think did then..
      PLaho also did

Marolin still sale and has one nice bulky pose among others in the 54/55 mm scale approx.
      https://www.marolin.de/en/toy-worlds/toy-figures/1328/play-figures-set-wild-animals

New Ray(China) did a series with then in real true 1.32 scale among other US animals.Often sold at country farm area stores supply else still around.

Big 3″ scale (PAPO,PLASTY and Sleigch) brands all had done then and smaller versus their human big scale figures range so in good scale versus 54/60 mm figures approx.

At Target a brand(TERRA) right now has one perfect heavy true 54 mm scale. And actually been market down as line discontinued.(NOT THE BUCKET SMALL VERSSION ANIMAL SETS) but loose animals

Please notice TERRA brand is not near the other big scale figures vendor rack at target and often placed in back inferior endcaps at stores.
SAFARI.LTD made another very nice but standing pose(I have two).
you can google it easy ,it stand above 54 mm figure shoulder easy.

At TRU brand Discovery had a set with wild animals with real actually more x 60 mm scale nice advancing Buffalo.

“Yankee dollar” and some dollar store release from 2013 till 2015 least a series of one dollar loose wilder cheap animal. The bison and elephants are true 54 mm 100% I got two each. Not much detail but nice size and pose painted.

Dom -Manurba are about same or smaller versus Atlantic, not in scale with 54 mm versus human if adult bison scale..

I been out my office/house x past week and half and can not do much research; but as soon I come back I will pull more info..
      hope this help a bit…
      best regards.

Don’t forget the Beton/Bergen ones, can find in “Hard” and “Soft” plastic and almost any colour, anyway I like them,LOL.

    • TDBarnecut says:

Andy, thanks for posting the Buffalo Bill link, the price is beyond me. I first found Atlantic figure sets in the late 80’s at hobby stores, around $5 – $8 which seemed high then. Also picked up many of the Atlantic WWII sets for $2 from a Colorado dealer. Atlantic were not in great demand at the time, most American collectors were seeking out Marx figures which were not yet being re-issued. If the Atlantic tooling had not been’ lost at sea’, I think they would be in re-issue as well and dirt cheap right now.

      • Andy says:

Hey, TDB – I only wish Atlantic came in a true 54mm, especially the Sheriffs & Outlaws and the Miners sets.
Recently saw an unboxed Outlaws set with hanged man and horse dragging guy sell for around $325 on eBay. I wonder how much my boxed set would fetch?? I have it stored because too it’s big to fit well with my 54mm displays, but I think I’d be sorry if I sold it. Good luck with your bison project.

  6. erwin says:

Sorry;adding to what I say above..
Schleich,Bully and Elastolin are same scale bison in about 60 mm scale. The best is Elastolin super nice realist pose running at full speed with rise tail.
is not hard to find in eBay as done under Preisser till 90s still .
In old brands I think Timpo did one pose base in old metal mold as other animals they did ,but not sure of scale ,the pose is standing like Britain pretty much
From France Starlux did about 6 to 8 poses I think, but only one is true big enough.
    Cyranos did several too.
The problem is that several of European brands made looks more like Eurasian Buffalo than American and you can notice a bit difference at simple view.
    best…x now…

  7. bill nevins says:

Mark T That’s a deceptive photo with the guy getting married near the Buffalo. I’ve seen wild herds up close out in Montana and South Dakota and those suckers are BIG.

A full grown Bull is taller than that guy and weighs 10 times as much, at least.

The filthiest animals you’ve ever smelled!!! UGH! STINK!

  8. erwin says:

Standard Buffalo are tall generally ,yet some young males and females are much smaller.
So it depend in herd and animal.
The taller may be the wild in reservation.
However in Upstate NY some farms have then X breed .I often see then and they looks bigger ,specially because to back steep hump towards front make then looks very tall plus winter hair too and bigger than normal cow/bull head.
    To me…
The smell to me is same as a herd of cows in farms, but they are very close pack animlas, often sleeping resting over each other and more furry hair, they may get their smell more attach than others do.
    my thoughts..
    best …

  9. Jack Gibbons says:

I had a farmer friend who used to raise a buffalo herd north of Columbus. I took my kids out to spend some time on the farm and see the bison. Having grown up around farms with beef and dairy cattle I was amazed at how big the bison were, particularly the bull in the field. My friend remarked that although domesticated the bison were far more unpredictable and incredibly dangerous when compared to cattle.

I agree with Bill on the size, and I am sure the clumps of fur probably were far from clean.

Any chance the Barzso bison molds are still available?

  10. erwin says:

    Yes.
That guy next to Young male is not showing a real Adult.
that animal is not near full grow at all .I had seen then very often and close range here.Adult males have bigger head and taller hump. Also the picture is taken from ground level up angle and I can not tell if guy is 5 or 6 f either…
    My thoughts of course..

  11. bill nevins says:

I’m familiar with farm animals and the smell is like home to me. There’s something real about it. I never minded it.

Buffalo…. STINK .They roll around in their own waste, something to do with keeping flies off them. Their fur is all matted and gross. And a big Bull head is the size of a 2 person European car. They roam in big herds in the West and have been known to take on cars that annoy them and destroy them. They are mean SOB’s when pissed off.

    • Erwin says:

      Yes. They do…you correct Bill.
      Many others animals too.
Upstate here Moose do same in people and cars. We had several incident.
In 2013 we had late night few hours roads closed because one was roaming loose in middle town .They can not be shoot but tranquilizer only.It took long before done and houl away.
Still all bisons and moose are impressive animals and I love animlas in general.
      Regard less.
The farms here that breed then x meat are a great business State subsidized in many cases.
Most are in north west area where I live.
My child had been take in school trip to then.
We also got two at our zoo here.
      Best…..
