Mattel Log Cabin and Beton Lone Ranger

Mattel Log Cabin and Beton Lone Ranger  in this article we are going to look at two different items. In regards the Mattel Cabin I had the following questions asked about it. The questions are when was it made and what set did it come in.

Mattel Log Cabin and Beton Lone Ranger

The Mattel log cabin is a very nice piece to add to your western scenes. It is hard plastic.  I am not sure off hand if the roof was painted as it has been since I have had one.  It is hard plastic. The building one piece and The building is design for 54mm.

As I mention before I have found several of the cabins  over the years never in their original packaging .

Beton Lone Ranger

Mattel Log Cabin and Beton Lone Ranger

With the Beton Lone Ranger I have a different problem is this a real Beton Lone Ranger or not. The source claim it was but I  have my doubts.  Beton never did any license figures that I know of.  The color of the Lone Ranger clothing is  for the 50’s Lone Ranger Clayton Moore. The Lone Ranger in the movie serials that was made before the television show  had black pants.  I have looked at the  paint and it does not look a repaint.

Mattel Log Cabin and Beton Lone Ranger Final Thoughts

The figure is the small Beton cowboy rider with pistol.  The person did a good job of painting the figure and got a unpainted white horse. Whether it is a factory paint or not I will keep the figure   I have several figures of the Lone Ranger in my collection. I have a course all three versions of the Marx Lone Ranger  I am not sure if have the two variations of Marx 60mm Lone Ranger walking. I know I have him with base. I have to check if I have him with the log.  I have mounted Lone Ranger from Lone Star and I have the  custom job that Joe Saine did using a Timpo mounted cowboy.

  2. erwin says:

Answer.MATTEL cabin was first released in the 1973 PRESCHOOL CAMP playset
It is every were ,I had like 4 and end with two left now, I had see it at garage sale, flea markets in most time not complete playset. It is all over eBay every week in mass too.

  3. erwin says:

Just type Mattel Preschool Camp Putt Putt ..

    • erwin says:

Also the Preschool Motor Putt-Putt playset from Mattel have 4 building good x 1.32 scale too and nice done x any train station from late western till mid 70’s

    • admin says:

Well is the first time I have seen the set. Very interesting thanks

      • erwin says:

Yes I know it happen to me with other items too all around and first spotted
When I first saw it after seen a partial Mattel playset I start googling and then I realize under Mattel how many out there ,so I start fishing then as you show and mention is a nice add on to our hobby and well done in scale too, the 1971-1976 playset of same series bring a lot accessories building compatible as well, after quality start to be more toy x small kid designed,

  4. erwin says:

I’m lost in Beton of course..sorry

  5. Daniel Murphy says:

As a very young boy I had piles of the “Bergen Beton” mounted cowboys and Indians, and loved them because of the snug fit of the riders on their horses. I had lots of guys in the pose above, but by my time they came unpainted in soft plastic and were packaged in what seemed to me to be large bags. I never saw anything like the figure above, and probably would not have recognized him as the Lone Ranger anyway because I only saw the Lone Ranger in reruns on our black and white tv – the blue outfit would have been lost on me.

  6. bill nevins says:

I have the cabin in both painted roof and unpainted roof so apparently, it came both ways.
I took the plastic doors off a busted up Fort Apache Cabin. The one with the plastic lookout top piece and flag pole. I took one of the doors and glued it about 3/4’s of the way open on the Mattel cabin, so I can have a guy shooting inside the cabin from behind the door. I painted the whole thing and it came out very well. I’l have to track it down and take some pix.

    • Erwin says:

Bill the doors idea sounds good.
      I will try it.
I think some body else made a cabin w out door.
And is not x three pigs tale please!!
      I will find out.
Lone star did a nice cabin too.

  7. bill nevins says:

I should have been more clear.
It’s the door from the plastic BlockHouse, not a tin cabin.
It fits perfectly in the Mattel cabin doorway.
I’ve also made 2 other doors from balsa wood.

  8. ed borris says:

Never was a fan of the Lone Ranger, however I did like the 50mm riding a horse pose. I got him and some cowboys through some cereal deal, my Aunt saved up box tops I guess and sent a sent to me and my cousin. It was the first box I ever got in the mail, of course they all have been lost to mom.

  9. ed borris says:

On cabins I always like the Ideal cabin.

  10. Andy says:

Ditto on the Ideal cabin. They had a couple of great tin town fronts with plastic jail bars. Also a RCMP tin HQ. Like the Auburn plastic cabin, too.

  11. Andy says:

You know what else I really like is the C and B Western Town Miniature Motion Picture Set. Made of lithographed cardboard in 1950s but always on eBay mint in box for under $100. Have looked at them for years & finally bought one. Furnished it with recast Marx indoor town furniture, both hotel & jail sides. Fun to punch out & assemble & real nice display pieces.

  12. ed borris says:

I had that Ideal RCMP set and town, I had asked for the Marx Artic set and got that one instead. Best mistake my mom ever made, I had much more fun with that set that I ever would have had with the Marx set. Granted the Marx set was much better looking, but it was really kind of boring in comparison. The Marx set was one of those you set up and then what? The Ideal RCMP set was the site of many Indian attacks. Igloos just do not make good defensive settings.

  13. erwin says:

Ideal cabin is nice, but I sold out the one I got as I become more realistic, the cabin is not typical suitable x cold region, roof is almost flat made of planks ,will collapse fast in real winter region and filter water of course.Looks like was made x amateurs in the wilder summer camp.
Beside is a typical toy with designed half molded accessories, such half barrel(where is the other part of it?)-same way plasticville smaller
I kept the Urburn as more rustic and well scale even small cabin. This Matter ,playmobil and two Europeans made in plastic and Lincoln logs style.
My personal thoughts and like of course…

  14. ed borris says:

Realism never concerned me when I was a kid, I mean I never had space men in an Indian battle, but as long as it was close it was good enough for me. Today, you have to work with what they make, manufacturer’s are smart, they seldom pigeon hole themselves into making things figures that will only fit one scenario if they can help it. Mexicans lancers, can also be Napoleonic lancers, Civil War cavalry can be Indians Wars cavalry. Sure they are not 100% historically accurate, but how much that is made yesterday or today is really 100% spot on? This hobby is much like the real world it’s not perfect and I can live with that because I really don’t have much choice. I mean it’s what 180 years since the battle at the Alamo was fought and the so called experts cannot say with any certainty what the Alamo actually looked like at the time of the battle. For instance how many Lunettes were there? What did the north wall look like, etc. etc. Sure, they’ve written 100’s of books about it and most of them have their own versions of the appearance of the Alamo. I just read a book about Custer and they’re still arguing about what was the deep ravine, where was the gray horse troop, did anyone survive and slink away, how long did the battle last? It goes on and on, sort of like this post.

  15. Erwin says:

Realism was never my concer either as child.I bet most of us same.
In uniforms I can pass as far not too crazy
In poor detail with half barrel instructed in logs wall and wrong roof I treated as a toy.
I collect both way toys x nostalgic or like as simple toy and x historical accuracy.
Unfurtunately the ideal cabin x me is not a nostalgic neither a fun toy.
    So I discarded off.
I can pass some uniforms wile not too obvius.
Alamo dragon lancers uniform is not a big difference as was base in old french napoleonic uniforms.
I had not see an artic cabin w roof uncover made of plank w space between on snowing area specially with almost flat roof.
Indians and skimos most be laughting from their igloo huts/tent how whites got all wet and sick inside.:-) 🙂
Is above simple logic in my opinion
But like is been said to every body their like.:-) 🙂
    Best….

  16. erwin says:

Timpo farm ranch western building that is actually a realistic true cabin is much detailed with opening and close double windows and door all made of log designate windows. The will are thick wall logs made, so are window, very in scale with figures arms and hands. Much more suitable x any deep forest old west or frontier war block house defense cabin. I manage get one long ago out of a German site, later another on eBay. I love it!!

  17. OIF-Retread says:

Mattel made a whole series of “Putt Putt” playsets in the 1970s: a railroad, a camp, a construction yard, and an auto speedway, among others. Although they are made for small kids, many contained usable buildings for 54 mm figures. There was a covered bridge, a gas station, the cabin, and others.

I have the cabin in both unpainted dark brown, and in tan with a painted green roof. I have seen pictures of a dark brown with green roof, but haven’t found one. I assume there might be unpainted tan as well.

As mentioned, the cabin makes an excellent addition to any western town or fort layout.

    • erwin says:

yes, I agree and did mention the other playset above early, the Preschool Motor Putt-Putt 1972 has the more buildings, they did two other with mix accessories as well.
Thomas train early playset with wild cabin is nice too with nice cabin too.
There is two more pretend toy playset from other brands with nice cabin as well done. I forgot name/brand now.

      • erwin says:

Mattel Road King Mountain Mining Set # 7615 has a terrain that I use as artillery position platform ,it has a road with mono rail, easy to remove and make look like way to trench emplacement circular position. Work great to place a regular artillery piece inside. Other section could be use as machine gun or else.
        The crane is nice too.

    • Pjri says:

Like that cabin very much. I have one in yellow! Auburn cabin is too large to me now.

  18. Andy says:

I have sets 1 & 2 of Replicants smugglers working inside my recast Marx Gunsmoke coal mine (the one with the molded plants that look like snakes) along with original Miners & Trappers and recast Arctic Explorers with different heads with hats vs. hoods from recast Miners/Trappers, Conte Alamo, Shenandoah metal heads, etc. painted medium gray. They seem to be getting along harmoniously and I’m happy with them. Hoping the inspectors don’t come and shut down my curio cabinet for crossing centuries with toy figures….. The Replicant smuggler with flaming torch is an all time classic figure. BTW Ed, I’m pretty sure space men fought Indians somewhere on TV. You know how those spaghetti Westerns took license with historical accuracy. (Like US history as taught in this country is close to accurate…..)

  19. Isn’t the Mattel cabin dated?

  20. Andy says:

Hey Erwin, or whoever, How big are Playmobil buildings actually – say compatible with toy figure scale – would 54mm figures work, 60mm, bigger????? I like Sheriff’s Office with break away wall, but afraid it may look way too big for 54mm Marx, etc..

  21. Erwin says:

I will do some google see if I find what u want and send you links…

    • Andy says:

Erwin, thanks very much. Pictures with figures helpful. Bought a Playmobile mine for good price on eBay and looking at Sheriff’s Offices. One problem is I’m running out of display space (and money) for everything I want. The Amazon link is very attractive at the price.

      • ERWIN says:

YES money ,time and space is always our main problem.
Playmobil will there x long, you can wait if like…
I always give priority to old items or not sold here in US.
My main problem is space and time always.
99% of my collection is in cases. My daughter is the one opening and make me put together things x her. I think she will collect toy soldiers and dinosaurs in future. LOL!!

  22. Wayne W says:

I never minded flat-roofed cabins or buildings as they made great ramparts to forts. IMO the Ft Apache didn’t have enough places for the guys to stand on the walls and the platforms or ramparts they did have were really too narrow. So I would put my MPC or other buildings up against the walls for my defenders to stand on.

I checked out ebay for the Mattel cabin. I found it amusing that there is an entire putt-putt playset on sale/auction for less than the cabin by itself. Doncha love ebay?

  23. Tom W says:

As regards the Lone Ranger. I would suggest that neither piece is Beton. The horse looks like Ajax, since the inside of the legs appear to be flat and Beton’s were with some rounding on the inside. The LR appears to be a Lido, probably with the original plastic color of light blue. If you look at O’Brien’s books, all Betons are shown with the pistol barrel horizantal. Lidos and Archers all have the barrel vertical. With no “rivets” on the legs and with the pocket showing a flap, this would make this figure a Lido.

    • admin says:

      Tom
Thanks for the tip. I always have the problem on Beton versus the other companies that copied them It is one of few figures I can not tell the difference. The other off hand is the Britains Deetail red beret.

  24. erwin says:

HERE is partial Timpo ,(missing front railing) cabin.
Mine is in box still, but I like the wall and window design, making minor opening x muskets/rifles will do a great strong block house else I guess.

  25. Jim Bucholz says:

I would look at Metal Cast Co., Barclay, Plastic Toys, Inc. and Tim Mee for similarities in cowboy and pistol designs. I think it is a Beton low volume production specimen OR a Beton test specimen from the sculptor. Just my thoughts.
