Bill Nevins Finds Marx Reissue Covered Wagon

Bill Nevins  has sent us some of  more of his finds. The first one is a Fort Frontier playset which while not exciting until realize it has a Marx reissue wagon minus the top.  here is what Bill said on this find.

At the market this Sunday I bought two of these Fort Frontier playsets(pic 1). I bought them from 2 different dealers. The box cover clearly shows a gray/greenish Marx wagon, with a cow and a mule for a team. IMG_0377

The second pic shows the Marx covered wagon and the small accessories that came with it.

The second playset has a beautiful RED wagon enclosed. Not that translucent red, that the wagons in the Westward Ho! sets had in them. This is a nice rich red. The sprue shows the small accessories included. The box cover is exactly the same, picturing the gray/green wagon on the cover.
So far I have seen them in:
Fort Frontier
Westward Ho !

Are there others? And what other colors exist? This Gray is a really unique color and I would love to get a few more of them.
Bill thought that Marx covered wagons were made in Mexico. I advised him that covered wagon had been run in the United States for a person who had various parts and put together playsets for discount stores. This party ran out of MPC wagons and had Excalibur run the wagons for them. The party just got wagons minus tops of horses.  I used to look for these playsets and it was a crap shoot what wagon you would get. This playset that Bill has the picture of the Marx covered wagon.

The next photo is  a group of  Michel Cowboys and Indians  that Bill Nevins got. Michel was  cheaper brand of Starlux that was sold in various Five and Dime stores in the 50’s. The majority sold were cowboy and Indians, they also sold pirates. The pirates were released later under the Starlux brand.

Cool finds and it solved a long standing mystery for me. The Injun in the back, kneeling firing was in my collection as a child. I got him from my brother, with a load of WoW Injuns. I thought he belonged in the set. When I got back into collecting, I found out he didn’t and wondered just what brand it was. I thought I might have even just remembered wrong and it didn’t exist at all. I’m sure that is the figure, though.

I had few Michael ,but also others PAINTED soft copies done by Spaniards not main brands too such as ROJAS,MIRAS,MARTES Y CAPELL that copy from JIM ,Starlux and Jim among others. For some reason I like more the Indians and cowboys of Michael,Jim and cofalu versus starlux.
Nice set find and in great condition .Good market for French collectors I should add

I too had some Michel figures. My Aunt bought them for me as cake toppings for one of my birthdays in the late 50’s. There were two mounted figures, one cowboy with a blue shirt and a a white horse (he was , for me, the Lone Ranger) and an Indian on, I think it was, a white horse. Sadly I only still have the Cowboy figure with a short pistol. They were a type of hard plastic that broke easily. I had no idea who made them, nor did I care at the time. I only found out they were Michel figures when I started becoming a “collector” and did some reading and research. Nice find Bill. I also have an MPC “Westward Ho !” boxed set, but it had the substandard MPC wagon.

Allen ford was selling that wagon as recently as a few years ago in various colors. I remember he had quite a few red ones
