Target Dollar Pirates

001

Awhile back a reader mentioned that he had seen at Target a series of pirates for $1.00.  I had it on my list to go and check it out and did so a few weeks ago. I found the knights and the pirates, but they only one bag of pirates and it was incomplete. Still I bought it as I did not know if I would see it again.

Yesterday I got back to Target to get a DVD copy of Princess Bride. This is a great little movie that Laurie has never seen and while it is on television a lot, I felt a DVD of it would be better to watch it.  I went to Target for the DVD and could not find it.  I was going to leave the store when I decided to check the dollar section. To my surprise they had the pirates.

The bag has eight different pirates. These pirates had been out before in a painted version.  As noted in the posting from our very good friend  Erwin Sell, these pirates were out in the late 90’s and were sold in bags at museums and some Disney park stores.  Erwin noted that pirates had several Asian type pirates.  The Target set comes with the firing rifle pose not the Blackbeard type pose.

The bag comes with three accessories: a raft with a mast, Three barrels tied together and spy glass. The Spy glass you should be able to attach to one of the pirates but I found the stem too thick and you would need to be shaved it down. A nice little set to give a child who is into pirates.

I was in Target this morning and they already seem to have moved the pirates out, along with the bags of 20 grey and black knights. No great loss with the knights – shrunken and thin clones of the painted Supreme knights; their bases were ridiculously narrow, even by ToySmith (the people who make the $1 Target stuff) standards, and the bases were so thin that many warped, so the figures could not stand on a flat surface. Replacing the pirates and knights are bags of “fairy tale” figures aimed at little girls – princesses, fairies, mermaids etc. Also bags of jungle animals with a rock formation and trees, and dinosaurs and a rock formation and trees. Like all such inexpensive stuff the animals are in no natural proportion to each other; the dinos are interesting because the t-rex/raptors (didn’t look too closely) reflect recent research in having feathers.

I believe some of the knights in the Target bag are copies of Esci. I agree the knights are not exciting. I will check the ones you mention.

You are right – the Supreme knights were clone variants of the old Esci/Italieri 1/72 crusaders! Mixed in the Target bag are also some versions of the common 15th century knights, variants of which you can find in the ToysRUs buckets. Italieri probably did 1/32 versions of their crusaders, and the Chinese did 60mm painted vinyl clones, some of which I believe I saw recently in HobbyLobby.

Will send pictures soon.

I was surprised that Target had restock the pirates. I will have to go to my Cracker Barrel and see if the pirates are available.
