Toy Hunter Nerd of Mouth

In this episode Jordan Hembrough is looking for a unique Superhero toy for Mark Lawrence. Mark is a comedian and also does a podcast. Jordan goes with Steve Savino to Dan, who bills himself as a flea market mogul.  (Steve feels he is the flea market mogul.) The first item that Jordan finds is a Tomy Spinjas in the box.  Jordan pays $125.00 and feels he will sell it for $300.00. I could not find any examples on EBay. Steve finds some  1964 Worlds Fair Glasses, which he pays $50.00 for the 5 glasses which he will either sell for $20.00 each or keep as he had attended the Worlds Fair.  Checking EBay I found that worlds glasses selling for under $10.00 each. Jordan then finds a Batman Ray gun in the box for $100.00, which he will sell for $200.00. I could not find any examples on EBay.

Next Jordan and Steve  goes to the Sellersville Auctions for a toy auction. Steve is a regular and alerts Jordan that there are some heavy players at the show. One of those people is Ed, who is  ready for battle. First item that Jordan goes up for is  Kenners Super Powers Shazam on the card. Jordan stops when the bidding on the figure reaches $200.00.  Next up is Corgi Captain America vehicle in the box, which Jordan gets for $150.00. Jordan figures to sell the item for $225.00. Checking EBay, I found one for sale for $300.00. The last item that Jordan bids on is a Mego Hulk on the card until it reaches $130.00.

Jordan goes next to John, where he finds an Iron Man Secret Wars. Secret Wars was a comic book series where a select group of Marvel heroes and villains were take to another world by the Beyonder to battle. Jordan pays $20.00 and plans to sell it for $35.00. Checking EBay I found the figure on the card is selling between $35.00 to $80.00. Next Jordan finds a Hulk Rage Cage, which Jordan plans to sell for $175.00. I could not find any examples on EBay.

The last section shows Jordan going to Mark Lawrence’s podcast. Jordan decides to take one item in to the podcast the Hulk Rage Cage. Mark purchases the item and Jordan feels that Mark’s listeners will come to him.

When we were watching this episode, Laurie was surprised how weak the crowd  was, I had to explain to her that the auction divides  the toys in types. Usually the Sellersville auction sells older toys like trucks first when auction starts, once their section is done, the buyers usually leave. The action figures are later, late morning  early afternoon. Even though this group looks small prices can go up and very bloody.

Auctions can be one most frustrating aspects of  toy buying. I have gone to auctions where it has been a battle and other times it has been a cake walk. The Sellersville Auction you have to plan for a battle. You are dealing with collectors and dealers, who are coming from Philadelphia area as well as my home area.  Because of the diversity of collectors and  dealers from different areas, the prices someone will pay for an item can vary.  Add to that the personalities of the bidder. One person can feel I am not going to let other guy get the item at any price and the price sky rockets above its normal price.  You have to be prepared to know when to quit and be happy with what you got.  You can see on Jordan’s face that he is annoyed and frustrated that he got one item.

One other thing on the auction, Steve says he is a regular, I question that as the auction is out of Steve’s normal roaming range.  I will have to ask Steve about that the next time I see him.

Over all the show was unexciting, the bit on the diet was poorly written. I had to laugh on Jordan’s attitude that all of Mark Lawrence’s listeners will come to him as the go to guy.   We will see if that is true.
