No name, no action, no buy.

  2. ERWIN F SELL says:

Too bad not much action poses as Romans are from Julios Cesar with armour era period historical detail poor covered by plastic makers .

I got two sets of the Romans two years ago at the Chicago Show from Steve Weston.

I thought they were actually quite good 60mm figures, in a good soft plastic.

But yes, it’s kind of odd that whoever makes them doesn’t attach any kind of company name or logo to them.

And, of course, Mr. Weston and his wife, won’t be in Chicago this year.

I’ve thought about ordering some from the Russian dealers on the internet, but the quoted postage seemed so high, and I never could figure out how to actually get combined postage to order several sets. I sent an email question on the subject, but never received a response.

At that time I was planning on charging down to Steve Weston’s room when I arrived at the Hyatt, but then got the word about him being absent this year.

On another note, I received a set of the Chintoy Conquistadors and Aztecs in the mail today, from Scott’s Model Shop.

As is always the case with Chintoys, the figures really are excellent.

It does appear, however, that the sets were sculpted by two different persons, in that the Aztecs are noticeably bulkier than the Conquistadors.

Height-wise, I measured an Aztec who was standing straight up. From the bottom of the base to the top of his headress he measured two and one half inches tall.

I then took a Conquistador who was standing straight up. From the bottom of the base to the high point on his helmet he measured two and a quarter inches tall.

But both sets are very well sculpted, with good detail and in a good quality soft plastic.

The Conquistadors are cast in gray plastic, and the Aztecs/Mixtecs/Zapotecs are cast in medium blue.

If Spaniards if smaller versus indians are a bit odd situation in any diorame ,should be equal or other way around to looks more realistic .Scotts carry many other russian brands as well .
The NO NAME was established as i mentioned before because these maker is exactly cloning-coping an actual active metal casting maker of same figures and to avoid legal issues uses it .
This sets in my opinion was choose out of other more action poses they(Metal true maker of this figures) offer in metal .Not idea why poor in combat choice made ,while they could be use in any other scene of course .Mounted could be fix bend arm forward easy ,rest hard to convert in fighting poses .
Beside these producers has tendency add one or two poses a bit later to each set and it is annoying as you end buying another set to get then or else
      My thoughts.

I thought the conquistadores are fantastic, although the bases are a little uneven. Don’t know it the hot water trick will help. I was disappointed to see my second set had some different color plastic leftover in it, like a pinkish residue. Also the knee of one pose had what looks like to the naked eye a piece of copper metal embedded in the knee. Question: Is that reason enough to ask for an exchange or not or am I too picky? Scott is great and I have bought all my Chintoys figures from him. In my opinion, the Aztecs are not that good of sculpting, seem bulky and not as sharp. Haven’t purchased them yet.

      • Don Perkins says:

In my humble opinion, it’s being too picky.

As to the Aztecs, they are indeed thicker & bulkier than the Conquistadors, and slightly taller, too. The sculpting of the Conquistadors is more delicate, detailed, and refined. But, having said that, the Aztecs are nevertheless nice figures, well-sculpted, and sufficiently detailed — just not quite as much as the Conquistadors — and still well worth getting.

      • ERWIN F SELL says:

        I had both and I ..
“My personally like only please and not to dissuade or put a fight on it please”.
The indians are disappointed to me in detail versus else done by this maker. The Aztecs being smaller to indian is another rare difference as should be other way around but i can pass on that .
The color used in indians is odd too, least my set using blue In my opinion using skin ,light brown or even red type color would be better choice .
I had not try hot work on these material figures .
Ask Scott with photo x exchange of entire set-not poses ,he may able pick a better mold cast off his set x you but you may end paying shipping out and in again.
        My thoughts.

Yes, the choice of blue as a color for the Aztecs could have been better — tan, brown, red-brown — would all have been an improvement, for those of us who choose not to paint the figures. But remember, Chintoys is the company which put it’s Confederate generals in a blueish gray, and it’s Union generals in butternut-brown.

But, as has been discussed previously, many European makers miss the boat (in my opinion) in their choice of colors: Call To Arms made their British 24th Foot for the Zulu War in tan, rather than red. And when Accurate back in the 80s introduced their American Revolution figures, it released the Americans in gray, and the British Redcoats in tan! My understanding is that it was Bill Murphy of Excaliber Hobbies who persuaded Accurate to go ahead and release new sets in more proper colors, thereby making many American collectors (me among them) happier.

And to further elaborate on the issue of returning products with minor imperfections: For a $20.00 set of soldiers, with $3.00 in postage, it seems like quite a bit of trouble and excessive postage to return a set to California for what seem (to me, anyway), to be quite minor imperfections.

It’s one of the negatives of ordering all this stuff by mail these days that sometimes it’s just not worth the effort to try to correct every little detail of an order. But I admit, sometimes even I get a little frustrated at something I’ve ordered, when it’s not perfect, but when I contemplate the time & expense of sending it back for a replacement, it’s just too much of a bother.

The days of being able to run back down to Sears or the local five & dime store for an exchange (after we had gotten home and opened the package) are long gone. The brick & morter stores tried to persuade American shoppers for years that there were advantages to buying from a local retailer rather than off the internet, but we all were captivated by lower prices and convenience. We forgot that it was more convenient until a problem with the order arose — at which point resolving the problem became considerably less convenient.

And while I’m on my high horse about colors of plastic, I remember Airfix also did the same thing with their otherwise excellent 1/32 scale Napoleonics: the French Regulars & Old Guard were both cast in gray, and then the British Regulars & Highlanders were also cast in the very same shade of gray as the French.

Louis Marx would never have done that to his clientel of little boys!

And speaking of Louis Marx, I just found out that Playset Magazine’s new illustrated book, to be released at OTSN this September, is going to be on the subject of all the Marx Alamo playsets. This goes along with their previously well-illustrated & well-documented books on (1) Fort Apache, (2) the Blue & Gray sets, and (3) their original 2-volume history of the Marx Toy Company. I’ve got them all, and really look forward to being able to add the new Alamo volume to my bookshelf. They are all in an identical size and format, profusely illustrated, and therefore have the look of a perfect set when they are all lined up together.

Playset Magazine’s new July/August 100th Anniversary issue will probably start arriving in our mailboxes in the next few days, and will probably have the Alamo announcement contained therein.

Don the reason after Airfix napoleonic all cast in grey was as were primarily and sold as hobby military replicas to be paint, same as ESSI napoleonic from 70/80s in grey and tan.
grey tan colors are the best base mate colors to cover with paint ,specially by time made .
Also as made for Europe. market first where painting is a plus ,so the base colors is not relevant
While later reissues of Airfix under US producers were made for specif US market in basic unpainted base colors to cover the main armies used colors such red-for British,Blue for french and so on ,same in WW2 that many early sets were made in grey colors too(Russian,Paras,Italian,Modern and else) .New makers of the Replica hobby figures line had try to make the American flavor preference such HAT,IMEX ,ACCURATE and others to adapt to both markets in order to profit as every time less money out making toy soldiers or figures in plastic .
Two different ideas market back then.

  5. Eddie White says:

To me for a comparison it is like the conquistadores are comparable to Marx 54mm figures and the Aztecs are like the early Marx 45mm/60mm figures in detail and quality of sculpting.

On another note, Conte has been quiet and have not seen any updates to his new site. Any more news?
