Mars Toy Soldier Preview Delta Force  Somalian  Insurgents Figures Thoughts

I feel that this set was inspired by the movie Black Hawk Down.  The movie was based on a true incident from 1993.  I will be curious to the reaction to having a teenage insurgent with a weapon as part of the set.  Some of the insurgent’s faces are good while others are bad. Delta Force’s face are uniform with no difference.

I think the Delta Force figures should be popular, and can be used for a variety of scenarios. I’m less sure about the Somali figures – dramatic and interesting as the Black Hawk Down battle was. I suppose it will come down to how many people think they can use the figures for other conflicts in Africa and the Middle East. Personally, I have never been a fan of “shot” guys, especially in small sets. It feels like I am getting one less usable figure for my largely play purposes. I’m ambivalent about the boy figure. It is historically accurate. I guess it comes down to how realistic you want to be gaming or doing dioramas of recent brutal conflicts. For what it is worth, boy figures have shown up in toy soldier sets before – one that comes immediately to mind is the 1990s Processed Plastic pirates. I always thought the figure with a pistol and holding a keg was an adolescent.

  2. Edward L Bearnson says:

Have any idea when these will be ready and will they be painted as shown in picture?
    Thanks, Ed Bearnson. 9-22-17.

  3. Brian Johnson says:

About time a Company started doing Modern Day Insurgent Figures! Now for some Iraqis and Chechens although a Russian Company might not be too keen on Chechens right now.

  4. Benjamin says:

Great subject matter. Some of the figures could be converted and painted as ISIS figures. As far as the kid with the weapons, it does not bother me. Looking forward to painting these figures.

  5. ERWIN SELL says:

I think these figure will move in to more young generation collector and wargamers ,the children and teen in figures is very historical considering today many modern armies, most from Africa use massive children troops in their militia .
For first generation collectors thematic has a limited margin i think.
figures could be use x conversion easy as not accurate detailed either and cheap sets.
I do not think Russian will have any issue making any separatist force as they had done terrorist sets and afghans sets as well .There not such political taboo motivation on these makers today as was long before .There was actually more taboo here with Vietnam and thanks to Russian the issues move out the ice with sets now .
    my thoughts.
    best

  6. Mark T. says:

I particularly like the insurgent in the classic “holding rifle over head and firing wildly in general direction of enemy” pose. The boy soldier is a very realistic part of modern 3rd world warfare. The turban wearers could easily fit into any middle-eastern conflict. Some of the others could be used in sub-saharan African combats and even post-apocalyptic scenarios or as modern era mercenaries.

I like the Delta Force as well. I hope Mars will do some “operators” from a private company like Blackwater. I would love to have some modern figures armed with modern weapons and in a mix of civilian and military gear.

    • Erwin says:

Yes that pose should had been done in any vietnam side army soldier set too. That often is way many fire in the jungle .See plenty different photo snd documentary showing it.

  7. r smith says:

My reactions to the Somali teenager are a lot less then ken Burns knife in the back to every Veteran of Vietnam,,,we few ,,the proud,,The “uneducated,,lower class not smart enough to duck the draft and the military”

  8. Les White says:

For guys that like to convert I think that these are very useable sets for modern conflicts and urban warfare.
The Delta Force would be good for Police SWAT/Tactical units as many have worn the DF headgear and without a heavy weapons guy makes them even better.
The Somalis could work out quite good with some head swaps to make inner city ‘gang bangers’, Drug dealers, Zombie hunters, etc.
The sculpting seems a little more toy like than previous offerings from MARS but that could also be down to the painting.
I’m hoping that the ‘kid’ is the figure you only get one of in a set.
For you guys that know about these things what is the weapon on the left handed guy kneeling firing up ?

  9. Tom Black says:

I’m no expert but it looks like a M-14 with a scope.

    • Erwin says:

      M14 w M68 scope reflect side scope…
      Best

      • Wayne W says:

M14s are sometimes used for sniping. Good weapon – just introduced at a bad time as far as the US military was concerned. Or something like that…

        • Les White says:

Thanks all for identifying the weapon.
Is the colour that it is painted a normal colour for the stock ? I’ve only previously seen it in brown wood grain.

          • George A. Albany III says:

In recent years, the military has been taking 14s out of inventory, refurbishing them and often adding synthetic stocks to replace the original wooden stocks. Makes the stock more stable (for sniping) and a little lighter and easier to carry. I believe they’ve been using tan stocks for desert camouflage.

          • Erwin says:

Is the color depicted in film.
They are done limited as that to a choice x some units. But not quite standardized.
            Best

  10. Jason Loh says:
