Peter Evans found this ad in his archive.  This ad is from the House of Miniatures offered various Marx figures. You could get Marx 60mm Spacemen all 8 posess for $1.00 post paid! Prince Valiant figures and knights 18 pieces post paid.  There are 9 different sets.  The ad tells you can get other figures and vehicles. A brochure was included.

This is amazing piece of history that Peter uncovered.  We will need to find out what comic books it was placed in.  The ad is before 1963 as there is no zip code.

Ed Borris set me pictures of a combination of  barber shop/ doctor’s office.  The building was done by a Dick Mayhew.  He does buildings  and terrain pieces. Ed said Dick’s prices are not that expensive. The building is light weight. Looki

At my most recent visit to a flea market, I picked up these three astronauts.  They are 45mm. My questions are there more poses and who made them.

Here is for me is one of the best Beton figures. It is cowboy bandit. I like the twist of the body and the way his mask is. I am keeping a lookout for this pose in black as I will use as The Shadow. The face mask is similar to  how the Shadow is depicted.

Finally we have an early English plastic figure. It is from Taylor and Barret. The figure is of an English  gentleman with a cane. The mold could have been one of their hollowcast models that survuved the war. we will wait to hear more about it from our English readers.

Does Dick Mayhew have a web site?

    • ed borris says:

No, he does not at least not yet. He does a lot of different buildings though and terrain scenes. They are not all western, he seems to do most anything. He brought over a few buildings and many terrain pieces and a picture album shwoing his work. He will be at OTSN if that helps.

      • Bobby G. Moore says:

Does he make a WW2 European Church? Do you think he could make some Bocage/Hedgerow terrain pieces? Can you give some ideal of his prices?
        Thanks

If he doesn’t make one, I’m sure he could. I know he made a church, a school house, a cantina ,a saloon, a log cabin and some buildings that would be appropriate for Foreign Legion scenes. He doesn’t have a price list and he seems flexible on the prices. He says he doesn’t do it so much for the money, but he enjoys making them. I paid $75.00 for the building above, but that could have been because I agreed to let him display some of his buildings in my room at OTSN. He said he’s not really computer literate, so it’s best probably to just give him a call or to check out his stuff at OTSN if you can make it. I’m just trying to get his name out there as a favor. He did give me a couple of terrain pieces, I’ll try to get pictures to anyone who wants them, I’m sure Paul will give you my e-mail address.

If he offered his buildings on-line he would be a very busy guy. Great attention to detail, just wondering which scale he generally works in?

Nice,,,a little more vertical photo and I can copy it,,size it and print it our for a false front on my shelf LOL

  4. TDBarnecut says:

The advertisement says ‘exciting play for years and years’. Little did they know.

  5. Daniel Murphy says:

I loved the ad. For the fun of it, I went to the inflation calculator and $1 in 1960 (my very rough date for the ad) is worth about $8.26 today. That would make the astronauts and some of the other figures the equivalent of about a dollar today (of course not factoring in s&h). Maybe this sheds some useful light on the difference between having mass-produced premium figures – i.e. the astronauts with their bubble helmets – and today’s short-run collector lines from Russia and elsewhere. Maybe not!
If you just want decent armymen to play with, it makes some of the better bucket soldiers look like a bargain. Sadly, Walmart seems to be closing out the Lanard Corps Elites buckets after a couple years on the shelves. I was able to grab some at $5 a bucket – about a nickel per 50mm man if you ignore all the other stuff.
